Dear Classmates,

After considering all the feedback, I am pleased to announce that the date for our 30 Year Class Reunion has been set.

On Friday, September 11th, we will have a casual tailgate at the East Gaston home football game against East Lincoln, and Saturday evening, September 12th, we will have our main event at a venue to be determined soon.

In light of this difficult economic environment, we will strive to keep the cost low. However, we also recognize that people want an entertaining event. It is a delicate balance.

In order to bridge the divide between quality and cost, we will discuss the options of sponsorships and donations at our next planning meeting in April.

In the mean time, if you have an interest in helping underwrite the cost of the event, or if you know of a company that might be interested in sponsoring the event, please step forward. Our Class Treasurer, Mary Lynne Cloninger, will collect and deposit all donations and sponsorships into our Class account. Checks should be made payable to EGHS Class of ‘79 and sent to:

Mary Lynne Cloninger
123 Dugar Ct
Gastonia, NC 28056

On another note, we are so fortunate to have the Class Website available to us through the tireless effort and expertise of Russell Randolph. In spite of the fact that he indiscriminately posts any and all pictures he can find of you, no matter how unflattering, please take the opportunity to thank him.

More reunion details will be coming soon, but for now, just “Save the Date”.

Sincerely,

R. Alan Lewis
Senior Class President

It's really great trying to keep cost down and I commend you for that. However, I will not attend the friday night events.

As a firefighter for 30 yrs, I will be attending the 9-11 service in Stanley to remember the 343 brother firefighters who gave their lives on that day 8 yrs ago when the US came under fire by terrorist.
Hope to see you Saturday.

Dear Laura,

I was so saddened to read your post about your son, Jacob. I cannot even begin to comprehend the loss you must feel.

It speaks volumes about your character that you would use this very personal tragedy for a higher purpose, and it certainly honors Jacob's life in the process.

On behalf of our Class, I would like to express our most heartfelt sympathy.

Just wanted to drop a line and tell everyone that I had a great time at Flip FLops. It is nice to see how well everyone is doing and that time really hasn't changed us all that much. I hope we do it again and hopefully more people will participate. Thanks! Can't wait for the reunion!

Just wanted to comment on the get together at FlipFlops grille. It sure was great to see some of the old classmates. It was a good time to sit around and reminisce of the times we had in school as well as find out how everyone has done over the years. It was surprising as to the amount of classmates that own their own businesses and they are doing quite well. My hat's off to them. I sure hope more will show up at the actual class reunion on September 11th and 12th - it will be a pleasure to see more fellow classmates there. Come on out and join in the fun, get a night out away from the kids and grandkids to those that have them...look forward to seeing everybody again soon!

I just wanted to comment on Flip Flops. My husband and I had a wonderful time and hope that everyone can get together again in the future. It was great to see everyone. Maybe next time we can have even more people to show up.If you weren't there you don't know what you missed!

Just want to let everyone know we really enjoyed getting together at Flip Flops! It was really interesting to see what everyone has been up to. Also it is always fun to reminisce. Thanks to everyone who showed up. It was great to see you!

I wanted to say what a great time I had at Flip Flops the other week. Although I am a year behind the class of 79, I still enjoyed seeing everyone. It was good to hear that Tracy Black's laugh was as infectious as ever......

Click on "Reunion Photos" to see pics that were taken at the gathering at Flip Flops on April 19th, the EG Booster Club golf tournament (a team from our class tied for first place!) and the 2nd reunion planning meeting on April 20th. The turn-out for all of these was very good. So good to see so many of you! Stay tuned for an update on class reunion plans.

OK, everyone.

Here is the reunion status.

Richard Wooten is checking on the availability and cost of having our Friday night (9/11/09) tailgate basically catered by Coach Scruggs behind the end zone near the field house. This is designed to be a low cost event, with food provided, that will also include the price of admission to the game in an area reserved for us.

Unfortunately, we heard at the planning meeting that there could be a conflict with some of our classmates who have given themselves in service to fire fighting. Services honoring those who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks are being sponsored by our local fire fighting teams that afternoon. We are hoping, however, that they will be able to join us after their services are concluded, and I would propose that we make an effort to honor our own who have given themselves to this cause.

As for the main event on Saturday night, we are checking on the pricing for various venues. Many of the people represented at the planning meeting wanted to have the Saturday night event at a hotel so that people could have the option of staying over, as we have done in the past.

There is also a contingent of people who would like to have Steve Perkins' and James Bramlett's band play for us. In order to make this possible, we are going to need donations over and above the cost of the event. I have commitments for $200 already. We need another $600 at least. So if you are interested in donating $50 to $100, or more, to enable us to hire the band, please let me or Mary Lynne know. This price represents a significant discount from what it would normally cost, and I have heard from several people that the band is really good. Otherwise, we will have a DJ set up by Russell and Scott, and that will be fine as well.

As soon as we get more information put together, we will let you know.

I had a great time seeing everyone at Flip Flops a couple Sunday's ago! It was nice to be able to talk to some folks that I haven't seen in years; Shawn, Ricky Lowe, Robin, Preston, Jeff Shirley and his wife, Richard Wooten, Vicki, etc., etc., and of course Russell and Thermos Johns. Not trying to wish time away, but I can't wait for the reunion. I haven't missed one yet and I expect this one will be better than any so far. The football tailgate should especially be a great time! See y'all there!

I want to let everyone know I enjoyed our reunion planning meeting at City Cafe and I am so excited that Sept 11th cannot get here fast enough! I am so glad I got to see a lot of you that I have not seen in years. Next time I encourge everyone to try to come to one of our meetings - they are a lot of fun!

I, too, had a great time at Flip-Flop's. It was great to see everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. Talked to Scruggs about the tailgate on 9-11, and everything is a go. I'll get more details back to Alan and let him post them. Hope to see everyone there!

GET WELL SOON LINDA CLIPPARD!!!!!!

Linda Clippard (Walker)

thanks so much Mike! I got your message!
Hey there everyone! Thanks so much for the get well wishes that have been sent to me by e-mail, cards, calls and visits. I especially am grateful for your concern and your prayers. I think I had all of the protestant denominations, catholics and jewish friends praying for me! And I received notes from all over the world (thanks, Alan, for contacting me from Spain and France!)
It is amazing what prayer and our God can do. He pulled me out of a very grim situation and I'm getting stronger everyday. I hope to be able to make it to the reunion with bells on and tell everyone in person how very much you mean to me. I love you all. Linda

Top 10 Reasons to Attend the Reunion

1. To hear Tracy Black's laugh again.
2. If you don’t show up, we will assume you still have a perm. Or that you have teeth like "Therm."
3. Because you wish you knew back then what you know now.
4. It’s a great excuse to go shopping for a new outfit.
5. C’mon, what’s an extra 30 pounds among old friends?
6. To show off pictures of your kids/step-kids/grandkids/dogs/pets
7. To make up for all of your unexcused absences
8. To show off your hot spouse/partner
9. You want to – you know you want to!
10. Because there are people who still care about you from
back in the day!

I hope that we have a really big turnout for our reunion. 30 years is a long time. Some days I feel ancient and then others I feel like I should still be in high school or somewhere close to there. Let's all go and get to know each other again. I have seen some friends recently that I haven't seen in ages and it is just so great to get to talk and reminisce.

Top 5 (Unfounded) reason's given for not attending your high school reunion...

5. “I’m not sure my schedule/commitments/job/family/[you-name-it] will allow me to come.”

Unless you’re absolutely positive that there is no way you will be able to come, register: Once you make the commitment to come, it’s amazing how the rest of your life can be arranged to make it possible.

4. "I don't want to come without my spouse/significant other, and I don't think they'll have any fun."

If our past experience is any guide, this is a non-issue. Most spouses and significant others are quickly embraced as family and have a great time. Some even say they’d rather come back to another one of our reunions instead of going to their own. (my wife's words exactly)

3. “I know what high school reunions are like. It’s just a bunch of boring people standing around bragging about their jobs, their marriages, their kids, etc., etc."

Yes, that’s the stereotype of what many high school reunions are like. Ours aren’t like that. It doesn’t take too long to realize the special bond we all have. It’s like getting in touch with your roots—or coming back home. There’s nothing else like it.

2. “I won’t know anyone there. Or they won’t remember me. Or they will remember me for the wrong reasons.”

It doesn't matter. We'll treat you like one of the family anyway. Many newcomers and old timers who have been to several reunions have made more "NEW" friends with classmates they didn't know very well before.

1. “I’ve gained weight, I’m not successful enough, I’ve been divorced, etc., etc., and I’m concerned about what people will think of me.”

No matter how real or how strong these feelings may be before you arrive, you’ll soon find out that none of this stuff really matters. The plain truth is: We want to see you!

OMG !!! I found out today I've got the stupid Swine Flu ! I won't be able to make it to the reunion. WHAAAA! It's not fair. Anyway, I hope everyone has a great time and think about me at least one time. EG class of '79 is, and always will be the greatest class ever. Love to you all, Jan Abernathy Wilcox.

Russ, just a note of thanks for inviting my class ('80) to the reunion. The tireless and extensive work you've done on this website as well as the reunion is greatly appreciated by all. I look forward to seeing you after 30 years. OMG... 30 years.... where did the years go???

Friday night was awesome, for the ones that left early the Warriors came back from a 27-0 deficit to win 28-27. The food was great and it was great to see all my class mates that made it to the game. I just want to thank everyone that help put this together.

I'd like to take a moment to thank the Class of 79 for inviting the Class of 80 to your Tailgate Party last night. It was great to see all of you guys and the game turned out to be more than we could ask for (thanks to Jeff Wilson's halftime pep talk for firing up the Warriors and sending them to victory). Also a thanks to Scruggs. The food was great. I hope you guys are having a great time tonight. I'm sure everyone appreciates the hard work that Russ, Scott, Alan, Vicki, Mary Lynne and many others did in preparation for this weekend. Feel free to help us (Class of 80) when we start our plans in the next few months. You guys were truly a great class.....
