His children remember him as a kind father who instilled the importance of lifelong learning, loved telling stories, and appreciated a good joke.

Growing up, he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts, earning the highest rank in scouting, Eagle Scout, in 1958. Along with being an Eagle Scout, he was also a Warrior in the tribe of Mic-O-Say. Fred always had a love for music, was passionate about his family, and serving others. He also was very dedicated to his faith. Over the years he was a member of Antioch Community Church, First Christian Church of North Kansas City, and Barry Christian Church, often volunteering his time on various committees and serving as an elder.

He is preceded in death by his parents Fred and Lily Mason, brother James Barnett, and sister Jane Cooper.
