I don't remember much about some high school classes, but I was always listening in Dick Dunlap's class! He made the subject interesting and alive. No wonder I majored in history in college and taught social studies, along with English and English Second Language.

Mr. Dunlap would get that wood leg of his swinging sometimes and just delight the heck out of us! He didn't tell us (at least not me) how he lost his leg, but it was during The Republican Depression and he'd hop the rails going from B. C., Canada to Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. He slipped and the leg went under the wheels of the train!

Mr. Dunlap died as a result of Alzeheimer's, but put up a good fight. For years I got to attend church with Mr. Dunlap and his wife, Cleo, on Samish Island, WA beginning in 1995 when we moved there. As his illness progressed, one of the things he could keep in his mind was his time at NKCHS and just seeing my face on Sunday morning would trigger that memory in him. Everytime I'd meet him he'd express a longing to return to those days. As his students, we must have made him very happy!

Dick Dunlap is on my favorite NKCHS teachers' list along with Grace Shields, Tom Moore, and Charles Cottingham.  He had a way of engaging you in the subject matter using humor and trivia.  I found American history fascinating and have maintained a life-long love of the subject.  I think he left his students with the impression of a most effective teacher and a really good guy.  To future teachers, he would have been a good role model.

Claudia, he did spend a brief time (not sure if in class or after class) explaining how he lost his leg.  I also recall being impressed that he owned part of an island and he often expressed his love of the Pacific Northwest.
