Mrs. Shields was a demanding and inspiring teacher.  She also pounded a definition into my head that served me well in my first college course in English lit, a class with about 85 students in it , freshman as well as upper classmen.  The professor, a very decorous and scholarly man, asked if anyone knew what an elegy was.  Well, Gracie (as some of us called her behind her back), had told us that there was one definition we would remember from her class or else. . .so, I jumped right up from my desk and shouted, "A long narrative poem celebrating in elevated style the deeds of one or more heroes!"  Professor Gimmestad, slight of stature and modest in tone, almost fell backwards at my exuberance but quickly recovered saying, "Yes, yes quite so young man.  What is your name?"  I got an "A" on my first exam and never really had to break a sweat the rest of the way:  way to go Gracie!

I have always been very well organized, a trait that has served me well both in professional and personal life. I attribute that quality to Grace Shields.  Oh, how I used to hate to redo and redo an outline!  But it was that very lesson that comes back to serve me whenever I have to organize thoughts, committees, events, or even an interior design. Thank you Grace Shields for forcing me to learn that lesson!  I think of you often!

The reality that I am literate at all is a tribute to my most inflencial teacher, Grace Shields.  I loved her then and I love her now.  I have loved literature and writing my entire life because she imparted that to me.  A week never passes that I don't remember her.  Mrs. Shield was one of the most important people in my life and I will never forget her and always be forever grateful to her.

Grace Shields awakened my interest in literature and inspired a life long reading habit.  I remember that she wanted you to actually learn the concepts and meaning behind the words.  My last visit with her was during the spring of my freshman year at K-State.  I was having trouble getting anything but a C on papers and brought some for her to critique.  She helped me see that it wasn't my writing but a personality conflict with the instructor.  Made me feel better about my writing but still hated the instructor!
