Gary, just a slight literary comment: No one can control the past -- the past is gone.
You always make thought provoking comments. I like to keep things simple; when our country was founded, it was after much discussion, writing, thought, and arguments, which ensured the end result being our Constitution. It is perhaps the most complete guide for a Democratic Republic to succeed and prosper, yet giving the citizens as much freedom as possible. The changes from the past you allude to have been eroding the fundamental tenants of what our founding Father's envisioned. It is true times change, some things have been tweaked to incorporate these changes, but the basics remain undeniable. We have unalienable rights, this means granted to us by God. These things are virtually written in stone, and must be guarded. When people espouse the idea of having a changing Constitution to keep up with the times, what is happening is a very sinister move or moves to undermine our great country. We have too many years of success to think these changes will substantially improve our system of governance. Having lived in many socialist countries, I can assure you we DO NOT, want this for our country.
I personally, think a couple of areas need amended; such as, term limits for our Congress, and Supreme Court. The corruption in politics is and has been harming our country. The original intent was for our representatives (the House and Senate) would be to serve a time, then return to their homes as private citizens. I do not believe it was ever intended these people should remain in office for decades, making service a career. By doing so, these men/women have left themselves open to taking bribes from special interest groups; including foreign countries. All one has to do is look at what the level of wealth was when these people took office to what they are worth when leaving office -- where has all that money come from? Their salaries certainly don't account for it! One does not have to be a rocket scientist to see something seriously wrong. The personal wealth of even the former President certainly should raise some eyebrows. If criminal activity is uncovered on any of these people there should be prosecutions, people should go to jail. We need to eliminate this, by limiting the time they spend in office. I would think for the normal two year term for Representatives, they could not serve more than three two year terms (six years). For the Senate, the high house, of six year terms, the limit may be no more than two terms (12 years). For the Supreme court, life appointments does not allow for old political cronies to be replaced with fresh honest to goodness Jurists. I would suggest Supreme Court Judges should be limited to 20 years, or age 70, whichever comes first. I realize there is value to some institutional memory, but there is a limit to how much time would be required to be up-to-speed on what is going on in the country and world.
What we are seeing today, is extremely worrisome, with the march toward Socialism/Marxism, which is in high gear. We cannot repeat cannot allow these people to ‘fundamentally change’ our country. Something Joe Biden has said, as did Barack Hussein Obama saying when he took office. The fundamental damage being done, is so serious, we’re almost to the point of being irreversible.
We say this every election “the most important election in our lifetime”, I’ve said this for many years, but I never believed we would be in such a damaged state to fear our Republic could literally fail in our lifetime. We are teetering on the precipice right now. President Trump may have his faults, which he surely does, but who doesn’t, except for Jesus Christ himself? I am firmly convinced if we do not re-elect Trump and take control of both houses of Congress, we could see the end of our beloved country as we have always known. Perfect no, but we must continue the efforts to preserve the fundamental tenants our Fore-Father’s envisioned for us, to live free.
I could go on about examples of the encroachment we already accept as ‘just the way it is’; such as, home owner associations, as one example, but there are many encroachments which have been eroding our freedoms very slowly for the past 50-plus years.
Now, Gary and friends, you mention being wordy – how does this measure up?
P.S. The organization – Conventions of States, is a group trying to do something about this – we need all the help we can get.
