Robin Scott

My Grandfather Scott, Dad's Dad, was a pitcher for the baseball team, the Chicago White Socks from 1906 until 1917. My Grandmother, of Irish descent, sang in vaudeville with her 3 sisters, The Cook Sister's, in Chicago and there grandma and grandpa met and married. My grandpa's best friend was Buck Weaver, a well known member of the Chicago Black Sox (I know the truth about my Uncle Buck for you baseball enthusiast's), married my grandma's sister, my great aunt, Marie. Buck and Marie had no children but they always lived with grandma, grandpa and my Dad. My grandfather was born in Deadwood and I believe Calamity Jane and a few other colorful characters lived there while grandpa was a child. On my mother's side my Grandpa worked for MGM Studios as a prop man working on the films for 30 years, I'm so proud of him as well. His mother wrote a diary of her travels in a covered wagon with her family from El Monte, Ca to Tuscon Ariz to find work. Great grandma married in Tuscon and asked her husband to bring her back to California where my grandpa was born. I have a copy of the diary, somewhere, but it is on display at the Museum of Congressional Records.
Thanks to you all for the steps to trace our family trees and blood-lines, I want to know more than what I have already been told!! How fun is this!!

And Marianna, I understand that you understand :-)

Phyllis...I think Tennessee is a great name for a girl! I had wanted to name my daughter, Amanda, that but was vetoed. My Tennessee married a Bennett...hummm...very close to Burnett. Who else have unusual family names? I know this is mean...bless her heart. My Mom's middle name was Matilda...I would call her 'Matilda the Hun'. I sure am glad she never heard that one.

Don, thank you for posting the link to the 20 the class reunion. It was great looking at the pictures. I wish some of those that went to the 20th could have come to the 40th.

Robin...loved your family stories. They are something to be cherished. Wouldn't our history teachers be proud of us now???

Lynne Scales (Thurman)

When my brother arrives up here from CA in a few weeks, I will share with you all of the great stories he found out with our family research.

As far as the unusual names, I think my grandsons are pretty unusual, they are Burke and Bridger.

Robin,
Wow what a history - that is such a great story. I really enjoyed it.

Marianna,
I really enjoyed your story too. In my family I had a few of those interesting characters, you know what I mean???????

I really do think that our history teachers would be really proud of what had been found through the new research that is now available or was back then we just didn't know how it find some of it.

Thank goodness for technology.

Okay here are my parents' names Eldo Henry & Goldie Jean. Sad but true. My gg-grandmother's name was Jerusha. That is an odd one. I found a couple others with that name around that time though. This got me curious, I just looked it up, it is a Biblical name from the Old Testament. I've have a distant grandfather named Zebulon Collings. It's funny how the names evolve also. We have Yates. Some of the family spell it Yates & some Yeatts. The Collings became Collins for some of the family. I found where there were Yates/Yeatts brothers, each having the last name spelled differently.

Very interesting stuff.

I found this by looking up the rosters for the White Sox during that time.

Phyllis Willhite

My grandmother's name was Ollie Clementine Gray. She married John Ogden. An early spelling of Ogden was Oakden. Yes, names can really evolve into something quite different. The Broyles I mentioned earlier is also Bryles or Briles. My Willhite could also be Willheit, Willhoit or even Willett and any one can also be found with a single L. That makes it tough sometimes in doing the search.

How about Von Frutenburg to Williams. :) My great grandfather came here from Germany and changed his name to Williams. How he came up with that I will never know.

There otta be a law about changing names. It makes it even harder to find relations. But at least you know Von Frutenburg. There shouldn't be too many of those.

Thanks Don...Yep, that's my gramppa. I was really young when grandpa lived with us but his shoulder hurt him so bad that he moved out to the desert, close to Palm Springs, all by himself. He passed away out there and I always thought that was so sad. I've got pictures; Shoeless Joe Jackson, Babe Ruth, memorabilia. I thank God when I was burglarized I did not have anything on the walls yet. I swear there was an angel in my house the day that happened!!

Just be grateful everyday, yes, do what you do best and be happy for all that you have to be grateful for.

Lynne Scales (Thurman)

Yes Robin, I will continue to do what I do best, which is being happy with the wonderful family that I have, that's not a hard thing for me to do at all. I will forever be greatful each and everyday for my family and all of the love and joy that they have brought to my life. Starting with my parents, husband, children, grandchildren and now the many wonderful freinds that I have re-connected with from PHS, as well as met here in Idaho.

It really doesn't matter if I understand, just as long as I know in my heart that even though the time is short with my Mom, I can still find something each and everyday to be greatful for. Greatful for the time I have to spend with her at this new facility, greatful that I have the chance to look into her eyes and still tell her how much I love her and what a Wonderful Mother she has been to me.

Maybe it takes someone with a kind and loving heart to understand what someone is going thru as they watch their loved ones pass away a little more each and every day.

I will continue to say to all of you, as I have learned this past year, to always be greatful for something in your day. It helps make for a healthy life.

Sandra Harris (Lint)

Well classmates, my Mom's family has some different names. Maybelle, Twyla Arletta, Hilma Olive, Hilda Jeanne,(Mom) Wanda Jane, Wilda June, and Evalee Etta. I left out he ones that aren't strange, a total of ten kids. My Dad's side..He was an only child, Irone Odell Harris, His dad..Iron Eugene Harris, his Mom..Bonnie Bell..his grandma..Lennie Mae Patterson Harris. My Mom's Mom got the names from the newspaper, apparently she didn't read the Lifestyle section.

I'm not understanding alot these days but I think I'm confused.

Marianna Brown (Schechter)

It sure makes genealogy hard when the last name goes through changes. My paternal grandmother was a Grames, aka Grimes, aka Grimm, aka Grahm, aka Graham. My maternal grandmother was from Denmark with the last name of Vad...not a Danish name. My ex husband had some strange first names in his family. His mother..Ivaloo, an uncle Acel...uncle Odie. Oh what we can do to our children with the names we give them. Like my name. I was named for my mom, Mary and her aunt Anna. When my dad filled out my birth certificate he messed it up...hence MaryAnn. It was so nice to have it legally changed to what it was suppose to have been.

Sandi,

You didn't name your kids after any of your relatives?

Lorene BuSteed (Householder)

Lynne, I can truly relate to what you are going through in your life at this moment. If I only had one more time to tell my dad that I loved him, even though I continued to tell him almost on a daily basis, it is just that I did not realize that his time was that short. We often see our parents not knowing that we may or may not have the chance to say I love you again. The pain hurts, but the memories live on a life time. But if I could just tell my dad one more time "Daddy I love you". We always had this thing, I would call them and say to my mom, I love you guys, but dad would say from the background what about me, and I would say, mom tell him I said I love both of you, then he would holler out from a distance, "I love you, he would then say, and I said it first". There will always be those moments in our lives that we won't forget.

So whether it be a parent, a child, a special friend, don't forget to let them know that you love them, for it may be the last time that you get to say those truly amazing words.

Hang in there Lynne and may God Bless you every day and give you strength and courage to endure what you and your family will be facing soon.

Love,

Lorene

Molly Lowe (Davis)

Well, gosh, now you all have me getting the geneology bug.

Names: my Dad was Garnie (no one seems to know where that came from), my Mom was El Jean Lula (evidently Les Miserables was THE book at the time my Grandma was pregnant and the main character was Jean Val Jean so my Grandma did a twist on that). My Grandma was Madge (real name not a nickname like Madonna is using these days)

Most of my Dad's family of 12 (2 sets of twins) had country names: Daisy Mae, Jesse Rose, Lillian, Lon, Wanda Vivian, Pearl, etc. I was named after my Dad's favorite sister who died in childbirth at 21.

My Dad's Dad was Henry Clay Lowe so someone loved that stateman, I'm guessing.

Lynne: your Mom's facility is lovely. Can only imagine how difficult this is for you seeing her deteriorate a bit more each day.

My daughter has been the victim of identity theft and is being bombarded almost daily for the last 2 weeks with money being stolen from her accounts, calls from the bank, opening up new accounts only to have those compromised within days. Because I have her on my checking account, my account was blocked too. Oi! It's always something.

Love this Forum!

Molly

PS: Billy Baggett's Mom had a lulu of a name: Chestnut Roe-theta. The things we do to our kids!

Talking about the things we do our children. We had a girl in junior high whose name was Fern Underwood. I bet her parents thought that was a very pretty name. My husband went to school with an Ima Bean. They called her Ima Lima Bean. The best one I heard was from a guy I worked with. He went to school with a Hyman Sieman.

I thought I would share this with all of you, since we are talking family lines.

Ever hear of the Russell Stover candy, yep that was my great grandfathers family on my mom's side. His name was Robert Stover.

Ever hear of Roy Acuff? King of Country Music! He was on my dad's side of the family, his grandfathers side.

Roy Claxton Acuff (September 15, 1903 – November 23, 1992) was an American country music singer, fiddler, and promoter. Known as the "King of Country Music," Acuff is often credited with moving the genre from its early string band and "hoedown" format to the star singer-based format that helped make it internationally successful. Acuff began his music career in the 1930s, and gained regional fame as the singer and fiddler for his group, the Smoky Mountain Boys. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1938, and although his popularity as a musician waned in the late 1940s, he remained one of the Opry's key figures and promoters for nearly four decades. In 1942, Acuff co-founded the first major Nashville-based country music publishing company— Acuff-Rose Music— which signed acts such as Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and The Everly Brothers. In 1962, Acuff became the first living person to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.[1]

Ok Pat,
I think you win the names this week, those were some real winners. I always felt bad that my mom's real name was Nellie Grace Geraldine Fitzgerald, if you ever wanted to piss her off all you had to do was call her Nellie.

However, I think your Jr High school buddies names were the winners so far.

Have a great day.
Lynne

Pat, I didn't name my kids after any of my Mom's family. They are named after Don and I. Christopher James, (Donald James) And Elizabeth Rae ( Sandra Rae). I wanted to give them traditional names and long ones since they had a short last name. So what do we call them? Chris and Beth! Beth named Zoey Rae after us and I have a cousin Linda Rae, and Beth's best friend is Heather Rae. We are just rays of sunshine!! Oh, my Dad went to school with a girl named Rose Budd.

Sandy, I have a Beth too, but it is Bethany. There aren't too many Bethanys around, and it makes her mad when she hears of one. She wants to be the only one with that name. My son, Sam, was named after my Uncle Sam who was the bestest uncle in the whole entire world. Even though he was my uncle, my husband actually picked the name because he agreed that he was the bestest uncle in the whole entire world. But I really like the name now. There aren't a lot of them around, and it is made up.
