Darla Ford

O.K. talking about names what about mine there was no one is school with the of Darla except me. and of course all of you think that my mom named me after Darla Hood of the little rascals, no she didn't she names me after Darla Darrett who was a country western singer she sang with the troubadours, My dad agreed to the name of Darla but not Darla Darrett Ford so I have the name of Darla Diane Ford. and all of three of us kids have the same intials. DDF.Dennis Dee Ford, and Dwight Dean Ford. Pat I know how you daughter feels about her name I like my name and now I here it on TV and the radio and it's just a little strange. just thought I would share with all of you. and as for names on the parents side my Dad had a Uncle named Rolla Ray, twins name Bert and Gert and a aunt name Malta. and my Moms dad's name Gomar not Gomer.
my Mom just told me that little bit of news while I was working on that side of the family because I have always thought it was Gomer.

Hope to see all in Vegas
Take Care
Darla

It is a shame we wait until our loved ones are gone to realize what questions we should have asked. I knew my great great grandmother. The conversations we did have were so colorful and wonderful but I didn't know when she was alive what I wanted to know. I wish I could have her back for a while to pick her brain. If I can figure out a way I will try to post the newspaper article somewhere. It is very interesting.

My great aunt was full of information too but like I said in an earlier post she left all of our family mementos to charity.

Speaking of names Sandi, we did the same thing, my son is Eric Michael, my daughter is Brandie Lynn, Steve is Steven Michael and my name is Patricia Lynn. My granddaughter has a pretty name. She says she's named after a rock. Her name is Amethyst Nicole. We call her Amy.

After talking with Lorene last night, sharing some of our family history it came to my mind that my mom went to school with Norma Jean Baker, aka: Marilyn Monroe, they were friends and shared a pink angora sweater.
While I am going thru my mom's things I hope to find the year book from their school, she knows she has it. We found the 1942 Clearwater HS album, so maybe with some luck we will find it.

My brother called last night, he told me the name Scales came from the countrymen that scaled the walls.

Odd family names: Phoebee, Ora, Clyde that's all I can think of right now.

Like I said when my brother gets up here, I will be able to catch up with some of you.

Take care,
Lynne

I was really lucky on my dad's side of the family. My grandmother wrote out her life history. She also gave me names, birthdates and death dates for all of her children, her parents and aunts and uncles. She did this on hers and my grandfather's family. She also gave places where they were born. I have since found the majority of these families and now keep in touch with some of them. We had a family reunion with my two living aunts (out of 9 children) and almost all of my cousins in Iowa (I have 30 1st cousins) a couple of years ago. I invited our extended cousins, about 12 showed up. It was wonderful getting to meet them.

I have a funny story, I found one of my grandmother's cousins & called her on the phone. I asked if she would fill out a questionnaire on her family if I sent it to her. She said she would, but I never got it back. A couple of years after I went to my great aunt's 90th birthday party. This cousin was introduced to me. I reminded her about our phone conversation and that I never received the questionnaire back. She was pretty embarrassed and admitted she hadn't planned on sending it back. Her husband promised that she would fill it out and return it to me. I told her I now knew what she looked like and where she lived; and I would come to her house to get it personally if she didn't return it by mail. I got it a couple of weeks later.

Speaking of names, my mother had two sisters named Mamie Ruth ad Lula Elizabeth. Mom was Laura Jane. But oddest of all is my dads sister, Chester. Who would name their daughter Chester. And my grandmother on my dad's side, Sweet Amanda Lackey. I never never knew her. She passed on before I was born.

Don Deyne

My name story is about my middle name.

Donald Roy Deyne.

In memory the story goes..........

One day approaching a birthday nearing the age a grandmother might send her young grandson a check as a gift, I get a letter addressed to:

Master Donald Leeroy Deyne (not positivve on the spelling of Leroy/Leeroy)

The check was made out the same. Guess we took it to where my paents banked and they cashed it.

Seems my dad's best friend before he went in the Navy was named Leeroy and they extracted the Roy and left it at that.

I don't think I ever got anything from my grandmother that didn't say Donald Leeroy Deyne on it. Even tho they told her repeatedly it was Roy.

And that's all I got ta say about that.

Dear PHS Classmates:
As we all start to face the age of 60, some sooner than others I know. I just felt a need to share some very valuable information with you.

I've recently found out that to purchase long term health care insurance you need to do it prior to the age of 60. Phyllis, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, and maybe Phyllis you can even help some of us out.

I am meeting with an insurance agent tomorrow at 1:00 to purchase a policy for my husband and myself. I met a lady at the facility I take my mom to, this facility is private pay only and right now it's $4,700.00 a month. I know it's more expensive in CA.
However, if I purchase a policy for $135 a month within 3 years it comes to where it pays 100% of the pay for this facility. Oh how I wish my dad would have had this, but thank the good Lord they are able to manage.

I just felt that it might be worth sharing with some of you. I know times are tough and no one wants another bill to have to handle each month, but after this past six months my eyes have really been opened and I have learned so much, and thought I'd share with anyone you might care.

Lynne

If you can get a policy to do that you need to jump on it, and let me know. My father in-law has been paying over $100 month for over 10 years and it will only pay a small fraction of his monthly stay. Maybe the key here is if you buy before 60.

Carol Maddex (Switzer)

Lynn you need to go for it. My husband and I have long term insurance we purchased a long time ago which includes the cost of living increase over the years. When you buy young the cost is very reasonable and has remained the same cost over the years as well. Is that cost for just your husband or for both of you. My insurance is around $900 a year and the cost has not changed and my husband is around $1400 a year and has not changed. Unfortunately most don't even think of this till something happens to one of the spouses or in this case parents. By the way this is also a tax right off.

Carol

Phyllis Willhite

Lynne, you are absolutely right. It's best to get long term care polices between age 55 and 60. After that age it can be very expensive. And you need to get a policy like the one Carol mentioned that will give you increased coveage as the cost of care increases. We had purchased a policy for my husband a few years ago. I don't have mine yet, but I need to think about it really soon too.

Ok here is where my name came from. My grandmother (mother's side) her names was Coral Ada and my other grandmother's name was Selma Christine. I am very thankful over the years my mother switched the O and the A in Coral for the names of Carol and they gave me the middle name of my other grandmother of Christine. My grandfathers name was Homer and my dad's father was Marvin. I have a cousin who was named after Grandma Selma, Selma Elaine but when she was older she had it changed to Vicki Jo. As far as my family my sisters and brother have tried their darnest to name each of my nieces and nephews very different names and least in today's world. Our generation was pretty common in comparison

Carol, That is funny that your cousin's name was Selma Elaine. My mother's name was Thelma Elaine.

Peggy Steiner (Miller)

Robin,
Good to see you back on the forum. Got your message :)
My grandparents names and greatgrandparents names were very common - Frank's, Elizabeth's, Dinah's & William's and my family on my Mom's side came from England & also I understand some were in Canada - my cousin's have really done a great job on the ancestry.com site. On my Dad's side we are from Switzerland and the same on his side common names. Daniel's, Marguerite, Ernest, Walter's so nothing really out of the norm.
Hope you are ok.
Talk to you soon
Peggy

Hey Classmates,
I know this isn't going back in time as far as some of you have been doing in your family history. However, have any of you gone back to page 5 or so of our forum?
It's pretty uplifting and reminds you of the great time we all had at our 40th reunion. It made me smile and wish we could ALL be together again.
Do we really have to wait until a 45th reunion? How about a 42 1/2? LOL
Take a minute and go back and read some of our chatting, it's pretty funny. I know some of them were deleted but the good ones are still there.

Talk to you soon.
Love you, and I really mean that! (Molly :-)

Don Deyne

Seems everyone hoping to be in Vegas in June would agree with Lynne.

MAYBE we'll wind up having moderate reunions once a year, minis when it's convenient, and major ones on the 5 years.

MAYBE we'll have more go to homecoming in Nov.

03/30/09 04:59 PM #2012

Peggy Steiner (Miller)

Yes, Don it would be nice to see everyone get together at least once a year and then the big one every 5 years - we still hope that more of the classmates will make it to the June Vegas Party - right now we have confirmed 40 (that's including their guests). It was wonderful seeing so many of our classmates at the 40 yr. Hope that everyone will stay in touch with each other. Hope you and Genie are doing well.
Peggy

Carol Maddex (Switzer)

I went back and have been reading all the thank u's from the 40th reunion. How quickly we forget. It was such a Good Read....Thank you Lynne for the suggestion.

Don the Home Coming sounds good in November. I still think we should all get together sometime this summer for a Disneyland Day!

Having yearly get togethers is what we seem to be doing already and I hope it continues.

The next Big one will be for the 45th here in SO.Cal. Please email the suggestions to Pat Kuester, Pat Hamilton, Phyllis Willhite and myself. We are cetainly open for suggestions.

I had a Scentsy Party at my house just recently with Geneva Jacobs. It was a lot of fun. Good to see her again...

All have Great Monday!

I know some scools that have one fancy evening for the major reunion, and then on the other day they have a big famiy picnic with games, fun and prizes for all.

Why not ask Stephanie Dimagio and Betty Haskins how their So. CA. reunion turns out, I hear it's in a great location and close to a major airport and major freeway for all of us out of towners. I know I'll be there and the easier to navigate around once we land the better.

I do hope you all have a wonderful time at your mini reunion in June. Pack you suits, my kids just left the Golden Nugget and said the water slide was amazing.
They could barley keep their 4 and 5 years old out of it.
Love
Lynne
