Rejoice Dear Friends,

'Tis the season to enhance, reflect and More…savor life with the wonders and challenges of the past year. This bi-annual letter is filled with the richness of Béla the Wheaton who has brought me spunk, verve and exercise in the past five months.

As the great wheel of life continues its rhythmic turn, I have been more reflective and quiet in the past few years. Many friends and relatives have passed along and with them rich moments of fellowship, unconditional love and joy.

My work has been focused on a new book to be released by Penguin (Hudson Street) next September. Healing at the Speed of Sound will be a major update on the role of sound in our well being. I've worked closely with my colleague Alex Doman on this exciting project.

I've stayed closer to home than usual, but still adventured to China and Southeast Asia last spring with friends. I plan a trip to Egypt and Greece early in 2011.

May this season be wonderful for you and yours! Call forth all you thanksgivings, concerns and remembrances. Sing to those around your universe the best of "Glorias." Pray for those in suffering and for the many who protect us. After the gloss, glitter and rush of this season, may you feel the harmony of life through its beauty in sound, music and nature.

Much love,
Don

Comments:

I have been a professional musician, writer and teacher working for many years in Tokyo, Dallas and Boulder, Colorado. My book, The Mozart Effect is available in 27 languages. (mozarteffect.com) I am director of musical services for Anesthetic Audio Systems, a company that provides music for healthcare facilities. (aestheticas.net) I serve on the board of the American Music Research Center at the University of Colorado and am lecturer for the Philharmonic Orchestra. My first of 24 books is a biography of Nadia Boulanger, Master Teacher, my teacher in Paris. I have been very active in French music associations. There is a grand concert dedicated to her work at La Madeleine Church planned for April 5, 2009. (4 pm, no charge) see the web site: NadiaBoulanger.org

School Story:

My years in Fontainebleau and Paris have served as a dynamic foundation for my personal and professional life. I studied at the Conservatory in Fontainebleau during the summers of 1960 and 1961 with Nadia Boulanger and Robert Casadesus. While living in the dorm at PAHS, (1961-1962) I was able to go to Paris on Wednesdays to continue my studies in piano, solfége and harmony. I sang in the madrigals and often accompanied the PAHS choir under the strict discipline of Robert Oliveras.
I am still in close touch with friends from Fontainebleau who lived in the dorm. We have our own little alumni association that meets every few years. There are a dozen dorm stories I dare not put into print. Miss Messmore, the dorm mother, died in 2007. She taught music education at the University of North Texas for over twenty years after she left Paris.
