Doug Stell - Class Of 1967

Doug Stell

Douglas Richard Stell, 74, of Richmond, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on February 11, 2024.

He was born in Bethesda, Maryland in 1949 to Albert L. and Laura DeSelm Stell. Doug was loyal and dedicated. He gave 100% to everything he did, from work and military, to the young people he guided and most importantly, his family, his boys, and three grandchildren.

A VCU grad, Doug served his country as Port Security Chief Master for 35 years in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. He worked as a courier for Federal Express for 37 years. “Coach Dad,” “Mr. Doug,” and “The Voice” served his community by volunteering. He gave his time to Hanover High and Varina High School marching bands and winter guards, Ward Elementary, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America, YMCA Soccer, Special Olympics, Montrose church, and volunteered over 35 years with James River Aquatic Club and Sandston Stingrays.

Doug’s voice was familiar to so many through radio (WJRB, WGOE, WRNL, and WRIR), announcing swim meets and championships, countless speeches he gave at schools, for Eagle Scouts, Memorial Day, Wreaths Across America, and even from the pulpit when needed.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Judith Marshall Stell, his sons Bryan and Scott, daughter-in-law Kathleen, and grandchildren Cooper, Josephine, and Henry. He leaves behind his brothers Steve (Susan) and Jeff (Gail) and their families, and many cousins and friends.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday February 24 at 2pm with visitation at 1pm at Nelsen’s (4650 S Laburnum Ave.). Doug left his final wishes and asked that we celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, share love and kindness with others.
