EHS Faculty: Thomas George Thorum, Sr.

Thomas George Thorum, Sr., age 87, died January 12, 2025, surrounded with the love and presence of his family.  Born August 17, 1937 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Elmer and Oleah Thorum, he was the eldest brother to John and Paul.

A graduate of the University of Utah, Tom began a 33 year career teaching math and coaching swimmers at East High School and the Fort Douglas Country Club.  He touched the lives of countless students and swimmers; becoming a mentor, teacher, coach and inspiration to all of those that had the opportunity to meet him.  He was an admired and successful coach, leading his teams to numerous championships.  He was an athlete; a trophied handball player and an avid runner.

In retirement he traveled with his wife Jean Carol Wallace Hansen Thorum (1935-2013) and enjoyed the outdoors and his many grandchildren.

He is survived by eight children; Mark (Laurie) Thorum, Troy (Leidy) Thorum, Susan (Sean) Frank, Christopher (Ritsuko) Thorum, Tommy (Mellanie) Thorum, Debra (David) Ross, Kevin (Shannon) Hansen, thirteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.
