Joe Oien - Class Of 1956

May 19, 1927 - November 29, 2015

Joseph C. Oien passed away at his new home in Bellingham, WA at the age of 77.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph A. and Emily H. Oien and brother Harold Oien.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Sharon, of 56 years. Joe and Sharon were high school sweethearts growing up together in Montana.

Joe is lovingly remembered by his son Douglas Oien, daughter-in-law, Theresa, his daughter, Deanna Selsor, son-in-law, Paul, his granddaughters, Gretchen Hovde, Heidi Oien, Becky Oien and Sarah Selsor and his great-grandaughters, Quinn and Drew Hovde.

Joe served in the Army Signal Corps for 2 years, he worked at the Anacortes Texaco Refinery for 36 years where he worked his way up to head of the inspection department.

Joe also served on the WA State Boiler Board, the Texaco Credit Union Board, was VP and then President of the Anacortes Lutheran Church Council and served as a volunteer EMT for the Anacortes Ambulance for over 14 years. He was captain of the Anacortes Ambulance for it's final years before it was transitioned into the Anacortes Fire Department.

Joe's biggest accomplishment was successfully performing CPR on his beloved wife at a remote campground after a day of fishing. Joe received the Washington State Governor's Life Saving Award for his life saving efforts.

Joe was an avid prospector and rock hound, he loved fishing and he always had a smile on his face and a helping hand for those around him. He touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
