Nancy Garrett (Garrett)

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! Hope everyone has a wonderful time this week. We will be having our Thanksgiving on Sat. here in Ava. Tim's daughter, Sayde has to work Thanksgiving Day. So she and her son and boyfriend and his two boys and Tim's son, Kody and his wife and daughter will be here. I really miss the big family get togethers my family used to have when we all lived in Calif. It seems the only time we all get together anymore is for funerals.
Heard today that Glenna Perry passed away. Our love and sympathy go out to Ken and Bev and the rest of the family. It brings back a lot of memories of eating in her restaurant. I still put crushed saltine crackers on my salads like she did at her restaurant. She was a wonderful lady and great cook.
One thing that I am very thankful for this year is the fact that we could all get together this past summer and renew our friendships and become even better friends as adults without all the hang-ups we had in school. ( I know I did). I think we are an amazing class and haven't aged a bit! We are THE class of 69, afterall!!
God Bless you all this Thanksgiving!
Well I am alone tonite and feeling a little lonely, so think I'll pop me some popcorn and have a glass of wine!
I'm going to go back to work on the truck with Tim after the first of the year. So....I better enjoy my home time now!! Everyone, take care and God Bless each and everyone of you!

I also want to say Happy Thanksgiving to all our classmates. Enjoy the Holiday with loved ones, eat a lot, go back on the diet after the holiday(s), and be safe.

Tehachapi Depot: another lost jewel is returned to Downtown
By: Jon Eric Hammond

Downtown Tehachapi has been made whole again with the welcome return of the Tehachapi Depot, rising from the ashes of the old 1904 depot that burned on June 13, 2008.

The restored depot, whose exterior is virtually identical to the original, joins the elegant Art Deco-style BeeKay Theater, a nearby landmark that was also destroyed by fire and beautifully resurrected.

The depot project was undertaken and completed ahead of schedule by Aspen Builders, a well-regarded construction company based in Tehachapi whose headquarters happen to be located just down two blocks down Green Street from the depot itself.

The city officially accepted the restored depot from Aspen Builders on November 10 after a final walk-through inspection by city staff.

“It’s just beautiful,” remarked City Manager Greg Garrett. “I keep finding myself coming down here almost every day. I can’t keep away. We’re very pleased with the job that Aspen did and the professionalism shown during the entire project.”

I am personally delighted to see the return of our depot. The old building was such a familiar, integral part of Downtown and its absence during the past year was depressing.

I was in the old depot a number of times while growing up in Tehachapi, the first time in 1971 when I was in first grade and local school kids were given the chance to ride the train to Bakersfield when it became known that passenger service would be discontinued.

Later when I started working for the newspaper I would visit my friend Bill Stokoe at the depot when he was head of the signal maintenance department, for he was an unparalleled source of railroading information and would always try to make time for me and answer all my train questions cheerfully and thoroughly.

Touring the inside of the restored depot, I could clearly see some differences, but they are positive improvements such as a fire protection system, modern heating and air conditioning, insulation and better lighting.

The look and feel of the old depot has been preserved, and that effect should be intensified when the Tehachapi Depot is reopened as an engaging museum stocked with historic railroad artifacts (many of them from Bill Stokoe’s personal collection).

Now that the depot building itself is finished, there two remaining components to the overall project that must be completed before a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for spring of 2010: creating the museum inside and landscaping the area surrounding the depot.

The term “landscaping” is a bit of a misnomer in this case, because the area surrounding the depot will be home to Stokoe’s collection of functional vintage railroad signals, as well as some grass, flowers, paths and other hardscaping. The City of Tehachapi construction crew led by Mike Pera will be doing much of the exterior work with help and guidance from the Friends of the Depot.

The interior will include a freight office furnished with period artifacts, a caboose stove, a three-dimensional map of the track layout surrounding the Tehachapi Loop, a railroad timeline, historical photos, a projection screen and video presentations and many other features according to Tehachapi Heritage League president Charles White, who is the chief consultant for the museum design.

Work continues virtually every day on different fronts in the effort to complete the Tehachapi Depot project and provide both residents and visitors with an attractive, compelling facility to celebrate railroading in the Tehachapi area.

It is a source of pride that many of those who performed the depot construction were from Tehachapi, beginning of course with Aspen Builders under the direction of project superintendent Nick Cyr.

“We used local subcontractors whenever we could,” explained construction supervisor Grant Dunlop. “Among them were Rich Eaton and Sons Concrete, Barry Blagg Cabinets, All American Construction Services and Sage Custom Interiors.”

The next phase has already begun in earnest and in a few months the Tehachapi Depot will be welcoming us to Downtown.

Have a good week.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I hope your day is filled with love and laughter. As you know, my ex Mother-in law passed away last Saturday. Even though it was not a surprise it hit the kids and Grandkids really hard. She was always really good to me, even after Randy and I divorced. She was a good woman with a heart of gold. Our prayers to their family.
Life is short. I miss all of you so much. Let's try to make it to Mike' next year.

Take care all and don't eat too much!!

Thanks to all who posted notes before Thanksgiving. I haven't been on our site for a while, but like you I enjoy coming back to see who has commented. This visit I have had my heart-strings tugged on as I read about the loss of Glenna Perry. What a special person she must have been to know for all of you who grew up with her in your lives. My heart-felt sympathy goes out to all the Perry Families in their time of loss and attending to all the needs of handling such matters. I pray that forgiveness, thanks, appreciation and joy will be the ruling energies to sustain and carry you all forward and bring you into greater love and memories for the days ahead. I lost a friend's Mother who was like Glenna to me this year. How she is missed and loved !
I love hearing your news and feelings about missing each other since Re-union. We had such a wonderful time together. I, too, look forward to everyone at Mike"s. The snow is flying and it is very cold here in Colorado at the moment. I am staying as close to home as I can. I pray you are all safe and warm and cozy with loved ones near to celebrate the Holidays. Peace and Joy to all of you. May all your needs be met ! PS I really enjoyed the News article about the Depot ... Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks to all who posted Thanksgiving wishes - sorry I wasn't one of them! I came down with a horrible case of allergies/sinus, can't breathe kind of illness and let the days get by me. Hope you all had a great day. I got all my pies and cakes made in between blowing my nose! Ever done that before? :) Spent time with my mom, brothers, son and his family and when I wasn't blowing or sleeping, I was eating!
Currently I am babysitting my grandkids in Santa Barbara. We had a horribly cold and rainy day yesterday but work up this morning to the most beautiful blue sky I have seen in years. My son lives on the bluffs facing the ocean and I took a nice walk along the bluff this morning and watched the waves. Sorry John - not trying to make your "snow days" feel any worse, but hey someone has to do it! Bet Phil Drain is having nice weather too down in Mexico. Only thing I can add is - it doesn't quite seem like Christmas without the snow, but hey I'll suffer! :)
I hope everyone has a really wonderful and fun filled holiday season - whatever you celebrate. God bless and take care.

Connie, they were posted on the home page by Becky, I think but they have been replaced.
Becky, can the old photos be moved over to "photos of the day" so they aren't lost to those who log on later?

Any one else see Wanda Castro (Barrera) on the TV? She looked great, representing CHW/Mercy Hospital here in Bakersfield.
Nice Job!
