Check out "The Sixties" on CNN -

Remember the nuclear drills? All around us, the world was about to implode. But what worried me most then, was how to  avoid Jimmy  Binkley and his  antisemitic brother who could surprise me, at will,  on the way home. Or whether the very  hot Karen Brickland liked me or not. Allthough the fact that she used the perfumed soap I gave her for her birthday, to wash her floor, was a clear negative sign.

But that was  way before Eric Hamber 1964. By then Kennedy had stared down Krushchev, they would not, after all,  bury us,  Then  he had ssasinated in our 11th grade. Do you remembver that moment? I was with Jim Balogh and Bruce Clow ( where are they now?) having lunch at the bus authority cafetria on 41st  and we saw the news on TV.

Johnson took the reigns to drive young men into the jaws of  Vietnam. I really  felt a part of that post Hamber era.

It was the  time for youth to speak Truth to power.

That truth was put  to song by our prophets.  Dylan, Beatles, Cohen , etc. And molded me and a lot of our generation.

Anyways the TV series is a great vehicle to celebrate our wonderful generation

I remember that day.  I was in French class, with Monsieur Deagle.  He announced the assassination to the class.  Vic Lowe said, "Is it a joke?"  Monsieur Deagle said, "No, it is not a joke."  Classes were dismissed for the day.  I was delighted, thrilled, elated,  to get this reprieve from school.  Mr. Deagle looked at me with a gimlet eye.

Our innocence was indeed shattered the day that President Kennedy was assassinated.    All those lives lost in the Vietnam war and continually to be lost in countless other wars around the world.   I watched a wonderful doc. on Dylan the other night - Drinda

Zowie!  You have got a great view!  I am blessed with a view over the Nanaimo estuary to Gabriola Island. If I get up early in the morning,  I see the red/orange sunrise reflected in the water.  Once while I was on the Gabriola ferry I got to see a Humpback whale breaching more than a dozen times, close to the ferry.  The captain stopped the ferry,  That was the thrill of a lifetime, for me....Nanaimo still has a lot of wildflowers, even in the downtown, which is close to where I live.  I have Queen Anne's lace, Cornflowers, Daisies, Fennel (big feathery bushes),  and a spectacular bed of perrenial wild pink sweet peas that have come up faithfully for the past 11 years. ,

Dear Drinda et al

I regret that I  will not be able to attend our reunion.  However, I very much appreciate the work that you and the team has made in all the arrangements and the setting up of  the website. It has allowed me to be in touch with friends from the past and with the past itself. It was a precious time. And we were young, beautiful, and idealistic.

I think you would agree that our young voices are still singing within us, having remained unsilenced by 50 years of adulthood.

Cheers.

Leo Kron

Good to touch down into the golden sunshine of the past.  That place, that era, holds the aura of springtime forever in my heart.  To me you are still the kid who was one of the two very smart ones, along with Gary Lund....I heard just this week, via Tony Bennie, via Ruth Leckie,  that Mike Lucas has died. Ruth's sister Sandra has died too, as has Liz Hansen.  They were all in Mr. Reynold's class in Grade 7.  Mr. Reynold's has passed too.  Mr. Reynolds used to do a raid on Tony Bennie's house, which was on the corner beside the school, and kids were there unsupervised, at lunchtime, and - smoking! - Maddie

I love to see the VERY old photos of Vancouver that sometimes pop up for a minute on TV.  Last night there was a great photo of the unpainted (it seemed) tenement buildings that were still a feature of downtown Vancouver when I was a small child, that I can barely remember.  I think it was a corner that one saw as one headed into downtown via the Cambie street bus.  There was a little old corner store there too.  It was a scene so funky, and full of character, rich in detail,  - the kind of think that one sees so very rarely now.  Granville Street was such a glory back then.  There was a big flower shop near The Bay.  It had a lavish window display that was reflected in the mirrored ceiling.  A popular novelty in that window were big white christhanthemums, that had human faces on them.

Memories -sharing the glorious childhood pastimes of most of us, and the challenging times of work and family life, all such a privilege.  Best - sharing fun times with family and friends.

Leo, so, sorry you can't be with us, you will be missed and seriously we could use some of your humour!

We are heading for 60'attendees, well done.

fondly,  drinda

Hello to all my school friends which I had the pleasure of making my High School years so rewarding.

Growing apart doesn’t change the fact that for a long time we grew side by side; our roots will always be tangled. I’m glad for that. – Ally Condie

Were any of you in the band with Cliff Ketchum or Ernie Colledge?  I'd love to meet up with you at the reunion.

I was not in Mr. Ketchum's band, but I remember that he would be playing the trombone and leading the band at the same time.

Probably not the trombone, but he did play aong with his double-belled euphonium.  Great memories.
