In Memoriam Re Donald E Marshall, Class 1961 (by Charles “Buck” Tingley)
Don was born 5-9-43 in Washington DC and grew up in the Maryland suburbs.He was the youngest of seven children, Fa Jessie James Marshall, Mo Mary Hockey, both deceased.Reportedly, the parents were of Irish and Hungarian descent.Don reported many alcohol problems within his family and he himself did battle with alcohol use for many years – eventually putting it to rest in his latter years.
Don attended the University of Maryland, majoring in Engineering but discontinued this program short of graduation.Before these studies he worked for Westinghouse in St. Louis and Emerson Electric in Vietnam and Thailand.Following his University studies Don worked for METRO in DC.
In the late 1990s he gravitated to Maine.I met him one day after he mentioned to one of our agency staff that he went to Archbishop Carroll H.S. in DC.The staff member brought him to my office where we reminisced about the days and era of the 50s and 60s and the various convoluted twists and turns our lives had taken leading to this rather unlikely intersection between us.
Don was a very bright, independent and humorous man with a variety of interests including travel, geology, wood carving, art and reading and participating at St John’s Catholic Parish in Bangor.
When he left contact with our staff he had established a significant period of both sobriety and employment.
I remember most and frequently his easy, outgoing demeanor and welcoming manner that earned him the respect and affection of our staff, and, I’m sure served him well through his not infrequent challenges.
Don died on August 4, 2006.We’ll catch up with him later!
