In Memory

Raymond Freed (Faculty)

Ray Freed passed away in 1985 and I could find no formal obituary.  This article was recently posted on Facebook.  I don't know what newspaper or when it was posted.

Dr Freed was the kindest gentlemen around and had a very positive attitude.  The tragic story of his life came about on his wedding night.  While he was driving, he and his new bride were in a car accident that resulted in her death-on the wedding night.  Dr Freed blamed himself so much for the accident, that he never drove a car for the remained of his life, some 40 years.  He walked and rode bike and slowly dealt with the issue of losing his new bride and having never remarried.

This is way overdue. Seeing Kathy's post about the article on Mr.Freed compels me. This gentleman was probably the best teacher any of us who were privileged enough to have. I made a request of him to please do a reference letter for my college admissions application. He wrote the most positive and spectacular letter for me, it just blew me away. In life you may come across folks who there seems to have never heard a negative comment about- this gentleman fits that mold perfectly. He was a truly great teacher and professor and taught me a great deal about US government and history that serves me well today. I often wondered about the pain he endured after his losing his wife- it crossed my mind everytime I would see him walking in town and I had great empathy for him. Needless to say he is one of my heroes. If only there were teachers like him today. You've been gone a while now Mr Raymond Z Freed but I remember you often and smile when I do. Thank you sir.
