David Wilson

Val, please tell me....not worn at the same time, right?????

03/09/09 07:43 PM #212

Pam Griffin (Guyer)

Well, I remember my red vinyl floor length coat and knee boots. And yes, I did wear them together.

03/10/09 10:32 AM #213

Valerie Dotson (Westmoreland)

Pam, I think I remember that, too! And David, yeah, I think so!

Rick Hardy

You guys are cracking me up.

Fred..."wurly wurtlizter thing a mabob"...seriously? You must be referring to the rotating horn in the top of Mark's 910 Leslie cabinet, and that "wawa" sound was the doppler effect of the rotating horn. What were you, a drummer or something? I vaguely remember a party at Joni's house (7th grade?) and we played Spin The Bottle. I got a lucky spin and inexpertly planted one on her. I probably didn't wash my mouth for a week afterward. Heck, I probably hadn't washed it for a week before hand.

I also worked at the Old Town Restaurant doing important things like washing dishes, waiting on cars out back, etc. Then I went to Town & Country Restaurant in King...felt like I was big timing it.

Dave...you are the Memory Maestro. I also worked one summer during college at that Merita Bakery right off 52. There was a guy there who had stacked one pound loaves of bread onto trays for 30 years...he had forearms like Popeye's.

Val...hang on to those dingo boots. They were groovy once and will be again. Sorry Pam...I think the fashion ship has sailed on red vinyl floor length coats.

Valerie Dotson (Westmoreland)

Hey...those were not MY Dingo boots...they were Mike's! Tabor boys wore black and white saddle shoes. Yeah, I know; so did the girls. Whatever.

Dennis Weatherman

Hey Valerie I think I still have my dingo boots somewhere (suede leather by the way). I also had a pair of black and white saddle oxfords. It was really hard to keep the black scuff marks off the white part of those shoes, but I was styling in them.

David, I used to love going to those Saturday morning shows at the old Carolina Theater. They were the best! Going swimming in the summer at Crystal Lake off of Reynolda Rd and being scared out of my mind the first time I jumped from the 16 ft board.

Rick, I too still look to see if Pilot Mountain is visible from Reynolda Road as well as on Highway 52 Northbound just after you pass the Patterson Ave. exit.

One memory I have that I would rather forget is breaking my arm in gym class in the 9th grade at Northwest. My left forearm is still crooked to this day. Dang that Bob White for missing that judo throw.

Rick Hardy

Dennis,

I used to walk to Bob White's house with my Silvertone amp in case guitar. Chip Picot would bring his drums and we'd play things like It's Alright (JJ Jackson), Come On Up (Rascals), etc.

I have often felt like a rudderless boat in the sea of life, bobbing aimlessly along at the whim of wind and current. That mountain has been one of the islands that has always helped me to know where I've been and where I am even as I don't know where I'm going. Old Town School is another. The memories being shared in this forum are like the planks that make up the deck of my rudderless boat...some are in good shape, some are warped...but all together they sure feel good under my feet.

Pam Griffin (Guyer)

I remember the Saturday morning kiddie shows at the Carolina Theater downtown. Patty Ferguson and I would ride the city bus from Tise Avenue downtown by ourselves. Can you believe that? We were only in the 6th grade. Yeah, that old theater holds a lot of memories. Like the time, my mom caught me dancing up on the go-go girl stand. I was trying to shake something I didn't have. I think I was about 13.

Rick, the memories being shared on this forum make me feel old!

03/12/09 07:06 PM #221

Steve Kiser

I remember the Carolina Theatre as well. I think I saw a ton of Elvis movies and saw the Beatles in "Help." I also remember (ahem) going to the original K & W Cafeteria (downtown) when you dressed up and a valet carried the trays for the ladies, dressed in a white dinner jacket. Anybody remember eating a banana split at Mayberry's, or the kitchen sink? Anybody remember root beer floats? The smell of coffee beans in the old A & P at Northside? Bowling at Northside Bowling Lanes? And I am the only person who still loves to eat Sloppy Joes?

03/12/09 10:07 PM #222

Dennis Weatherman

Steve I used to love the Hot Fudge Sundaes at Mayberrys in Northside. They were the best.

To this day I still believe that Tom's Drive Inn on Cherry Street near the old Winston-Salem Drive In theater had the best hot dogs and homemade ice cream God ever created. I wish I could have one of those hot dogs now.

03/12/09 10:08 PM #223

Dennis Weatherman

Pam I think I remember seeing you doing that Go Go dance.

03/12/09 10:39 PM #224

Rick Hardy

Steve,

Heck yeah I remember root beer floats, the coffee beans, and bowling at Northside. And we had Sloppy Joes last week...can't beat 'em.

How about sugar cake and Moravian cookies? And the chicken pie at Salem Tavern is still the best.

Popcorn anywhere, but especially at the drive in and at Ernie Shore Field watching the Red Sox...pixie sticks and taffy that came in big flat sheets at the Little League games (also "suicides"...a little bit of all the fountain drinks combined in one cup)...hot chocolate with a big ole marshmallow floating on top...and anything at the Dixie Classic Fair.

When my daughter was in high school a bunch of her friends were at the house and I asked if they wanted popcorn. Without thinking I got out a pot, put some oil in it, poured in some kernels, and fixed them some popcorn old school style. They had never known anything but microwave popcorn or maybe Jiffy Pop. "Mr. Hardy, you are a popcorn chef!" Man, I can almost smell the popcorn when you walked into the Rose's store at Northside.

Dennis,

Winston-Salem lost a great institution when Tom's Drive In closed. Man, they made great milk shakes! Yeah, I know we got the new trendy ice cream places but Tom's was great. Has anybody noticed how they now call Sno-Cones shaved Hawaiian ice? They just gave the flavors new names. Ahh, I just love all those moms and pops places, old type grills. Now that is food!

Donna Canter (Goforth)

Hey Dennis -

The Fedex station where I work part-time sits right where the Winston-Salem Drive In was. Of course I am about the only one there that remembers that. Says alot for me. I work with alot of young whipper snappers.

03/13/09 02:22 PM #227

Donna Canter (Goforth)

I remember me and Wanda Fulp making dresses with the fringe on them to wear to the Kiddie show on Saturdays.
I had mine up until about 10 years ago. Just couldn't seem to part with it. Those were really the "Good old Days".

03/13/09 03:32 PM #228

Rick Hardy

Donna,

You are so right about them being the good old days, but like every generation we didn't realize it at the time. Sometimes they weren't so good but we don't remember them that way now, or at least they have been tempered by time. I remember window fans in the summertime and trying to go to sleep with that humid clammy feeling...growing up under the threat of nuclear attack (it may have been at the back of our collective consciousness but it WAS there)...introduction of the Gremlin, and so on. Hindsight may be 20-20 but thankfully as it gets older it only sees the bright happy colors.

It's a little sad to consider that these will be the good old days, but such is life. A lot of people thought our generation wouldn't amount to much, but I think we've done ok.

Renee Gilman (Chip Picot's Sister)

Just so you know...I remember a bunch of Chip's friends in our basement playing music. I remember Chip playing Wipe Out--opening our garage for all the neighborhood kids to listen to all of you play. I don't remember all your names--but I definitely remember the floor shaking in the house from the music!!!

And I remember sitting in the stands at North watching the football games. My dad would be on one side of the stadium--top row, smoking cigars and eating peanuts. I would be with Martha Apple and the Valkyries and of course, cheering with all the cheerleaders. I thought it was too cool to be part of all that. Not to mention all the crushes I had on all the football players!!!!!

Dennis, With all of the time spent in the back of the parking lot, I'm impressed you remember ANYTHING!

03/14/09 06:50 PM #231

Pam Griffin (Guyer)

I remember cruising McDonalds parking lot on Reynolda Road and eating my first Big Mac and those skinny fries.
How come they tasted some much better back then? I remember going on my first date with Gary Hines at the Pizza Hut on Reynolda after a movie. That was the best pizza. Still is as far as I'm concerned. And we used to actually go on dates back then. Today, I don't know what you call it...hangin out.

03/16/09 06:28 PM #232

Rick Hardy

Pam,

You are so right. "Back then" a date was something to be planned for and anticipated...something to get excited about and sometimes to be nervous about...and maybe sometimes dreaded.

I wasn't very good at it then...I wouldn't know how to even begin going about it now except that it would probably involve texting.

03/16/09 08:58 PM #233

Steve Kiser

Rick,

I was no whiz at dating then, either. But I tell you what blows my mind. Kids going to the prom in stretch limos and eating at the Piedmont Club. How do Moms and Dads afford it? When I took a girl to Pizza Hut and a movie, I thought I was a man of means!

03/16/09 09:23 PM #234

Rick Hardy

Steve,

You took a girl to Pizza Hut AND a movie? Ah...so that's where I went wrong.

03/16/09 09:29 PM #235

Fred Patterson

OK,,,here goes...Me and Ray Southern dating the Edwards twins one night at the drive in.. To this day I still cant pucker right! Cant remember the name of that movie! Substitute bus driver, going to Pilot Mountain on Sundays with a bucket of the Colonels' finest, hanging out with DJ Kent Newton (AKA Tom Kent) over at WAIR in the middle of the night. Rolling over graves at Forsyth Memorial Park in the middle of the night having just sneaked out of the house trying to get to a party., Pam I remember that long red coat!, thought it/you were hot!.,(oops did I just say that?).
