Krispy Kreme .....hot and greasy

My scout troop used to back up a pick up truck to the Stratford road store and load up on Sat mornings. We would drive through neighborhoods and knock on doors selling hot doughnuts, We made a lot of money for the troop back in the late 60's doing that

Fredo...there are many pretenders out there but none can compare to the hometown Krispy Kreme delight.

Rick, I agree...Krispy Kreme is the best. Dunkin' Doughnuts are the best. I remember a time in the 1980's when we had a transplanted Yankee in our church. We had a pot luck men's breakfast in our church (which is something). He brought Dunkin' Doughnuts. He was strongly urged not to make that mistake again.

Yankees....pffft. They talk weird, tip too much, prefer hash browns over grits, and think signs like "dirt for sale" are funny.

Had dinner Saturday night at Spouter Inn in Beaufort. The only Southern accents I heard were my hick Forsyth County and my wife's silky Johnston County.

Even the Brits are hip to Krispy Kreme's...I haven't been in awhile but there used to be a Krispy Kreme counter at Harrods in London and they were lined up 20 deep waiting to be served. That may have been because while the British may know how to do a parade, their food is not so good...but I prefer to believe the Hot Light makes their mouths water just like it does to us.

I ordered sweet tea at a restaurant in Franklin, MA once and they brought me a cup of hot water with a tea bag in it along with the old style glass container of sugar. That much I could accept, but the smug look on the waitress's face was almost too much to take.

My son, Tim will be attending UGA in the Fall. It was mine and my daughter's, Rebecca, delight to see Krispy Kreme being sold as a fundraiser.***As far as yanks and sweet tea goes? I have completely corrupted my yank mother-in-law. It took many years, but she drinks sweet tea AND goes bare foot indoors.

I remember the great days of summer collecting golf balls out of the Grandview Golf Club Creek. We would sell the good ones and leave the others for Wake Forest College students to find. Our favorite hiding place, from the greens keepers, was the felled tree up and behind the back pond in the woods.

Jeanne,

Have you been by what used to be Grandview lately?

I have sent many a golf ball flying into the woods and waterways at Grandview (at one time you could play at night because it was lighted). I used to wonder why all I could find were crummy Club Specials and Slazengers...now I know the answer. You had already collected the Titleists and Maxfli's.

Speaking of Grandview, for those of you who have moved away, North has a new rival, Reagan, which got RJR's old principal to move. It's on Transou Road between Reynolda and Yadkinville Roads. There is a really good restaurant near there called Southern's. Great seafood, salads, and baked spaghetti. Has a banquet room, too.

My parents and other family members probably eat at Southern's once a week. Good food, fairly varied menu, reasonable prices, and friendly wait staff.

My mom used to shop at the Grandview grocery store. We would enter the store and I'd bolt for the comic book section, where I would hang out with my super hero pals until she was finished.
