John S Hammond

Dr. John Sherman Hammond, born October 16, 1950, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2017 in Plymouth, MN, from pancreatic cancer. He was 66 years old. John will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Elaine, who joined him on his adventures and became his life partner in 2003. He is also survived by his daughter Becky (Josh), son David (Chelsea), son Mark (Annika), brother Tim (Barb), brother David Michael, grandchildren: Charles, Emma, Sophia, Selah, and Josiah; and several beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by Edward, his father, Elizabeth, his mother, and his Aunt Martha. John lived to work. After growing up in Berea, OH, he graduated from Denison University in 1972 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemistry and from Purdue University in 1976 with a PhD. in Analytical Chemistry. After graduation, he worked for Ford Motor Company-Science Research Lab. In 1981 John opened his own research laboratory in Edison, New Jersey, for PerkinElmer/PHI/Physical Electronics USA. He continued to work for the company after moving to Minnesota. John held various positions over his 37-year career. His children remember him as a driven man who worked hard to provide for his family. Outside of work, John was a lover of nature and a lifelong Boy Scout. He was an accomplished SCUBA diver and often took time during his world travels to dive local sites. A dedicated individual, his love for science and learning may arguably have been matched by his desire to pass on what he knew to those around him. John turned on the minds of scientists, young and old, all over the world! His curiosity of all things led him to always want to know more, be it history, politics, diversity, or global awareness. He was an avid bridge player, a good listener, and a better friend. John will be remembered by his family and friends in a Celebration of Life. September 30, 2017, 11:00 AM Parish Community of St. Joseph The Little Church 13015 Rockford Rd Plymouth, MN 55441 All are welcome to attend and celebrate John's life. In Bridge parlance, that’s the game and rubber. We wanted more of him, for much longer. John will be remembered and missed by those of us left behind.
