David M. Anderson, 65, passed away suddenly on May 5, 2016. He was born in Glenridge, NJ and grew up in Berea, Ohio. He graduated from Berea High School in 1968 and attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he met fellow student Penny Brian, who was to later become his lifelong partner. After graduation in 1972, Dave was employed as the Youth and Camping Director of the YMCA in Cambridge, MA. Dave and Penny were married in 1976 and have been best friends, hiking and camping buddies and travelling companions for 40 years. After travelling around the U.S. for a year they finally ended up in Sacramento where Dave took a job at the Sacramento YMCA as a Program Director, later becoming the Executive Director. He then went to work for Spare Time, Inc. as a program consultant, which launched his 35-year career with the company. At this time Dave also earned his MBA from CSU Sacramento. As President of Spare Time, Dave oversaw the development and management of nine fitness and tennis facilities in the northern California region, including Gold River Racquet Club, Broadstone Racquet Club and Diamond Hills Racquet Club, to name a few. Under his leadership, Spare Time set the standard for family-friendly sports and fitness clubs. Dave enjoyed hiking and jeeping with Penny in the Sierras near their cabin in Graeagle, CA. Trips to the cabin were a source of great joy to them. He loved history, art and music and was a supporter of the Sacramento Symphony and the Mondavi Center in Davis. Dave loved to travel and he and Penny took trips to Hawaii, Italy, Costa Rica, New Zealand, England and France. Dave volunteered with the Sacramento "Y's Club", the 20-30 Club, the Boy Scouts, as a basketball coach and taught Sunday school. He is survived by his wife Penny Brian Anderson, their sons Bradley Anderson (Keshia) and Kevin Anderson, his brother William Anderson (Jean), sister Phyllis Mosher (Robert), brother Robert Anderson (Anita), as well as his nieces and nephews. Dave was a charismatic leader who radiated intellect, passion and a disarming sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Dave's life will be held at Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, 11427 Fair Oaks Blvd., Fair Oaks on Friday, July 8 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Sacramento YMCA, the USO or the National Parks Conservation Association.
