Jean Ann Miller (Schroeder)

I just wanted to wish a very Happy Birthday to Judy. I hope you have a very nice day!! I hope your weather is better than it is in Knox County. The county roads are covered with a glaze of ice. The main roads may be alright by now. (When you live out in the country, you can't see the State Road conditions.) Have a great day:)

JEAN:

Here is the State Road conditions for you "country folk" !

ROADS ARE DAMN SLICK !!!!

I left Patoka (in my tractor/trailer) and it took me 50 minutes just to get back to Vincennes ! Then left Vincennes (in my pick up) and took about an hour and 10 minutes to get back here to Freelandville.

Wheeeeeew.....had to pry my hands loose from the steering wheel when I got home !

Happy Birthday to Judy,

I have been in Freelandville visiting my folks. Sorry to all, I was hoping to see some of you. Maybe next time.

I just got a facebook message from Leslie Jones. I wrote her and told her to please join us in our group. I think she is in Evansville.

I hope I can make it to the airport in Indy tomorrow to get on the airplane to Charlotte. I have to fly Thursday.

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

Happy Birthday Judy! Hope all your wishes come true.

Ditto on the weather, Tom. It was a nasty drive home. There had been a wreck on the Sunshine curve, and traffic going toward Bicknell had a terrible time trying to get up that hill and curve. Oh by the way, congrats on the award! Great employees are hard to find. Baby Ava's mom must be about as "fan-atical" about Elvis as you, lol. Ava's middle name is Presley.

Hey, Leslie! Long time no see. Hope you'll join in here and fill us all in about yourself.

I scanned some pictures from some old yearbooks when I was home. I will try to post them over time. How come there were so many pictures of Danny Roark in the old yearbooks? You all are making me nervous having to drive to Indy tomorrow morning.

Kathy Diane Dunn (Steele)

Happy Birthday Judy! Perhaps you are getting to spend the day away from work? Hope you have a great day and the weather is better for you than we "southern folks"! Roads are covered with ice, but still managed to get to work on time today. Happy Birthday!

Dick, hope you arrived home safely. I will see your mom on Fri. and will hear all the news.:))

Leslie, Now you know where we are, lets hear a little chatter from you. Glad you found us.

Hey guys this is so much fun now if I just learn how to use a computer. I bought my first one while living in Las Vegas so i could play euchre. I just found some cool picutes in my Senior memory book so i need to get them on a disc (walgreens here I come).I recently moved to San Antonio and am helping my sister Pam in her law office. I was bartending in Las Vegas for 20 some years before that. My first move from Indiana was to Hawaii where I was a bartender. By the way while I lived in Hawaii I won a contestant search and was on the Wheel of Fortune. Anyone catch that? I promise to get busy and get these pictures posted ASAP. Hey Mr. Finke my hat's off to you for the incredible job you've done. If you're ever in Vegas go to my bar The Kopper Keg we use to do cheers about North Knox Warriors. By the way the pass word at the door is Hot Toddy and I am Ms. Kopper Keg.
Love to all, Leslie

Dick Finke, I'm addressing this to you. I just went over some prior messages and you asked if anyone knew Bill Wheat in Bicknell. I can't find anything on You Tube about him but he lived in a two story house on main street with his Mother. He was a very strange dude and I always remember hearing the story that he molested some young boys. And at Halloween all the kids use to go around town saying "Trick or Treat I'm Bill Wheat (sic)
And a graphic line that followed which I won't repeat. Anyone else from Bicknell that remembers that? Leslie

12/19/08 09:03 AM #411

Kathy Diane Dunn (Steele)

Yes Leslie I remember the tales of Bill Wheat and also the verse that followed!

I am working half a day today and starting a week's vacation. Here's hoping that everyone has a very Merry Christmas and blessed New Year.

Hi Leslie! I saw you on Wheel of Fortune. Please, tell us more about it.

Wishing everyone a peaceful Christmas and a new year of hope!

Leslie, Where is that bar in Vegas? We stay at the La Quinta near the Hard Rock. The Bill Wheat Legend video can be found by searching on YouTube for "Bicknell, Indiana". You will see it. The tractor pull from the fair is also on there. Anyway, Leslie good to hear from you.

I enjoyed my quick trip to IN. Wish I could have seen some of you.

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Great New Year.

12/20/08 10:33 AM #414

Leslie Jones (Palcovic)

Dick, All I found was the tractor pull. But my bar is on Tropicana and Mt. Vista. There are about 6 Kopper Kegs all over the city but the one on Trop and Mt. Vista is the first one my bosses opened it's been there about 25 years. It's a great Local bar but probably not as great since I'm not there. (or so says me)

I am going to post one of my favorite Christmas songs. I have always liked it, but I had never really thought about the words. I think it is a fun song but the words are worth thinking about in regards to our world. I hope you enjoy reading them.

Christmas Songs
Snoopy's Christmas lyrics

The news had come out in the First World War
The bloody Red Baron was flying once more

The Allied command ignored all of its men
And called on Snoopy to do it again.

Was the night before Christmas, 40 below
When Snoopy went up in search of his foe
He spied the Red Baron, fiercely they fought
With ice on his wings Snoopy knew he was caught.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ring out from the land
Asking peace of all the world
And good will to man

The Baron had Snoopy dead in his sights
He reached for the trigger to pull it up tight
Why he didn't shoot, well, we'll never know
Or was it the bells from the village below.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land
Bringing peace to all the world
And good will to man

The Baron made Snoopy fly to the Rhine
And forced him to land behind the enemy lines
Snoopy was certain that this was the end
When the Baron cried out, "Merry Christmas, my friend"

The Baron then offered a holiday toast
And Snoopy, our hero, saluted his host
And then with a roar they were both on their way
Each knowing they'd meet on some other day.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land
Bringing peace to all the world
And good will to man

SNOOPY'S CHRISTMAS (1966) by the Royal Guardsmen.....a "garage band" from Florida.

Can that actually have been 42 years ago ? Say it ain't so.

The reason I am writing so much today is that I am on a 25 hour layover here in a hotel in San Francisco. This morning I got up at 9 am Eastern time and went down to my usual Breakfast place, a little hole in the wall place that serves good food. Of course it was 6 am here and still dark. As I walked the 5 or 6 blocks in the dark, there were very few people out on this cold morning. I made eye contact with a guy (I believe), who was dressed as a lady. I imagine he was just finishing a long night of work. She or he asked if I could spare some change. I said no only because I would go broke here, if I gave money to everyone who asked me for money. As I walked away, the person said " I am sure some people have a lot of money." With a slight pause, they then said, " Have a Merry Christmas anyway." I felt bad not giving the person some money, but what can I say. I also felt very fortunate to have a very good life. I just thought I would share my feelings on these days before Christmas.

Dick, I watched the You Tube you sent. I think the whole thing must be a joke. The only Legend to speak of that I know is Bill Wheat was a very strange, and liked young boys, and I think these kids were poking fun at him. By the way he lived directly across the street from Donna DeMoss. Maybe Donna will click on some day and she has a story about that. Just saw the new pictures of 8th grade Freelandville Jr. High. I named everyone except the guy next to Linda Meyers, Who was that?

OK Dick, here is my take on the three pics that you posted:
--------------------------------------------------------

PIC # 1:
Where am I in the photo ? Not really sure.

(a)I am backstage tuning my Jimi Hendrix
"Signature Model" Fender Stratocaster in
preperation for my performance of Elvis'
"Blue Christmas".

(b)I had enough sense to be sick that day,
so I would not have to be seen in those
stupid looking outfits....with lipstick ?!!

(c)I am standing between Pam Dunkerly (?) and
Phil Rinsch (?) in the back row ??????
-------------------------------------------------------

PIC #2:
Are you sure this is 4th grade ? If it was, then Susan Sutherland would have been our teacher. It is hard to believe I would have spent my recess playing outside, when I could have been inside, making "goo-goo eyes" at Miss Sutherland, my first "crush" !!!!!!!!
Whatever grade it was, it was obviously Cub Scout Troop #126 meeting day at Mike Land's house after school OR it was school picture day. We used to wear our scout uniforms for school pics. By the way, that Cub Scout uniform is hanging in my closet as we speak.....where is yours ?
--------------------------------------------------------

PIC #3:
Whoever did the lay-out / positioning of these student photos, must have known that Leslie was my "main squeeze" / "hottie cheerleader" girlfriend in the 8th grade......by putting us next to one another. I have always wondered about that. Leslie, did you have anything to do with this ?
Also, if you will notice Steve "Lee Harvey" Telligman is positioned just above me, with an erie look on his face. An ominous sign of things to come.
As you may or may not know, in Jan. of that school year, Telligman gunned me down with his .22 rifle, as I stood practicing my basketball skills in the supposed safety of my own backyard.........only to replace me on the starting five of our "soon-to-be" Knox County Jr. High Championship basketball team.

FYI: "Lee Harvey" still has that gun and has it on display in his house !

OK Tom I was thihnking the very same thing when I looked at the 8th grade picture. Very strange Wayne Boberg is next to Debbie Odell(and they were an item) and you and I are together so it couldn't be alphabetically done. I so remember the afternoon you got shot. I cried and cried and either Cheryl Trotters Mom picked me up and took me to your house or your Mom picked me up on your way home from the hospital because I remember being there. I also for some reason remember Rev. Varns BYF (or whatever it was called re: youth fellowship) having a hayride and we kissed and kissed several times I think. OMG I just remembered the time that Debbie Odell (or maybe it was Rachel Varns) that put a needle on the chair that Bob Horst sat on and he had to have if removed surgically. Does that ring a bell?

Leslie: Might have been Cheryl's mom that picked you up and brought you to my house, as Cheryl was standing there with me when I was "struck down" in my athletic prime by the would-be assasin's bullet.
When I got shot and was laying on the ground, Cheryl's first words to me (honestly) were "do you like me, or do you like Leslie" ! (She apparently did not realize what had happened) We still laugh about that.

Yes, I remember the hayride ! We were "gettin' after it", while everyone else was acting like morally-responsible, young adults.....we were just simply, down right disgusting, were'nt we ? LOL !!!!!

For anyone interested in taking a "trip back in time" to the 1960's and re-discovering some of the bands that played at local area high school sock-hops, teen clubs, skating rinks, etc..., then, Google these links:

INDIANA 45's.COM

INDIANA BAND SZENE

INDIANA GARAGE BANDS

GARAGE HANGOVER

It might take some searching around at these sites, but you'll eventually run across the name of a band that will open up your "memory floodgates" !
Remember The Olivers, Sir Winston & The Commons, The Boys Next Door, The Legends ? They all played at the NKHS gym.

You Sandborn Bluejays, being close to Linton, might recall some of the bands that played at the Linton Teen Center or at The Armory.
Personaly, I saw a band at The Armory (from Indy, I believe) called Tom Dooley & The Love Lights. I had not thought about them in years.
Linton Teen Center had some very good local bands. Rough place. though ! NK kids best stayed away. I always went with the late Philip Rinsch. Philip knew everyone in Linton....so we were safe from Linton bullies....(well, kinda).

Anyone who was a regular at Lamey's every Saturday night to hear the Corvettes, might recall some other Evansville area bands. How about The Turks (originally Young Turks), The Villians, The Nomads, Roadrunners (Owensboro, I think), The Coinsmen (Princeton), The Legends (Washington),, The Wylds and The Apollos (Mt. Carmel.

So, anyway, if you are "into it", checkout these sites.
I absolutely guarantee you Pat Grabbe can recall everyone of these bands and a bunch more.
--------------------------------------------------------

Note of interest:
My wife went to school at Evansville Harrison (class of '69). Her boyfriend was Jeff Davis, who was bass player for The Nomads.
In the 80's, Jeff was bassist for the Amazing Rythum Aces, who had a national #1 hit with "Third Rate Romance, Low Rent Rendevous". He is currently a studio musician based in Nashville, TN.
Anyone wanting Amazing Rythum Aces hats, bumper stickers, buttons, etc......contact me, as he sent my wife boxes and boxes and boxes of it years ago !!!!! LOL

Tom & Leslie, Thanks for reminiscing about some old times. I remember them well. I think I was with Rachel on the hayride. As I recall, she did not approve of your behavior. LOL.

On Facebook there are two classmates listed who I am wondering who they are. They are Pam Langferman and Lucy Messer. With married names it makes it tough to figure out who they are. Pam may be Kramer or Stanczak. I am not sure who Lucy would be. I have emailed them through facebook, but they have not replied.

Tom, I will take a look at those bands you mentioned.
