Dick:
Just so happens, I learned to play Alabama's "Christmas In Dixie" on guitar a few weeks ago. It is for sure one of my favs, too.
Note of interest: In 1995, Cindy & I were in Nashville, TN for the weekend. We were in the Ernest Tubb Record Shop (Music Valley Dr. store) and noticed next door, that evening would be the grand opening of Alabama Gift Shop. Went back that night and got to meet Randy Owen (lead singer)....have video of Randy and my wife talking and hugging ! Give him credit, he took the time to talk with us, instead of trying to give us the "brush-off" as so many in his position would do.

Back years ago, I used to do an imitation of Jose Feliciano (complete with sunglasses) doing "I Want To Wish You A Merry Christmas" (English version). BTW, I do many imitations, so as to be able to make a total fool of myself at parties and such, as many of my friends locally will attest to ! LOL

You could not have picked two more appropriate Christmas songs, in my opinion.

Re: Hayride
Yes, I heard later that Ruth Varns was none to impressed with me and Leslie. Oh, well....

Dick, As I remember in the first picture we were playing small instruments for maybe a Christmas program. I still have my picture also. Why don't you have yourself identified? Found you, Carol, Joe, Jean Walker, Wayne, Rosalee, Freddie, & Eugene. Also recognize most of the "older" students, mainly because it was Becky's class.

It's Pam Kramer and maybe Lucinda Privett or Lucille Moore?

Leslie Jones (Palcovic)

Just got a response from my facebook inquiry from Pam Kramer. She was glad to find out about this site and looks forward to logging on. I am taking the day off work and am working on my pictures. Guess my next purchase will be a digital camera. but not before I learn to use this computer and my cell phone.

Wishing you and yours a Happy and Safe Holiday Season.

Leslie

It has been a good week finding classmates. Leslie, Dorothy, and Pam all signed on. We may get everyone on yet. I am in depression today after the Panther's loss in OT last night. I am not a good loser. Maybe we can beat New York in a rematch in the playoffs.

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

Hey, welcome Pam and Lucy! It's great to hear from you two. And please - spread the word about this website. You just never know what stories you'll find when you sign on.

Nice pictures, Rich. Jeff has been trying to identify some of the kids. Not much luck so far. What's the weather like in San Fran? You're missing the deep freeze here! Tomorrow there's supposed to be a heat wave - 31 degrees. Maybe rain on Christmas.

Tom, do you also remember the Village Green band? I was "going with" Terry Dreiman about that time. woohoo.

Leslie, I remember in 8th grade a bunch of girls rode together to a basketball game at Freelandville. When we got there, I spent some time chatting with you on the "enemy" side. On the way home, it was rather frosty in the car, as my seeming defection was apparently viewed with disapproval. lol

LU:
What do you mean the "enemy side" ! You ended up marrying one of "the enemy" !

Yes, I remember The Village Green. I recall they did an obscure song off an album (or "B" side 45) by the Young Rascals called "Come On Up". One of my favs. Only local band I ever heard do that song.
Also, The Synes....(Mark Mason, John Brocksmith, the late Allan Warren, Gilbert Gauger, Curtis Scott). The Synes kicked our butts in the 1967 Knox County Fair "Combo Contest". We came back and won in 1968.
I believe we beat the Bob Synder/ Bill Cliver/ Steve Coonrod band in '68. Not sure of their name.

There was a band called the Midnight Riders (?)led by Steve Stone. Not sure Steve Stone attended all four years at NKHS. We played a "Battle Of The Bands" at the Lazy-D-Roller Rink in Monroe City against them one night in '68.
Grab....do you recall these guys ?

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

Yeah Tom, I married a Kraut and my big brother used to tease me terribly about that! Even sorta became one myself, having lived there 25 years. By the time our boys came along, just about the only things that tied them to their hometown of Freelandville was summer baseball and 4-H. They went to school in Edwardsport, church in Bicknell, etc.

Leslie, I'd forgotten about the golf balls. That shows I have always loved ice cream! Dad used to tease about piping it to our house from the Treet. Breaking a leg in 3 places sounds awful. What happened?!?

Guess I should explain that Terry D. was a member of the Village Green along with his older brother _______? and others.

I do recall Steve Stone being in a band, I do not know how long he was at NKHS. Do you remember Vernon Huber, I was wanting to say that he played with Steve's band, maybe not. Did Bob Horst compete against us in the Synes.
I have some great memories of the Lazy Dee, Midway, on the parachute at Dugger, South Knox, Tastee treat, and where ever else we played. If you remember, our first time to be announced on the radio was when we fronted the Corvettes at Midway on Sunday night. It was hell to have to go back to school the next morning. I talked to Bailey who owened the Midway a while back and asked if he still had all the pictures that he had hanging of all the bands who had played there. He said they had all been misplaced. Jerry Lee Lewis, The American Breed, and many more, including us. Do you also remember me borrowing Marty Fredrick's Fender Coronado because something went wrong with my Rick. Marty was out there to listen to us,found out I had a problem and went into Princeton and got his guitar and brought it out just in time to play. Marty played with the Koinsmen.

Merry Christmas to all. May your wishes come true!

GRAB: I do remember Vernon Huber (and the lovely Bonnie Huber !). I do not remember him playing with Steve Stone's band, but he could have. I recall at the "Lazy Dee Battle Of The Bands", his band opened the "battle" with Mitch Ryder's "Sock It To Me, Baby". Kinda worried me, they were pretty good, but we held our own. I think that Mize dude (that owned the Lazy Dee) put the screws to us on our pay everytime we played there ! Bob Horst did play keyboards for The Synes. Not sure if he played at the "Combo Contest". Not even sure how he suddenly learned to play keyboards(?). Synes played "Time Won't Let Me". Curtis Scott could really "nail" that drum roll at the end of the intrumental break. That won it for them ! Remember playing at Indianapolis at the Marrott Hotel (25th & Fall Creek Parkway) for the statewide Christian Youth Convention ? If I recall, Boberg's dad drove us up there..... Didn't we somehow get a bottle of Four Roses whiskey into our room ? We split it four ways !! Believe we went to some girl's room that afternoon. Thought we were pretty cool because we were "with the band" !!! I had forgotten about all the band pics on the wall at The Midway. American Breed, Jerry Lee Lewis and us ! WOW ! I saw Jerry Lee at the Owensboro Rivermont back in the early 80's. He's everything he is made out to be ! Kicked ass !! Last time I was down that way, the Miday building was barely standing....falling down and over grown with weeds. Is it still there ? Don't recall you borrowing Marty's Coronado ? I remember I used Don Russell's Fender Jazz bass that night. Also, recall Neil "smashing" Kenny new aluminum -framed tamborine and Kenny running in the restroom and refusing to come out !! We wore our blue satin turtlenecks that night. Of course, "Keenya" wore a white-satin turtleneck, white pants and white boots. That right there, should have been a "red flag" as to "how he was" !!!!!! Someone came up to the stage after the dance and said we were pretty good, but the guy doing lead vocals is awful. (Sorry, Keenya !) Google "Garage Hangover" and click on Indiana bands. You'll see a great article on The Villians. Contains photos and audio file of their records. Comments page at the site talks about The Villians recording some tapes in Bruceville at the Corvette's studio (Neil's garage ?). Also, Indiana45s.com has some history of The Olivers (audio file), Nomads, Corvettes, The Turks. One of the first songs we learned was Diane by The Turks. Do you know if Rex still has any of the History of the Corvettes CD's to sell ? I'm sure some people at this site would be interested in purchasing one. If he does, you might want to post his mailing address here. Well worth the $15. Leslie e-mailed me and asked me about the Steve Telligman penned song "Twenty Five Hours A Day". She actually remembered that !! Lottsa good memories of the old band and hangin' out on Saturday's at Little Joe's Music Store, occasionally heading down to Seberings. Wouldn't trade it for a million bucks ! UPDATE: I just read where a man died in a house fire on Tuesday (12/23/08) in Evansville. That was Steve Hacker. He was the bass player for the Villians. Google...(Steve Hacker - house fire - Evansville).....to read newspaper article. The article interviews '68 Evansville Harrison grad Jeff Davis of The Nomads, Amazing Rhythum Aces and currently Pure Praire League (my wife's high school boyfriend).

I had to share this with everyone and although it won't be as funny for you, I'm certain you'll laugh. Last night before I went to bed I was looking for one particular picture and I found myself browsing the class picture of 8th grade Freelandville Jr. High. I remember at the time saying to myself "Wow look at all these guys with suits and or ties on for the class picture." Times have really changed and I started thinking of the way kids dress now and at least the way most kids want to present themselves today. Well, shortly after that I went to bed and I had this dream and obviously my inner conscience was on that picture because I remember seeing Wayne Boberg, Rich Finke, Tom Held, Steve Telligman and I think Pat Grabbe standing there with there picture attire from the waist up but from the waist down their pants were shorts and they were the new style (you know the kind where the crotch is hanging below the kneecap.) If memory serves me correctly I woke up shortly thereafter and thinking to myself about that dream and remember seeing someones crack of their butt. Well follks it was funny for me and I hope you can at least get a chuckle or two. Let your mind go free. Leslie

Dick, My guess as to the identity of the girl in the photo on the homepage is LuEllen. At least, when you click on it, that's what the caption at the bottom of the photo says !!!!!!!!!! Re: The way kids / people dress today.... What really gets me, are the people who wear their pajamas in public ! I am at Wal-Mart every morning and never cease to be amazed by these morons ! Most just wear their pajama bottoms, but some actually come as if they just got out of bed.....complete with "fuzzy" house slippers !! Even saw an adult man, probably in his 40's, wearing his PJs ! Is this considered normal in today's world, or have I just turned into an old fuddy-duddy ?

12/27/08 01:57 PM #440

Leslie Jones (Palcovic)

Tom, I think that's cheating!!! You may have to stay after class and write an essay on cheating. In fact that reminds me of a time (6th grade) we had a magician or some type of entertainers in the gym putting on some kind of show. I was my normal mischievious self and Ms. Caldwell made me stay in at recess and write an essay on The Proper Deportment of a 6th grade girl. Man how did I even know what that word "deportment" meant. No wonder Mr. Roache was my favorite teacher. Followed in high school by Mr. Skeens. (we shared the same birthday, along with Rachel Varns and Bill Menke).

Rich, I noticed when I clicked on Lu's picture it took me to some of my pictures you downloaded. For as many years as I've had the picture of my 9th birthday party and as many times as I've looked at it, today was the first time I noticed that you can see Carla Wamplers underwear. (ROFLMAO)

Re: Chuck Roche Mr. Roche was also my favorite teacher. He still lives in the Vincennes area. I run into him once in awhile. He has horses that he keeps out at the horse barn at Green Farms sub-division. He surfed into the old Freelandville Dutchmen Website a few years ago and signed the guestbook while he was there. He told me later that it brought back memories of some very special times in his life. Leslie When are we going to see the Valentine I gave you ? I hope it doesn't have anything romantic written on it !! You know how shy I am and how easily I get embarassed !

12/27/08 02:57 PM #443

Leslie Jones (Palcovic)

Tom, The message I got from Rich after I downloaded (or uploaded) whichever is correct, pictures I forwarded he wanted to spread them out over time. But if you click on Lu's picture it takes you to some of the pictures. In fact you'll see a flyer from 1967 announcing the "Corvettes" will be playing at the Bruceville Rod & Gun Club every Sunday. In fact that flyer is even autographed by the guys in the band. Wonder if i can sell that on E Bay? The Valentine was merely your commitment to Love Me Always. Leslie

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

Tom you win the grand prize for identifying that sweet little girl!

Rich, whatever made you pick my photo to click on? Was it because I was the only girl who wore pants to school that day? There was a good reason for that, but darned if I know now what it was.

Isn't Mrs. Steffen lovely in that picture? She was a nice teacher, but watch out when she snapped those fingers at you!! Anybody remember how loud it was? I was impressed.

Tom, jammies have to be better than a lot of bare skin, especially on those who are - let's say - a little pudgy..

12/27/08 08:28 PM #445

Leslie Jones (Palcovic)

Lu, I had to go back and check out the picture, can't believe I never noticed the pant thing before. Oh my for sure I remeber those fingers snapping and scaring the crap out of me. I can remember her making me cry. Then we moved on to 2nd grade and got Ms. Bonhome. I could hardly wait to go to 3rd grade to have Mrs. Easton. I only went for part of the year and my Mom remarried and we moved to North Main Street Road.I then went to Vigo 4th and 5th. Then to Freelandville 6th-8th. That helps me understand how Bonabeth and Carla were at my 9th birthday party. Then the Vigo School I went to suddenly became consolidated and named North Knox. I think we were lucky to grow up when we did. Life was so much simplier and fun. Music was music and the bad ass kids back then were so because they smoked, not because they came to school with guns or knives, I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. Leslie

12/27/08 10:44 PM #446

Richard Finke

It made my day getting those pictures from Leslie. I cannot see BonaBeth in that Birthday picture at all. Most of the others I can recognize.

Lu, I am not sure why I picked you, but since you are a big contributor to our site, I thought why not.

Leslie, you and your sister, Pam look a lot alike. At first, I thought your sister was you in the picture.

My mom went to Westside around 1926 or so when she was in grade school. Where did the east side people go in Bicknell?

I got a kick out of Bill and Dennis wearing ties to your party.

Leslie, Do you have any pictures of the party at your home in junior high or early high school?

I have my 6th birthday party that I will post sometime and a prom picture of Kathy Watson and myself.

Kathy Dunn, What were you doing in that picture of you, Pam, Rita, and Cheryl?

Tom, the Valentine cards you sent Leslie will be posted in February.

Dick: The party at Leslie's home was in Jr. High and it was a birthday party for her and Rachael Varns. (Birthdays on the same day)

12/28/08 10:04 AM #448

Leslie Jones (Palcovic)

Rich, I thought the picture of Bonabeth looked exactly like her. If you lived on East side you went to Central. Certainly seems confusing now that I think of it. I remember that party. We cleared a path back in the woods and roasted marshmallows and hot dogs. Then we brought out the record player and danced, I remember people even dancing in the fishing pond. I don't remember having any pictures of that party, but I do remember that party. Sure wish I hadn't thrown so many pictures and memories away.... Hindsight

RE: Leslie's party.... I do remember the party being back up in the woods. One thing that has always stuck in my mind about that party was the 'fainting / passing out" fad that was being done by kids at that time. By that, I mean you would hold your breath for about 30 seconds, then someone would get behind you and squeeze you around your chest with their arms. Result....you would pass out for a few seconds. I remeber having this done to me up in the woods at Leslie's party. Whoever it was that squeezed me, didn't bother to catch me when I passed out. I went face first into the ground and got a mouthful of dirt & grass ! Does anyone else remember this ?? Also recall going to Leslie's house after football practice at Hooper Feild and my mom would pick me up there at about 6:00pm on her way home from work in Vincennes. RE: Old photos.... I have every photo I ever took from over the years. Never threw anything away. Most would not be of much interest to those at this site, but I got'em !! Plus, some pics would be embarrasing to a certain NK70 grad who lives in Edwardsport ! (Intials...MGS) And pics could be used as evidence in a court of law, as the statute of limitations may not have expired on some of mine & MGS's adventures !! Question for Dick: Why do airlines not provide permanent layover facilities at the airport for flight crews ? Would this not be more cost effective in the long run, than staying at a hotel ?
