Mike,

Some of the other businesses during our time in the downtown area: bowling lanes (first block of second street) along with Nomady's, (Tom probably spent time there), newspaper office (my mom worked there for awhile), gas station, and VFW or Legion hall. Taxi service - anybody else remember that (couple doors down from the City Hall), Moose Lodge, Cafe across from Moose Lodge (during lunch we used to go there, I would go in the front door of the newspaper office, get money from mom and run out the back door and into the back door of the cafe).

Between third and fourth streets - Smith Appliances, a barber shop, another cafe you and I would eat lunch at because they had plate lunches.

I remember one day getting paddled by Mrs. French in sixth grade and my mom found out before I could even get downtown for lunch (lunch wasn't quite as good that day).
And if I remember right, I think you should have been involved in that little episode but you sat down when she came to our room to get me. It had something to do with a letter from Terri Lee - WOW, that girl was ahead of our times.

Thanks for all the memories of Bicknell. My grandparents, Stella and Lester Parker lived at 422 W. 4th Street so I spent some time in Bicknell. I would go with my Grandmother to Kroger's. On Holidays, after dinner, Eliane and I would walk to the Colonial for a movie. I believe my sister, Nancy had a date once with Mike Love, whose dad I believe had the Colonial. I guess the date didn't go well because she only had one. We would eat often after church on Sunday at the Cafeteria across from the hardware store. I cannot remember the name, but they had great chicken and noodles, cream corn, mashed potatoes, and great pies. I remember going to Dr. Byrnes also on main steet and to Dr. Vendes on Main initially and then on 3rd street. Both Doctors still amaze me to this day how professional they both were and how neatly they wore their white uniforms. I liked going into Dunns. It is a funny thing to remember, but the smell in that store was very unique and enjoyable. Must have been the new smell of clothes. I believe Alma and Kettle had the hardware store on main at one time. They were friends of my mom and dad's. I belive their names were Kettlehut and he may have been from Freelandville. He was a coal miner at one time. I can remember visiting him outside on the lawn at Good Samaritan after he broke both legs down in the coal mine. I could go on and on with the memories. I hope some others will chime in also.

Oh, my gosh! How come you guys remember so much more about that city block? Why ask my Mom now? Here's some more downtown businesses you might recall? Kixmiller Dodge, Jeff says Beachers machine shop nearby, Stan & Joe's Station with an ice machine around back where you got blocks of ice (does anyone still have an ice pick?), Brandt's cleaners, I think Mac's cafeteria is the one somebody mentioned. Dr. Wilson on 3rd St. just off Main, Nocus IGA further down Main, the grocery store building Tom mentioned is gone now - it was on the corner across the st. from Wampler-Shaw Funeral Home. Mayfair's Dry Goods on 2nd St just off Main, Bastide's tavern ("classy" joint run by my uncle Henry). Johnson's gas station where Scott's dentist office is. Yes, there was a house across from the post office - it is where Dick Pitcher grew up. I remember the metal fence around the house, it was like round pipe or something, and I walked it a time or three. Doc Carrico had a vet's office down by the railroad tracks - oh yes, remember that trains used to pass thru town? Next to Smith's appliances, my grandmother Emma Byrer had an ice cream shop but I do not actually recall visiting it. I do have a picture of her there. The Horn sisters had a beauty shop in behind D&M drugs. The library was upstairs in city hall, now that was one of my favorite places to visit, Mrs. Douthitt sitting up high (well at least to this pipsqueak) behind the desk stamping your card with the due date, along with a stop at D&M for a green river or cherry phosphate or marshmallow pepsi - yum! I remember the bus station being in a house on the corner by the school. The couple who later bought and lived there said people would walk right in thinking it was still the bus station! Can you name some of the neighborhood grocery stores that dotted the town? Oh, and yes Kathy Jarmin was married to Beldon H.

The ice house behind the Sinclair station brings back good memories. I had to make sure the belts were loaded with ice in the evenings, a great job on a hot summer day. There was a machine on a pole next to the ice house that sold ice picks, I have always wondered how many teen age boys lost money in that machine thinking they were buying something that shall we say was intended to be used for birth control. When Bicknell still had a high school, Kixmiler Dodge would keep the doors open at lunch and the high school boys would cut through their show room on their way downtown. My how times have changed. Anybody remember going down the block from the Colonial to buy refreshments?

Yes Dick....I also remember the smell of clothing(?) in Dunn's and remember going to Dr. Vendes office on Main Street. What year did those businesses on Main burn down ? I talked with Paul Scott of Westphalia today. He passed along some Bicknell history. The bowling alley was originally the Indiana Theatre. While the Colonial showed current movies of the time, the Indiana Theatre showed western movies every Saturday....many of which were serial westerns, meaning they were continued from week to week. For a short time in the late 70's(?), the old bowling alley was a nightclub of sorts. I can remember going there a few times to hear the bands that played on Sat. night. Seems like the name of the place had the word "Blue" in it. Anyone remember this club ? Concerning the old Kroger store - This was originally Hash (family) Grocery Store. In 1957, Kroger leased the business from the Hash family and operated it until it closed in 1966, with Paul as manager, along with help from his brother Don Scott. Lu I believe Jeff might be on to something with the "ears" in the photo of Freelandville kindergartners. That is the reason I thought the boy might be Richard Clinkenbeard. But, Jeff's mention of the late Bob Woolard seems more likely. BTW, tell Jeff with Labor Day weekend approaching, I am getting a bad case of Nationals fever !!!

Rich, the old school still looks about the same. Except for the new cafeteria. I haven't been over there (at the school) in a while so did not know they had built on! Let's see, our youngest finished 8th grade in 1994, hm, have I not seen that side of the school in all this time? Isn't there a picture of our class in the yearbook standing in the previous grassy space in the shape of '70?.....Yep, page 100, but I don't think the whole class is represented.

Thanks for the birthday greetings. and HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALDA! I'm still 56 for about half an hour though. Tonight I'm feeling my age, spent the day at Holiday World/Splashin' Safari with Lori, Trenton and Gabriel. Whew! am I tuckered out! But we had fun!

The 1954 Christmas photo of our family includes, from left: Gary holding yours truly, Bruce holding Billy Tim, Jane Ann, and Sara Beth. (Notice everyone wearing watches - I wonder if Santa Claus brought them. Will have to ask.) Our youngest sister Missy didn't come along until 1962.

The class of '68 K-1st grade pictures are great! Thanks for sharing them, Rich. Don't think I have seen Jeff's picture at that age. Am going to try to get a print made.
BY THE WAY - look at Elaine's dress in one of the photos. Is it not the same dress my sisters are wearing in the Christmas photo?!

Lu, I hadn't noticed the dresses. I guess there must have been a sale at the dime store or somewhere.

Been out of town for a few days and really enjoyed getting of the site and having all of these memories. Jeff this is kind of strange. When i read about Mrs. French giving you a paddling in 6th grade, I remember her doing the same to me in 5th grade. I went grades 1 2 and I think 3 or at least part of three at West Side. Then went 4th and 5th to Edwardsport and Vigo which was the same school which later was our North Knox. Mrs. French was my teacher in 5th grade at Vigo. I remember 3 of us getting the paddle but not sure who else it was.

On that street by the Police station down a couple of doors, Mr.Hanson had a barber shop. He was a very old man that lived by Debbie Stremming (I think) But my Step Dads brother was married to his daughter so we had a bit of a connection and he always let me stop and get a sucker when i was in the neighborhood.

Does anyone remember that house on the other side of the wooded area by the West Side School? I guess the front of the house would've been on 4th street (the street that Sharon and Karen and Brenda lived on) I believe her name was Horn and for some reason I remember always thinking she was a witch. Does anyone remember that one? Or was that just me? I always had quite a vivid imagination!!!!!!!!!!!

One story that I remember about The Kroger grocery store. There was a game show at the time where I think 3 people would race through a store loading up carts with merchandise and whoever's total was the biggest won. The kroger store sponsored one of these with only 1 winner. You can only imagine how many entered and the person that won was Shirley Hagens Mother Gertrude. Don't ask me how I remember that but I was there when she was running throught the store loading her cart.

Leslie - I do remember the old house and woman on 4th street. My grandma and grandpa lived on west 3rd and when I would go walking and walk past that house I was curious but also scared of that old lady. Yes, she reminded you of an old witch. I told my grandma that and she told me that she knew her and she was a nice lady. No family and lonely, so from that time on I tried to remember that and not be so scared when I walked by!

OK, my Grandparents lived at 422 W. 4th Street. Just where was this house from them. There was an old house right across the street that used to scare me, but I am not sure who lived there. I will post a google earth photo to see if you can tell me which house you are talking about.

Rich, I never was good with directions, but I'm thinking that house was directly across the street from Sara and John Anderson's house. Did you ever play with John Andrson when you were visiting your grandparents? It's strange the things we remember from our younger years. Pam and I were having a conversation the other day remembering going to Threlkelds grocery (I believe it was on 3rd street near Mrs. Eastons house.) But we were remembering our favorite penny candy from there. Guess we were lucky that we grew up when you could get penny candy for a penny. My favorite was a sweet red candy that came in a gold tin foil wrapper. I use to pretend like it was lipstick. Then there was the little miniature ice cream cones filled with white sticky filling that reseambled an ice cream cone. I also loved those parafin bottles that were filled with different flavors. yummy

Yes, my Grandparents were the in the same block as the Andersons I believe. There was Mrs. Wright next door and someone named Corky where 4th street takes a 45 degree bend. That is about all I can remember. The link to the photo is two above this one.

Jean Ann Gilmore (Ruppel)

Anyone hear of a reunion at the Rod & Gun Club in September that is open to all North Knox High School graduates? Bob Kohlhouse called my sister - Carol Gilmore - and told her about it. Some of it is for Class of '68. But, some of the event is for all graduates. I can't find out any information of who is putting it on and if other graduates are really invited.

08/10/09 11:41 AM #1219

Bob called my parents to ask for Elaine's address. I am not sure if it is open to all graduates or not. Time is clicking away for our class to get something going for our 40th. I hope someone will step forward if you have the time. This site is capable of handling a reunion as far as money and reservations, etc.

Dan Roark

There has been a NK reunion at Rod & Gun for approximately 4-5 years now - it is for ALL NK graduates. Bob also called my house getting phone # for my brother. The class of 68 are getting together at Cabello's (local restaurant in Bicknell) then going to Rod & Gun. I THINK the date will be 9/26 if that is homecoming weekend. They have also had, on the Saturday morning after homecoming football game, a golf scramble at Bicknell Elks. If any fellow graduates would be interested in having a "70" foursome let me know. Dick if I get a flyer I'll scan/send to you.

Congratulations Grandpa Pat. Enjoy, Enjoy, nothing quite like spoiling them rotten then sending them home:) As I type we are waiting patiently for baby news from my niece Janet.

Happy belated birthday wishes to Lu & Alda. (have been off the computer a few days) Lu, I could actually name all the siblings in picture without help!!

CONGRATULATIONS GRANDPA AND GRANDMA GRABBE! Has Collin got you wrapped around his little pinky yet? Give us details - ht., wt., hair? Post a picture too!

Jeff got a call about his '68 class reunion, too. Bob Kolhouse said it is to be Sept. 12, going maybe to Cabello's then Rod & Gun Club. They're not sure about that 'cause Cabello's doesn't have much room if very many show up. (North Knox has an away game the night before, so I don't think this is connected to the alumni.)

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! :D
Congrats Ruth on identifying the Byrer bunch! We all look just the same, right? Ha! I added some pics of them on my profile (except Bruce).

Leslie, I remember Threlkeld's, it was close to West Side. Some candy was even 2 for a penny. I liked the pixie stix. Remember Riley's on Main between 8th & 9th? Bullock's on the "triangular" corner at 7th and Main? Mom used to let us take empty pop bottles to trade for cash to buy a little bitty bag of candy. What a treat that was! After my Grandma Byrer closed her ice cream shop downtown, she moved everything to her home on Bruceville Ave. and sold a few grocery items and ice cream from her enclosed front porch. She made the best lemon ice cream! That sounds pretty good right now, I'm a sucker for ice cream.

Hey Mike DeCoursey, I hear you are living in a garage. How's the construction going? Took the grandkids swimming at Jane Ann's yesterday. I didn't do the rope swing, but Janie did (and she's an official senior citizen - but don't try to tell her that).
