I'm sorry but another classmate has passed away.  Ralph Larson died Sunday, August 7.  Please see In Memory section for his obituary.  Ralph was the go-to-man for a new surfboard for many.

I'm sitting here thinking.....when did backpacks for school become common place?   I don't remember anyone with a back pack or a shoulder bag in high school.    Now, it's standard fare.    I'm trying to remember buying them for my kids and I can't put a date to it.    Maybe in the 90's sometime.

And I'm sitting here in my 18th year as an ISS teacher and the kids are getting worse.    We didn't need an ISS, we had Mr. Slade.      Our first month back to school is just now wrapping up and I've already processed over 60 discipline referrals - and my high school only has 285 kids!

In May, I retired after 34 years of teaching in public school. My first time to not have to sit through staff development and first day of school. Needless to say, I did not miss it. I do miss my long-time school friends and my students (kids with autism -- my joy). I know discipline and behavior issues seem to have gotten out of hand in public school.

My daughter chose  a Christian school in Huntsville for her first-grade daughter this year. The class prayed for rain last week and, low and behold, Huntsville got a good downpour Thursday evening. There are nine students in the class and my little grand daughter seems a lot happier and under less stress. Last year in public kindergarten, there were a lot of students with behavior issues and I hear some of the same students are acting out in first grade even worse. I have always been pro-public school but I am so thankful that parents today have more options. My daughter works for the public school district and went to public schools, also. But she knows now that she and her husband made the right choice for their child.

I am amazed to hear about so many discipline reports in such a short time of school. What will it be like in the spring? Dickey, at least they won't have to do away with your position anytime soon.

Please remember Janice Mangum Colwell and her family in your prayers.  Her older sister, Juanita "Nita" Mangum Lebeuf (Class of 1966) passed away on Sunday, August 28th.  If you will recall, the three Mangum sisters were Nita, Janice & Jackie.  God Bless the Magnum family at this special time. I attend Church with Janice & Jackie and they are very strong in their faith.  If you will recall, Janice was the one who suggested our Class Motto!

Hello BHS friends,
I have a prayer request...the wild fires in Texas are raging out of control.  I have two sisters in the Bastrop area and other family and friends who have lost their homes, animals and some businesses to the fires.  They desperately need rain...so Suzette, call your granddaughter and get her class on this!  Sounds like they have an inside connection to the Master Fireman.

Friends, please pray for these folks who are suffering...there are a lot of  uninsured losses.  They are all in shock and grief...the needs there are staggering.  Pray for the safety of the brave firefighters who are not sleeping as they fight these fires around the clock.   Please pray for God to break the horrible drought and bring a sweet, soaking rain to the Lone Star State.  Thanks everyone!
Gary

This was in Wednesday's Facts which I didn't read until Thursday night.  Sorry for the delay.  Please keep Kathy Harkreader Jones in your prayers for the loss of her much loved son, Jerrod.

Jerrod Wesley Jones

Jerrod Wesley Jones, son of Kathy and Jim Jones, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011, in a Houston hospital. He was 40 years old.

Jerrod lived the first 26 years of his life in Brazoria County, where he attended Brazosview School and Brazoswood High School.

He is survived by his parents; sister, Allison; brother, Josh and his wife, Julie; nephew, Evan; aunt, Charlene Harkreader; uncle, Andrzej Zamojski; and numerous cousins.

He is predeceased by grandparents, Maxine and Ray Harkreader and Opal and Lester Jones; uncle, Jim Harkreader; aunts, Tela Day and Karyn Neill Zamojski.

Jerrod's life was a gift ... one that could not be fully understood here on Earth, but which presented itself every day.

He lived with many challenges but his smile was beautiful and his eyes could express love far better than words.

His family will miss him greatly but they saw him safely home and they know some day they will be reunited.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate his life on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. at Lakewood Funeral Chapel on Dixie Drive in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Special thanks for many years of help goes to pediatrician Dr. Joel Vavich and to loving cousins Trisha Closs and Ricky Day who gave unselfishly of their time and efforts during his illness.

Yes Bill, forest fires are terrifying.   I have relatives in Bastrop that I haven't heard from yet.    We had a major forest fire up here in New Mexico this summer from lightning that struck just a half mile from my ranch.   The smoke jumpers landed in my field and it became a staging area.   I was afraid for a while but the winds thankfully, were not blowing in my direction and the fire consumed thousands of acres around me.     My place borders the National Forest and hunting season opens tomorrow.    New Mexico sold 77,000 hunting licenses this year - OMG, and the great majority of them will hunt in the National Forests.    I literally have to ride my fences in the afternoons to keep them off my place.   We pray that they don't start any fires.

Very Sorry to read the obit for George Kramig in today's Facts.    This was Kathy's dad and he was a real gentleman.    I worked with him on many historical ventures and he was a most exciting man to talk to.   I only wish that he had been my history teacher.  Kathy's mother as well was a real gem.   They will both be missed by me and the community.

Please keep Kathy and her family in your prayers.

OMG!  The loss of an institution on Friday.   We will surely miss Mr. Mac from our lives.   What a great and honorable man.   A man who had our respect and our love.    Please keep Laura and Lee and all their family in your prayers as they go through this transition.

I got in touch with the ex- Monchild member.  His group is booked up all the Saturdays in December.  He said they loved to play at reunion groups.  More leadtime was necessary.

Cindy & I will be there.  Let me know if there is something I can help with.
