Kitty Allison (Hilton)

OMGosh Judy, I've been haunted all these years by the memory of Mrs. Lovett erasing the equations from the chalkboard and with chalk dust on her hands eerily chanting, "I've got algeba all over my hands"! She was a trip with a serious passion for algebra. Remember her pronounciation of algeba?! BUT I LOVED and LOVE algebra! I make algebraic equations out of license plates while driving! It's sick, I know, and I have her to thank!

Dee Ann Trout (Glenn)

Mrs. Lovett freaked me out. I was scared to walk in her classroom because I might go down the wrong aisle...didn't she have "rose gardens"? And didn't someone stab one of her goldfish with a compass?

Kitty, I am impressed that you remember algebra and see it in license plates...I am doing good to remember my multiplication facts.

Joy, your dad's store had the best hamburgers in the world. Not many burger joints can compare.

The thing I remember is her sitting on the edge of her desk adjusting her bra constantly and making sure everyone sat up straight with their hands on their desk.

Collene Shoemaker (Lewis)

First let me say I was very shy in High School so not many of you will remember me. Those that do know I have a crazy, quirky side, am a loyal friend and think most people are good. Thanks Ray Beets for tagging me, I apologize for taking so long to respond.

1.Hi BHS’69ers…I’m not sure I remember all as well as most that post here… but I’m going to try, my gray matter is not quite as good as Dee’s or Michael Poehl’s and certainly nothing in comparison to Ray’s.

2.Glancing back to Clute Jr. Hi., do any of you remember sitting in the gym before school and singing along with the folk music played on the record player by Nelda Lamar? That was a very interesting time… the 60’s hmmmm.

3.Sleep overs at Marilyn Thomas’ house and her brothers playing tricks and trying to scare the poop out of us?

4.Imagine my surprise first period sophomore year sitting down next to a stranger also named Collene. Collene Broussard was one of my very best friends all through high school. Again imagine my surprise to find out she lives here in Austin where I moved after living 10 years in South Florida.

5.Summers at the beach dancing at the Sand Bar.

6.Surf Drive Inn, Pam didn’t you and Ralph work there?

7.Sweet Dobby Klepper, he took care of us at Mamie’s house when we did sleep over’s with Pam.

8.Dancing at the Asylum at the old Fire Sale… or was it just a bad dream I had?

9.Does ANYone remember the Tropicana Club…?

10.Dances at the fairgrounds? Boy was that place hot unless you climbed the bleachers to the top and stand in front of the windows… do any of you remember the redheaded guy that did the gator? Remember, the dance they did writhing on the floor!!! And our kids thought they invented break dancing.

11.I just read Glynn Irby’s #16, Glynn you must have been one of the privileged kids, my class walked hand in hand all the way down Marion St. to TW Ogg.

12.I have one wonderful son, Jim. I always wanted more children and he’s given me 3 beautiful granddaughters, Hayley-13, Kora-8 (named for me with a slight variation) and the holy terror, Larkyn-almost 3…. The girls call me Mimi and of course, I love it.

13.Mr. Shaw was fortunate enough to have me for not only Jr. English but Sr. English as well. When he saw me first day of our senior year he shook his head and said, ‘Miss Shoemaker, you are the most incorrigible young woman’…to that I said ‘thank you’, I had to look up the word to find out it wasn’t a compliment… perhaps that’s why he made the comment?!?!

14.Bonfire ’69… I can barely remember the collection of a roof from some old structure on FM 523 in Oyster Creek… somehow we got it on the bed of my old ’48 Ford P/U (that had no horn, thanks Clay Claiborne) drove it over the Velasco bridge to the school… I was sweating bullets!!!

Well that’s half way… more to come! So I tag Collene Broussard, Clay Claiborne, Jerry Tarkington, Claudette Coppin and my cuz, Nancy Carrier.

I'm looking forward to seeing all my old friends and trading memories.

Kathy Harkreader (Jones)

Hey Colleen! Of course people remember you, silly! You don't get away from this class that easily. :)
Jerry Tarkington was my buddy in journalism class, but regretfully, he is on the list of the deceased. I had a nice telephone conversation w/ him, I think in 1994.

Y'all...I feel sort of stupid about the whole am I coming or am I not...I know I posted on my profile that I was and I do hope to, but it is only April, so. When emailing someone,... I (sometimes) felt compelled to give a full (or partial) disclosure of the facts...that I don't know yet if I can come...guess I should have kept it all to myself. I want to very badly...you all are such nuts, it would be a shame to miss it. No telling what is going to take place there. Everyone has said so many nice things about me...don't know what I have done to deserve that...the truth is, I'm just as mean as the rest of you! :)

Sam, can you provide proof of the weight of that deer? Tony gave a different number, you know.

Glynn Irby

Collene,
The difference in detail of our collective fifty-two-year-ago memories could be that you and Nancy and several others that lived relatively close to T. W. Ogg may have walked to school on that first morning, while those that normally rode the bus from further away were first taken to the old school, then to the new one. And now that I’m actually thinking about it, some of the older students on the same bus did not go to T. W. Ogg at all, but rather stayed at the downtown Junior High, which would then account for the two-stage busing that I seem to remember. Maybe we can get fellow bus-riders Ray Beets, Ted Brouddus, or one-year-older Randy Wilkins to help us remember the details.

Sam Sutherland (Sutherland)

No, Kathy, I'm not ignoring this forum. Coming up with those 25 things pretty much exhausted my supply of words, and I had to wait for a new shipment to come in. Now that security is so much tighter, I've sometimes resorted to smuggling them in inside of hollowed-out books.

Colleen:
It is so good to hear from you. I am looking forward to your 15 through 25.

Glynn:
I’m sorry, I will not be able to referee between your and Colleen’s memory of that eventful day. I was one of the very few that stayed at Clute Elementary the whole year of first grade. For me, that was the day that several of the other classes full of kids disappeared from the playground. I did not transfer until Mrs. Ford's second grade class the next year. I felt like a stranger in a strange land for a few weeks that first month of second grade. I had not moved, but everyone at school had changed.

However, my experience with Mr. Williams is that he has a phenomenal memory. I remember taking my younger sister by his house after I was out of high school to visit his son. Mr. Williams called my sister, me and another guy that was with us by name even though he had not seen any of us since we were in 6th grade. He is an amazing guy. Maybe Becky Williams (his daughter) could help us out. Why has she not updated her profile? Any of you from Freeport or else wise been in touch with Becky recently?

Ray

Jd Barnett:

Oooohhh, you ladies mentioned Mrs. Lovett...all the bad chemicals flooded my brain...the Rose Garden, which was between the desks...don't walk there...Tiny drops of water and tiny grains of sand, make the mighty ocean, and the pleasant land...

Yodeling...yodelaheeehoooo, yodelahee...
Yodelaheeeehoooooooo, yodelahee...
Yodelaheeeheyyy, yodelayheeeeho, yodelayhee, olahee, olahee, hooooo ooooohhhh...

Dead goldfish...Mrs. Lovett crying...Nightmares...my mind is warping...

They're coming to take me away.......

Fact: If you don't learn Algebra in Junior High, you can't learn any more math until you learn Algebra. I found that out the hard way when I hit college calculus.

OH MY GOODNESS, I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE ROSE GARDEN IN THE AISLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Alice D. Smith

Judy Teague (Crenshaw)

I can't believe you people didn't genuinely love the yodeling!!!

I remember her sending the boys outside so she could teach the girls to be more decent with their dresses.

I loved the way Danny Cappell could filabuster(sp) classes at the drop of a hat. We got out of many quizes with that. Thanks, Danny.

Yes, Joy, I would love to take you up on any beauty treatments, hints, advice, etc!! I take what I can get! You know working with kindergarteners and 1st graders, they can be brutally honest. example, "Hey, what are all those tiny little lines on your chin?" (answer: WRINKLES)
I can't lie, that one was said by my own son at 5yrs. to his Sunday School teacher. I was so embarrassed.

Joy, do you remember kindergarten in Mrs. Sampson's class. I think you cried for weeks. I just knew you were going to fail kindergarten if you didn't hush!
I was way too serious at that age. I hope someone can get in touch with Rebecca Rush and Carla Sanders.

Coleen I remember you also. You were always so sweet.

04/19/09 09:16 PM #397

Dee Ann Trout (Glenn)

I remember Mrs. Sampson's kindergarten class. I loved stinging those little wooden beads and napping on the cots. At recess I would go out and sit on the curb and talk to my best friend Lou Willbanks. She lived across the street from
the Baptist Church. My kindergarten loves were Bruce Reed and Sonnie Knox. However, I don't remember Joy crying.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Karla Sanders posted her profile yesterday with lots of comments. Haven't heard from Becky Rush yet.
Mrs. Lovett sounds like she needed medication in large quantities! Maybe by I.V.s
=======================================================
MRS. LOVETT WAS SOMETHING. SHE WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL TEACHERS I EVER HAD. One thing for sure...you were NEVER BORED in her class. She always entertained us. Not sure any of us learned much algebra, but we were entertained. ;-) Alice

Judy Henson (Wolf)

Hey Carrol, Mrs. Lovett had a daughter that taught at Freeport. It is my understanding she would tie the boys in their chairs. She lived up the street from me,not far from Gerry Sue. Gerry Sue,if you're on here, do you remember what her name was?

04/19/09 10:10 PM #400

Joy Garrett (Chessher)

Dee Ann...you remember the burgers at Daddy's downtown drug store?!!! We called them "Zula burgers!" Zula was so sweet, and she did make the best burgers in Brazoria County!!! Does anyone remember Miss Bell at Riverside Country Club!!! She loved all of the kids!!! I remember my Daddy giving me champagne for my 16th birthday, and I rolled down the steps of the Country Club!!!

Carol...we are not exaggerating about Mrs Lovett! Medication probably would have made her yodel more!!!

Collene...who could forget one of the sweetest girls in our class?! You remember seeing me at the grocery store by 2222?! You are so sweet, and I look forward to seeing you!

Judy Teague...I cannot believe it! You and Dee Ann were in my kindergarten class. Do you know why I was crying? Bruce Reed stepped on my braclet and ring my Mom and Daddy brought me from Mexico....squashed!!! I was hysterical, but wonderful Mrs. Sampson bought me a new ring, and took me into the hall to give it to me. She said she was so sorry! I was just a baby...turned 5 a few weeks before school started. Mrs Sampson was one of my favorite teachers, and I have never forgotten how sweet she was to me! Okay...facial tips... Judy purchase a Neutogena hand held exfoliator/massage at CVS. Be sure to get the larger white one not the pink one. Wrinkles are caused from layers of dead skin that build up over the years. Facial creams are useless unless you exfoliate. I recommend having facials at least once a month, or twice if possible. Also, when cleansing...cleanse two times in the morning, and two times at night. You can use a different cleanser for both cleansings. Dermalogica are excellent products and good for all skin types. You can use salt, baking powder, and a little oil like jojoba oil mixed together rub on your face pushing in and up to massage the muscles to stimulate which make the skin firmer. Just like your body working out the muscles tones. This is a good exfoliator Jojoba oil is the closest to sebum produced by the skin... Sun, alcohol, and cigarettes cause the most damage to the skin. Use the Neutrogena exfoliator about once or twice a week replacing the pad each time. Use it on your neck and declotae (chest area) Try my famous oatmeal and egg facial heated in the microwave for about a minute...(apply only warm!) It softens and firms the skin..stay on a program. Remove mixture with a wash rag. Also...steam towels for 15 minutes a week is beneficial to remove toxins that cause the collagen and elasticity to deterioate. You can heat them in the microwave, and lay across face leaving an opening to breathe. For anyone needing skin care tips...write me! I will bring my products with me for the spa party!!!!

Have a great week everyone!!!!!
JOY!!!!!!!!!!!!! :0)

PS for you golfers...did you hear about Brandon Todd shooting a hole in one two days in a row!!! Also, I know a pastor that hit 3 holes in one I think in one day...WestLake Bible Church pastor in Austin!!!! My Mom hit a hole in one before she passed away on the #1 hole at Riverside Country Club..
It is great chatting with ya'll!!!!!
***************************************************************** Brandon Todd? Did he graduate with us, too?

Judy...probably Mrs. Lovett terrorized her daughter like she did us!!! Poor girl was probably tied up and made to listen to her yodeling...Thank you GOD for Mammy and Mom!!!

IT'S TRUE. MRS. LOVETT LOVED TO YODEL AND SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS THE BEST AT IT. BUT HER BLUE HAIR IS WHAT I REMEMBER THE MOST. Alice Day Smith

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

OH,MY STARS! MRS. LOVETT WAS KITTY CHAMNESS' MOTHER? That explains A LOT! Kitty Chamness was a TERROR at Freeport Junior High. Mrs. Chamness was the ONLY TEACHER in the combined 24 years of required public education between myself & my brother that Ray Reneau EVER met for a parent-teacher conference. She threatened to tie Mike in a chair because he slouched at his desk. Ray explained to Mrs. Chamness how that would never, never happen and it didn't. I think my parents would have understood had a teacher threatened to tie me in a chair (and use duct tape) but NOT MIKE. Fortunately for me, arrangements were made for me to NEVER, EVER be in her class because . . . well, it was just best for everyone.

04/20/09 08:56 AM #406

Janice Mangum (Colwell)

I remember Mrs. Chamness at FJH. She actually did tie Allen Sanders into the chair for slouching. She also exiled him to sit under her desk for disrupting the class. While he sat under her desk, he put tacks on her chair. She noticed... :) My class won a party at her house (I don't remember what for...). She had a rope swing that would swing out over the slope and the creek that ran behind her house on Southern Oaks Drive in LJ. Several of us (and I don't remember who..) decided to see how many kids we could get on the swing without falling off. The rope broke at about 3 and we fell onto the slope, luckily not in the creek! She was not very happy....

Judy Henson (Wolf)

Carrol, that's her. Yes, she had a good teacher.

Alice, do you remember her catching us in the hall together and giving us a lecture about having to go to the bathroom together? She also brought up our older siblings not behaving like we did if I remember correctly. She was something else!
=====================================================
OH YES. HER HALL LECTURES WERE MEMORABLE! Alice

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Somebody tell me - I'm not the only one running out TODAY and buying the Neutrogena exfoliator (the larger white one,not the pink one) like Joy recommended! I have a drawer full of magic that I never, ever use but . . . I am a good consumer.

04/20/09 12:12 PM #409

Cyndie Chrystal (Williams)

Carrol -
Of course you aren't the only one. I also got a dozen free range chicken eggs last night from my friend who raises chickens, and I've purchased a pound of oatmeal!! Don't flatter yourself - you aren't getting ahead of the rest of us! Now, I've got to figure out what Jojoba oil is and where to get it. Joy!!??
Cyndie

04/20/09 12:48 PM #410

Kathy Harkreader (Jones)

You get jojoba oil at the health food store.
I am also going to get the exfoliator today. :) I have one already but it is the wrong one...and it is old.

04/20/09 01:19 PM #411

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

oooooh, FREE RANGE eggs, that's probably wonderful for facials. What a great idea! Good thinking, Cyndie! So, probably not instant oatmeal, huh? I gotta go to the grocery store. Carrol

WARNING GUYS: Was it Glenn Mallory that made the crack about women & plucking chin hairs? Y'all might want to tread very, very carefully here. I'm just saying. . . Strickland, it would probably be best if you just stay mute for awhile.
