Joe, you don't know me, but I wanted to say that your Dad was a real saint. Bless his heart, he put up with so much foolishness for so many years! I took Government from him in Summer School. I remember one morning Brenda Brock brought a big paper bag full of frogs and sat in the back of the room. The class was in a temporary building. Every so often, Brenda would slowly reach into the bag and release one of those frogs onto the floor. He would begin his trip up to the front of the class and Mr. Ballard would see him and herd him to the door and kick him outside. The frequency got faster and faster until we had those silly frogs hopping all over the class. And you can imagine what happened to the sack. (Yuck!)

I was in Mr. Scarbrough's history class in 7th grade the day that President Kennedy died. Any of you in my class that day? When Mr. Scarbrough came in the door he looked like a ghost, and when he told us the president died, this giant of a coach (and hard spanker) wept like a baby. I will never forget it.

I was in the band hall at FJH. Lynda Maresh came running through the hall shrieking "President Kennedy has been shot!!!" It was such a dark hour for our country. Nothing on the TV except that horrible scene over and over, then the funeral, and his poor brave family. Terrible memories....

Any of you guys have my dad, Coach Gene (Willie) Day as your Health or PE teacher? Or even one of the other sports? The city and LJ Jr. High dedicated and named the football field after him. Our family was really touched, for most people didn't know that he and some of his first school boys cleared that field back in '48 so they could play football. Mom was there for the dedication service, but she died 3 years ago April 24th and never got to see the permanent marker that now stands at the entrance. That was sad, for she was really looking forward to viewing the marker. Alice

Alice I agree Dickie your profile is really cool I just want to comment on how much success radiates from the class of 69. I soo much appreciate the kind words about my dad here and on profiles. He passed on Dec 24th 1997 I have an 18 year old son who wants to be a professor. He reminds me of my dad with all the passion he has for teaching. He is very gulible but a son to be very proud of. We had some really good dedicated teachers and coaches. Alice your dad was great a good example for us boys growing up. I just can not read enough about what all have done and where they are today..You will know the tree by the fruit it bears.....Lots of good fruit here..says alot about the parents that raised us...Sorry for the emotional outburst but credit where credit is due

Joe, your words are touching....I feel sentimental today.

Alice,we all looked up to your dad as what we should be when we grew up to be men. I'll never forget that red baseball cap of his. He was one of the towering figures of our childhood.
======================================================
Jim, thank you for honoring my dad with such kind words. He loved his boys. When we would pray as a family, sometimes he would forget to pray for us, but he never forgot to pray for his boys at school.

I have dad's red ball cap, his paddle (with many of your names on it...), and his whistle. The most treasured of items. Alice

ALICE I HAD COACH DAY IN PE. DIDN'T HE ALSO DRIVE A BUS? SEEMS LIKE I REMEMBER HIM BEING MY BUS DRIVER.
MY DAD WAS PART NOMAD SO I MOVED AROUND A LOT. BUT WHEN I GOT TO HS I KNEW MORE PEOPLE THAN MOST HAVING ATTENDED AP BEUTEL, VELASCO ELEM AND 2 DIFFERENT STINTS AT JANE LONG, 1ST GRADE, THEN 5TH AND 6TH. I THINK WHEN I ATTENDED JANE LONG IN 1ST GRADE IT WAS CALLED WEST END ELEM. I HAD MRS WEBB. CAROLYN CROY WOULD KNOW. WE WERE IN FIRST GRADE TOGETHER. MIKE SEWARD AND I ALSO LIVED IN ALBUQUERQUE, NM, AT THE SAME TIME.
=====================================================
Yes, my dad drove a school bus. I always rode with him even though the school was only a 5 minute walk from our house. Alice

Kathy, Gail, Marian, Alice, Dee Allen, and Janice, your in here too,

OMG, this website is just great, jogging our memory minds is definitely worth making the trip to Freeport come August/September. No family in Freeport, but Houston is only a stone throw away and with 288 expanded, my gosh that 45 minute to an hour trip, now down to 30 to 45 minutes, really super…
Gail, I jumped the gun by not reading the forum before I tagged you, actually saw you were tagged 2 months ago or so, but I’m glad I did it anyway, since we do go back a few and some will be in this reading for you and all…
Kathy, Marian, and Alice, thanks for the onboard acknowledgements and yes Kathy, I can get that ticket…
Dee Allen, hey dude, your right, glad I’m living in Santee and not San Diego, though its greater SD, like Freeport is now, greater Houston. Apparently, most
of your time here was military too, darn “Grunt”, but I Love ya Man…Yep the Pacific Ocean doesn’t really please me either, do some fishing, but its not the Gulf, your totally right there…and it pleases me to tell ya, that on this Reunion weekend, both before and after, myself and brother Gary will be hitting the Gulf, San Luis Pass, and the bays…Another thing, the beaches just aren’t the
same either, most of the sand here is imported, and when they do dump some, it gets sucked back out into the Pac Ocean about that quick. Oh, sorry you missed the 71 Super Bowl too, that’s almost considered “Bad Luck”…
Okay, now for all, school memories and without a yearbook, lost mine long ago in a fire, hopefully able to recover someday, at least our 69 yearbook…OAFleming,
K, Mrs. Elkins, 1st, Mrs. Gilcrease, 2nd, ?, 3rd, Mrs. Tenant/Mr. Shiflett at Jones Creek, 4th, Mrs. Volkening, 5th, Mr. ? at JC, 6th, really gets messy now, JC for a
month, OAF for a couple of months, then off to Itasca, up north Hill County, south of Fort Worth and Dallas, for the next three years, thank God I returned to Freeport
to finish up Jr. High and continue on through with BHS, it was so good to be home. Departure was because Mom/Pop divorced, Mom remarried, got to come back. And Its still hard to remember BHS teachers without the book, but I do remember Mr. Joe Rogers who helped me get into Distributive Education (DE). Although, Mr. R, left in 67, his replacement, Mr. Walters did a super job too…and getting out of school at 12 was much better than 3:30, and going to work, making money at Selman’s clothing and shoe store, old downtown Freeport was an experience I needed. Just figured Freeport doesn’t look the same today as it did then…OMG, just remembered a couple more teachers, for History Mr. Senterfitt, did well in his class, but got a “D” in typing from Mrs. Senterfitt in B Jr. college, seeing I was the only male in her Class did not help and college sorta help me break out of being an introvert. Jobs for me, threw papers for the Facts, 9th/10th grade, inherited that job from Charlie Seidler,
tried the Showboat Theater over the summer, but needed a better job for DE, so Tra helped me get a job at, yep, Girouard’s Grocery Store, which was short lived, since I ended up slicing through me left leg with a box cutter opening toilet tissue of all things, really liked that job, but had to move on, when Selman’s came along. Kept that for our JR/SR year, then 7-11 on second street, right next to Raspberry’s, hopefully that brings out a lot of memories for all, yep Raspberry’s, and now its time for me to say “Hi” to Janice as well, seems boat races started our lives together through our parents…my gosh, it really has been a long time, since after 7-11 and October 70, I left Freeport again for the Navy, a new life, a new family, military retirement and a second career with the SDC Sheriff’s department, coming to an end June this year. Maybe now, I will truly retire, but 25 hours a week at Lowe’s, looking pretty good. Yes, life goes on…

Kathy, Lynn,

OMG, homesick, yes, embarrassed, yes too, Lynn, a long
lost country fan, that just didn't know, my gosh, your
songs and music written for others, are awesome, not only
listening to you here on this site, but ilike.com is
justice, a new number 1 fan, though fighting off our
classmates might be tough, thanks again, and their is
no music, but country music. I listen to KSON out here,
both locally and online...Kathy, that ticket is becoming
a lot easier, thanks too...

Marian Sahr (Bullard)

Hey guys, just spoke with Carolyn Croy and told her she needs to get on this site. She is married to Alan Spencer which is my sisters brother-in-law. Also, Linda Wales is my daughter's stepmother-in-law. I saw her at the hospital during Missy's surgery and asked her if she would be attending the reunion. She said no but I will work on her, too. I was telling Carolyn about all the old memories that are coming back from reading the message forum. I have been thinking about where I was when we heard about Kennedy and it was in the library. Unfortunately, my dad was killed at DOW only a few months before Kennedy and this was all too much to handle. I saw Tommy Carson at Alan's mothers funeral and he was telling me how he remembered my parties and that my parents wouldn't let him and several other guys in cause they suspected them of drinking. Um, wonder if that was true. I remember Becky Aucoin and I taking our dresses we were making from school to wear to a party, hoping the seams were sewed properly. WOW, at the memories flowing through my head. It's hard to believe someone 58 can still remember back that far. HAHA I hope you all have a great day!

Johnnie-
When did you live in Albuquerque? HL and I lived there in 1980-81. Our oldest son was born there in 81. Really liked living there.

Judy Teague (Crenshaw)

Yes, Alice I was in Scarborough's class that day. I remember Linda Milks in there but can't remember who else. I thought Michael P. in there but may be mistaken.

I didn't have your dad as a teacher but a bus driver. He was very sweet and calm. I know you miss him. I'm so glad he was honored.

04/28/09 04:34 PM #675

Judy Teague (Crenshaw)

Joe,
I'm sorry to hear about your dad passing. He was a sweet, calm man. I want to apologize for the antics that my brother pulled on him. He drove the bus that my sister and brother rode to BHS.

All I can say is "forgive them, they know not what they do."

Love ya man!

Jacque Webster (Andrews)

Alice, I was another member of Mr. Scarbrough's class on that fateful day. It's funny how you remember where you were in those times that are so monumental. I also remember your mother. She was in my discussion group in BSF, and I so admired her because she kept up and participated even though she was much older than most of the class members. She always had something to add and taught the rest of us a lot about the Lord.
======================================================
Wow, Jacque, I didn't know my mother was in the same BSF class. She loved that class, and my mother looooooooooooooooooved the Bible, and read it faithfully everyday. I know the reason I love to teach the Bible today is because of her. I have a lot of her Sunday School lessons. Thank you for sharing such a sweet "nugget" for my memory box of life. Alice

Hi Jacque I read you profile and the fact you lost your first child ... we did too it was very very hard for us he died at 9 days old...Then God blessed us with Isaac "the promised child" thats a long but cool story. My second son Jacob is mildly autistic and is truly a gift from God.. We are all so blessed

04/28/09 05:58 PM #681

Jacque Webster (Andrews)

Hi Joe! Actually, we lost our third child. Jason, our oldest was born healthy and strong. Then we had twin girls prematurely and the youngest died from undeveloped lung problems. Thank God and medical science that they've come a long way in that area. Good to hear from you!

Just got this in an e-mail and thought I would share.

Perks of reaching 50 or being over 60 and heading toward 70!

1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
2. In a hostage situatio you are likely to be released first.
3. No one expects you to run--anywhere...
4. People call at 9pm and ask, did I wake you?
5. People on longer view you as a hypochondriac.
6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
7. Things you buy now won't wear out.
8. You can eat supper at 4 pm.
9. You can live without sex but not your glasses.
10. You get into heated arguments about pension plans.
11. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
12. You no quit trying to hold your stomach in no matter who walks into the room
13. You sing along with elevator music.
14. Your eyes won't get much worse.
15. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.
16. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national weather service.
17. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.
18. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to a manageable size.
19. You can't remember who sent you this list.

This was sent in Big Print

And Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

I can't figure out how to get rid of the edit delete part when I send

Ms. O'Brien was a real trip. It was tough the next year when we got a real teacher and she expected us to know some
French.
