Since everyone is reminiscing about Elem & Jr Hi, I went to West End in 1st, Miss Webb I believe. Left when my dad was layed off from Dow and came back for 4th, 5th Mrs. Coffey & 6th I think was Mrs. McKnight. I had Mr. Bohuslav for Math, best teacher I ever had, Miss Cain for Spanish and I was headed to Mr. Cunningham's shop class 5th period when I heard abot JFK.

Alice D... really neat about the field at LJJH being dedicated to honor your Dad - a wonderful person.

Judy T - the day Kennedy was shot I remember Coach Scarborough coming in to tell us we would always remember this moment in our life - where we were, etc.
And again he was correct. I think we were still buzzing about that when we went to Mr. Huffman's math class, and got sent to Mr. Todd's office - then the entire school was dismissed if I remember correctly. But of course my mind could have been in a jumble after dodging another round of licks from Mr. Todd.

Hope we don't have to apologize for all of our misdeeds during our BHS days.... if so, then let's do a group confession, and realize we were not adults at that time in our lives. It is sort of like the bank robber who got arrested, and they asked why he would rob a bank with an armed guard in it ? and his response " at the time it seemed like a good idea ! " which is probably why we did a lot of stuff we did in high school.

Colleen, Julie, Joy, Margaret,
That French teacher was baaad! Joy, I was in that class w/ you. I said earlier that she sat in a very unladylike way but didn't want to come right out and say what you said. :) All I learned in there was la biblioteque for library.

Is anyone feeling a little nervous about the Swine Flu?

Hey Kevin! I liked Mr. Bohuslav, too. And I also had Mrs. Coffey the last half of 5th grade. I loved Mrs. Evans, too, whom I had the first half.

Joe, your dad was a great teacher. And btw, you can't get away from this class that easily...they'll hunt you down! :)

Michael, I'm in on the group confession. Can we sing a little Motown w/ it? :)

John S, I have been reading about a lot of the LJ people having paper routes. I was getting worried b/c I couldn't remember anyone having one in Freeport...I was thinking maybe we didn't have any newspapers over there. :) So glad you had one...I feel better now. :)

John A, I have too much to say to you about our twin nomadic dads to put it on here. You'll have to endure an entire email from me. :)

Marian, Carolyn Croy Spencer worked for my husband for awhile in the '80s. She had a nice family but I haven't seen them in years. I hope you're feeling better. I intend to write you a long email tomorrow.

Thanks Kathy you are too sweet..I remember as a kid having to go to Freeport for all our shopping..Weingartens where I worked for a short stretch as a stocker, Pennys, Grants, Sears...and I faintly remember that there was a hotel where the Grant store and shopping center was later built. Did anyone else ever go swimming at the old sulphur pits

Kathy: If there is anything I do really well it is procrastinating. I will get back to working on my "25" and get them in. I may have to do like I see some have done - enter them in short installments.

Gee, I am remembering so many of the teacher's names that are being brought up. For some reason, I can remember a lot more of them from 6th grade and back but not so many of the ones from 7th and forward. I always stood fairly strong with my spelling and handwriting in the elementary grades that it was a real shocker when I got to 7th and had to start putting words together for more than a one-page book report. I think I pretty much muddled through the rest of junior high and high school in a daze of just trying to make it through.

Reading all the stories of exploits so many of you participated in really reminds me how "out of sync" I was back in those days. With my dad, Richard Ludeman, being a shop teacher in Freeport and growing up next door to Mr. Slade (especially the Mr. Slade part) I never wanted to do anything to get myself in trouble. I remember being sent to Mr. Glenn's office one time with a group of other students. I don't remember which teacher it was but we were sent because he/she got exasperated that so many of us had not done and/or brought our homework to class with us that day. Mr. Glenn gave us a good lecture and I vowed never to grace his, or any other principal's, office again.

I secretly envied the students who seemed to have so much fun doing so much stuff, but I was glad to stay out of trouble. It used to just "kill" me when Mr. Slade would call out loud to me "Hello Miss Ludeman" in the halls, IN FRONT OF EVERYONE no less, at the high school. I must admit that, at the time anyway, I also did NOT envy girls the awfullness of winding up in the girl's bathroom crying because a boy had broken up with them. I was really backward - or something.

HEY KEVIN, WE HUNG AROUND TOGETHER FOR YEARS AND I NEVER REMEMBER US TALKING ABOUT BEING IN MRS WEBBS CLASS TOGETHER..OR THAT WE BOTH MOVED AWAY AND CAME BACK. I CAME BACK IN THE 5TH. THANKS FOR THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION ABOUT JANE LONG BEING WEST END WHEN WE WERE IN 1ST GRADE.
I REMEMBER THAT MRS WEBB HAD THE HABIT OF RAISING JUST ONE EYEBROW.....AND I'M PRETTY SURE WHEN SHE DID IT IT WAS USUALLY DIRECTED AT ME..........GO FIGURE!
I HAD MRS HITT (NEVER LIVED UP TO HER NAME) SHE WAS ACTUALLY REALLY SWEET AND PATIENT. THEN MISS BLACKBURN.
ANYONE REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE PE COACH AT JANE LONG THAT THOUGHT HE WAS GEORGE BLANDA?

Does anyone remember who the home economics teacher was at LJJH? I remember she was tall and had dark hair, I think. Back then, only girls could take home ec. and only boys could take any kind of shop class. I remember my dad coming home with stuff that I wish I could have taken classes for. I never would have done any good with greasy car stuff, though. Things are so very different now. My oldest son took a class in home economics!

I remember having Mr. Slaughter for German I. He was a bit strange and he always seemed to me to be lonely. I guess I felt I could identify and so I liked him. I loved German. Anyone remember the young, petite lady that started teaching German II the next year? My memory may be off but didn't she have very short, red hair and black rimmed glasses?

I had Mr. Scarborough for Texas history at LJJH. I remember him telling us stories and anecdotes about his ranch. And, yes, he was a big man. He looked like he should be teaching Texas history, though, didn't he?

I PUNCHED THE WRONG BUTTON BEFORE I WAS FINISHED. I WAS IN MR DAVIDSON'S CLASS WHEN JFK WAS SHOT, AND AS I RECALL, SOME OF THE STUDENTS ACTUALLY CHEERED. I NEVER REALLY LIKED JFK (I DID LIKE THE MOVIE) BUT REMEMBER IN THINKING AT THE TIME THAT NOBOBY DESERVED TO DIE THAT WAY AND CHEERING WAS ATROCIOUS.

HOW ABOUT TRUE CONFESSION TIME............TELLING ALL ABOUT THINGS YOU DID AT SCHOOL AND GOT AWAY WITH........AS LONG AS THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS ALLOWS IT...............I THINK WE ALL HAVE AT LEAST ONE DOOZY, RIGHT?

Barbara Ludeman (Frazier)

Anyone remember Mrs. Lovett and Algebra? There was "The Right Way, The Wrong Way, and the Lovett Way?" And the desks were arranged so as to be her "rose garden?" And you had better make sure you didn't cut between the desks to get to your own desk because you would be trampling her garden. And she just loved to give a "dry shampoo" to anyone who aggravated her, though I don't remember too many of those being needed. Oh, and her love of all clothes that were purple - with matching tops, skirts, purse, hat, & shoes.....

I never knew your dad, Joe. I'm not sure I knew he was your dad. I never knew your dad either, Alice, but I can be counted amoung those who remember his red hat. My dad passed away in May of 1996. I am very thankful that I do not know what it is like to lose a child. My heart goes out to those who do. And it is sad to miss a parent that we can no longer call on the phone or vist or just talk to.

I remember being in the library at LJJH the day Kennedy died. And I don't think I'll ever forget the TV covering nothing but the replay of everything leading up to the shooting and all the footage afterwards - and everything leading up to the funeral. I know in our house nothing else was on except that for the next four days! I don't remember anything else being on TV at all. Was there? Didn't they suspend advertising, too?

04/29/09 09:19 AM #698

Jd Barnett:

Barbara, I remember the teacher that took Slaughter's place but not her name. You're right, she was a little bitty thing and had red hair. She was very nice and hung around for several years after we left. I spent a lot of time in Europe and became fluent in German and went back to see her. We went on a "date" and walked out on the jetties, but it didn't go any further than that.

Darn.

I was in Mrs. Cain's English class at Clute Jr. Hi the day Kennedy was shot. I remember being in the choir room
later and everybody just sitting around on the risers. I remember quite vividly watching the funeral procession on TV at home-school was closed for that day.

Nancy –

In 1986, I was teaching 7th and 8th graders at Angleton Middle School. During one of our discussions, I mentioned that there would be certain events that would be so memorable that it would make a lasting impression on everyone. As an example, I said, “Think back, I bet you can tell me where you were and what you were doing when you heard that JFK had been shot.” I was wondering why everyone had a puzzled look on their faces when one of the students asked when Kennedy was shot. I said, “November of 1963” and was promptly informed that none of the kids were born yet.

You might be getting old if - - -

You remember when the Surfside bridge was built, both times.

You used to sneak into the Surf Drive-In in the trunk of a car.

You can still taste the bar-b-que sandwiches from Bodiddle’s.

Elvis is still the King.

You complain about loud music without considering music at the Dairy Bar that could be heard a mile down the beach.

You think motorcycles are dangerous.

You have to explain to your kids what an 8 track tape is.

You still have a VCR and it is flashing “12:00”.

You are the only guy in line at the convenience store who doesn’t get carded when you check out with one “lite” beer. What ever happened to Pearl and Jax?

You once bought colored Easter chicks at Wiengarten’s.

A thrill, in your Jr. High years, was sliding down the fire escape of the main building between classes.

Your bruises, from Mr. Sandlin’s licks, have finally healed.

The first thing you say in the morning is “Ouch”.

You wished you had Debbie Hanson’s Camaro now.

The sponsors of your High School yearbook have all gone out of business.

All of the schools you attended have been torn down and replaced.

You have a closet full of perfectly good clothes that you keep because you swear that some day they will fit again.

You remember where you were and what you were doing when JFK was assassinated.

You didn’t eat your first Pizza until you went to college.

You had to drive through downtown Houston because there was no loop 610. All the lights were timed so that you didn’t have to stop, all the way across town, so long as you didn’t exceed 30 mph.

You attended a Houston Buff or Colt .45 baseball game.

You went from Velasco to Freeport (or visa versa) across the swing bridge because it was the only one.

You ever lived in a town called Velasco, Texas. Go Seagulls ! ! !

You remember that, after a torrential downpour, LJJr.H watered the field in hopes of beating FJr.H in a football game, and still didn’t win.

You wrote “KILT” on several thousand pieces of paper only to have Mr. Weber say that there would be no dance (hosted by the new morning DJs, Hudson and Harrigan) after winning a contest for writing “KILT” on several thousand pieces of paper.

You can remember Brazosport before Clute was the “Hub of Brazosport”.

Your friends talked about their fear of the “Blob” because it was a creature from outer space that devoured every living being in sight and not because it was that thing that is now hanging around their waist.

and

You ever laughed because your teacher looked ridiculous under her desk during a duck and cover drill. Note: For some reason, year after year, my desk was always next to the teacher’s desk with me sitting with my back to the rest of the class.

I’m sure that there are more “signs” that you are getting old.

You talk a lot about what you remember because you are glad you still can.

Johnny and Kevin, I believe the boys' PE teacher was Mr. Lewis. The girls had Patsy O'Shea. I had Mrs. Webb in the first grade at Jane Long, too. I still have our class picture, but it was damaged by Hurricane Carla and a few faces are messed up, and I can't bring myself to part with it. Do you guys remember Tudor Wilson? He is in another class picture (Mrs. Hardin's Kindergarten class). I think he went on to Junior High at FJH, and he was really good friends with Allen Sanders, another name from the past, but I don't know what happened to either one of them.
Winona, wasn't Vanessa Twombly (also in the picture) your cousin or something? She was always a really dainty little thing. BTW - Laura McDonald is also in that Kindergarten picture!

Dee: Two things I do remember. Bodiddle's for sure. My dad stopped by there every night on his way home from work to get a beer. I had an Uncle that had the cigarette vending machine routes and I used to go with him all the time into all the bars around Freeport and the beach and watch him count the change. He was the fastest change counter you ever saw. Of course, Lake Jackson didn't have bars back then.

You also reminded me of the contest (I forget what it was for) when we had to come up with all those pieces of paper. I remember that Tommy Parker got his dad who was a computer geek at Dow to bring home boxes of punch cards so we could fill them out. Remember punch cards for computers?

I also remember taking typing on manual machines at B'port and I remember when they got their first "Electronic" adding machine instead of those ones you had to pull the handle down on.

Dee:
I laughed out loud and identified with many of your "signs of old." You're still a witty guy after all these years--hope you stay that way forever.

Winona Hebert (Spinks)

Janice:
I didn't know Vanessa Twombly but she's probably related to the Twombly family that my Mom and Dad worked for at Avalon Construction--he owned all those duplexes/4-plexes down by the old Weingartens.

I've also updated my profile to show the aging process. I've looked at some of our member's current pictures and absolutely don't see any resemblance.

What I fear most is going to the reunion and having someone come up and say: "Hello, I'm so and so and me going....NO WAY!" What happened? Well, it was 40 years of.....

My point, is that I wish more members would try to post some in between photos so we can see the progression.

Not to worry friend. We will have LARGE high school class pictures with LARGE first names (no need for glasses to read)so we will recognize one another@*&%$#@!(*&^%$#@!...At least that is the plan. Alice

And for pete's sake don't ask Dee about the weather. Criminy, he can ramble on and on about that.

The current weather system, that is effecting north and central Texas, moved into the Pacific northwest last Thursday. Now, fueled by warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, it has unloaded several inches of much needed rain throughout Texas. Lake levels, which have suffered in recent months, will benefit from this welcomed percipitation.

I rest my case.
