Joe, I didn't swim at the sulfur pits (?) but I did swim a lot at the Dow Hotel. Was that the hotel you were talking about? In maybe 7th and 8th grades, we would walk down there (about 2 miles), swim all day and then walk home. I don't know how we ate lunch b/c it was too expensive to eat in the restaurant there. We would buy a yearly membership and get unlimited swimming. Sometimes we swam at Cappy Muchowich's pool...I think w/ Leland Henderson ('70 class). This probably included Cathy Ellis, or Cheryl Lewellen or Sherry Cade...whoever could go. :)
I was the last kid at home and my mother worked outside the home so it was no fun to stay at home by myself. Debbye West and I would go a lot to the Freeport Rec Center where we would dance (if we could make someone dance w/ us) and I think play ping pong. Then I started to drive. :)
What was it like to swim at the sulfur pits?

Janice, Winona and Johnny A--I remember Tudor Wilson (was "Tudor" actually his name?) and Allen Sanders. I think I saw them in your class picture, Janice. Do you remember Mike Coker? He was in there, also. Do you remember how the steam tables used to come around to our rooms for lunch at Jane Long? I thought the lunches were pretty good.

Dickie, I wouldn't be able to recognize others b/c I can't even recognize myself! I do remember Bodiddles!

Nancy and Dee, those were great lists. :)

Hi Jacque out there in Aggieland! :) My Jim said to say hello to your Jim.

Julie, about the talent contest--Glynn Irby could do a poetry reading. Johnny Adcock won a dance contest once...he could dance for us...if he wouldn't throw his back out. (What does that mean, anyway--to throw your back out...)

Cyndie Chrystal, where are you?

Julie Davidson (Sabrsula)

Kathy, what great suggestions for the talent show. Since Melinda McBride Haviland hasn't declined participating we can assume she will still sing for everyone. This is shaping up nicely. "Throw your back out" is a phrase with unknown meaning like the phrase the "record that will follow you your whole life" as Betty Beck pointed out. We will wait and see what Cyndie Chrystal William's input is for the talent show.
And....I want to know why the Lake Jackson kids didn't get to have a junior high graduation like the Freeport kids had. How about the Clute kids? Did they have a graduation?

Kathy, I do remember the steam tables coming to each room, the green lunch tickets that you bought a week at a time, milk tokens and those big rectangular plastic lunch trays in pastel green, blue, and pink! The food was good. I really liked the peach cobbler, especially when they gave you extra crust! (yum) I remember that if you cleaned your plate, you could get a serving of red beans. They were good, too. I remember taking the class's lunch order and money down to the kitchen and seeing all of the lunch ladies sitting around a counter or table sorting the beans. Also, in kindergarten and maybe first grade after lunch (we went from 8 to 2:30) we would get out our cots and take a nap. Then a tray of cookies and milk would magically appear outside the door. They had great cookies, especially peanut butter!

Hey Barbara: Was the home ec. teacher Ms. Whittenaben?? Or there was also Cecelia Baker. I just remember we had a lady come talk to us from HL&P and she made the most awesome kneaded fudge. I still have the recipe but can't figure out how to make it. I didn't write down the directions, just the ingredients. Guess I thought I might remember them. Ha- I can hardly remember my name anymore---
Didn't you live on Southern Oaks Drive also??
I enjoy reading everyone's stuff-I'm trying to rack my poor brain to remember the good ole days. I think between kids and grandkids I have tried to block out all the stupid stuff I did growing up.
Glenn and I don't have a computer at home to which our kids think we are the only one's in Brazoria County without one so I am trying to get online here at work when I can. Ya'll keep up the chatter, I love it-hope to see everyone at the reunion.

What !! Ya'll had a graduation!

Dickie Tracy

Yes, there was a Cecilia Baker. It was her first or second year at BHS in 69. She moved over to B'wood and taught there until about 1998 or so. She had the cooking classes there also. They don't call it Home Ec anymore.

Gerry Sue: When did you quit going by the double name? You know I was in college before I found out my real name was Donald. I've never gone by Dickie since. Only close family get to call me Dickie anymore. And of course you guys who don't know otherwise. Shoot, I don't even think Kim Kincannon (my neighbor for 18 years) knew my name was Don!

Yes-LJ had a Jr High graduation. It was at BHS, I think.
I remember the white dress and getting my hair done for it. Judy Henson had a graduation party at her house on
Southern Oaks Dr.

Well, it certainly made a big impression on me! NOT. That is one memory I just don't remember.

Susie (Gerry Sue) Reichenbach (Tyler)

Dickie: I worked with my mom starting in 1975 and she always called me Susie- only the full name when I was in BIG trouble, so I kinda changed and started using that. I'm like you that all the folks I went to school with still call me Gerry Sue and I will answer to that- even Glenn (Husband) calls me that sometimes when he's trying to get my attention!!
I'm having a blast reading all the stuff, especially the list Dee has, I loved Bodiddles, I have a check my Dad wrote to them from way way way back when-- I remember a bunch of the stuff on the list-
This is great to hear from everyone--
Can't wait to see everyone, I know we talked about name badges with BIG names and the old pictures so we would be able to know who we were seeing!!

I remember the steam tables at Roberts Elem. I moved down here from Pasadena in 5th grade and had previously gone to St. Pius Catholic school in Pasadena where we had to take lunch from home. I thought the hot lunches were awesome, except that I was an extremely picky eater, so I hardly ever got the pinto beans.

Did you get any kind of "diploma" or anything. you know my mother was one of those that kept everything....and I don't recall running across that. I got report cards going back to first grade but I've never seen anything on that.

After my parents died, it took me literally an entire year to go through the large upstairs attic at their house sifting through all the keepsakes.

Margaret: I don't remember the party at Judy's but I lived down the street so maybe I was invited!! Gosh I hate loosing so many brain cells--

04/29/09 04:03 PM #727

Susie (Gerry Sue) Reichenbach (Tyler)

Margaret: Well it would help if I could spell and type at the same time- I meant maybe I wasn't invited to Judy's party-
See there go the brain cells-----

Joe -

I didn't know you were in Cleburne. I'm in Fort Worth. I say we meet at Winnona's for supper sometime. That is, if you want to eat crawfish or roasted possum. On second thought, maybe we could get Winnona to buy us supper at Babe's Fried Chicken in Burleson.

Susie-there's a lot that I don't remember, but a few things have stuck. Maybe I remember the party because I was "going with" Gerald Durflinger at the time and we went to the party together, he hardly ever got to go anywhere, so maybe that's why it stuck in my pea brain!

04/29/09 04:15 PM #730

Susie (Gerry Sue) Reichenbach (Tyler)

Margaret: Gerald's sister in law was working for me until recently. He is living in Angleton so I'll check and see if he ever signed up. His mother still lives in that house on Southern Oaks Drive. I think she is about to put it up for sale. My mom died in 2007 so we sold her house. I may have gone to the party but just don't remember. Boy its fun to try to remember the days gone by-

I was in Mrs. Crain's English Class at Clute when JFK was shot. I think it was sometimes around January Claudette Coppin sent an e-mail asking us where we were that day. She and Joe had watched JFK movie and sent out the question. Got us to thinking about way back when.

Dee:
Funny you should mention opossums. We've had quite an adventure with some lately. While I was on the coast for my Poppaw's funeral, we had torrential rains in Burleson. My daughter found 4 baby opossums on our porch apparently drowned when washed down the gutter. Two weeks later I heard "something" in the hall wall. The noise went away so I didn't think much more about it. BUT last Friday I opened the front hall closet and the SMELL almost knocked me down. I went up into the attic and looked down into the wall segments--imagine my surprise when two beady little eyes looked up at me. I had to cut a hole in the closet wall and pulled him out by the tail then released him in the front yard. I also found the source of the smell--that one wasn't so lucky. We left the front door open to draw the odor out and about an hour later I discovered ANOTHER soaking wet baby opossum on the welcome mat thinking about coming inside to get out of the rain. We've accounted for 7 so we hope that was all of them. I would have kept the two that survived if I'd known you were hungry for opossum stew.

I'll meet you at Babe's anytime--call next time you're in the area.
