I am in shock.  I have been sobbing for the past half hour, upon reading the terrible news that Carol died a month ago today.  I was planning to look on this website tonight  to see if she might be coming to the reunion, as we always sat together at the previous reunions.  At the last reunion in 2002, her sister was gravely ill with cancer, and she was so saddened about her impending death.  She was also immensely proud of her little boy, "Sparky"  whom she had late in life.  I don't remember her mentioning a daughter-- is it possible she gave birth to her after 2002?  This is so tragic for her husband and children.

I always admired Carol for her maturity and calm common sense.  Even when we were teenagers, she seemed like someone much older than her actual age.  I think we had that in common.  I am so sad that I did not know she had been ill, and did not have an opportunity to say goodbye.  She was a wonderful friend.

Anyone else out there who also is touched by Carol's passing, please contact Lou Ann (Stamps) Vidmar  at vidmar1@comcast.net.  Thank you.

  In Memory Of

Carol Stender-Larkin – Class of 1972

The four of us (Mary Quilling-Hickey, Mary Stoughton-Lee, Debbie Hose-Doughty, and Carol) had our own reunion in New York City at the end of 2009 – to celebrate turning “55” by dispersing confetti on New Year’s Eve in Times Square with Treb Heining!  Although we hadn’t always kept in real close touch with one another over the years, we immediately fell back to our close friendships we had growing up together (all 5 of us). We had the best time together in NYC, and we can thank Carol for bringing us back together, for showing us all over NYC, and giving us a very special memory that we will long remember.  Little did we know that we would lose our life-long friend just 4 months later to cancer.   In high school, Carol always set her goals high and accomplished much, including earning GGHS's highest honor - “Most Worthy Argonaut”.  She carried those traits with her throughout the years, in both her personal and professional life.  She received a Presidential recognition award for her work with the IRS, and she successfully balanced a demanding career with her husband and 2 children.  Her involvement in their lives and numerous activities - whether it be sports, academics, church, volunteer endeavors, or travels – was remarkable.  She lived life to the fullest and accomplished far more than most of us can ever hope to achieve in our lifetime – truly a “Most Worthy Argonaut”.  Carol, thank you and you will be missed.

Thank you for writing this tribute, Mary. I will be forever grateful to Carol for bringing us all together one last time. What a blessing it was to renew our friendships, reminisce about old times, and best of all, to make new memories. What a privilege to have known her and call her friend.
