Funeral services for longtime Garden Grove boys basketball coach Dewey Van Cleave will be at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Orange on May 9 at 1 p.m (2019)

Van Cleave, 87, died April 23 of pulmonary fibrosis. He passed away at his home with his son Rusty and daughter Mitzi bedside. Van Cleave is survived by Rusty and Mitzi and two grandchildren.

Van Cleave was born in Lincoln, Neb. and attended Nebraska Wesleyan where he was a three-sport star. He is in the Nebraska Wesleyan athletics Hall of Fame.

His first head coaching job was in Nebraska as boys basketball head coach at Holmesville High. His Holmesville team qualified for the state tournament in 1960.

Van Cleave coached at Garden Grove for 32 years. He was the Argonauts boys basketball head coach for 13 years ending with the 1997-98 season. Van Cleave also coached girls basketball and track and field, and was at times the head coach of the varsity baseball team and freshman and junior varsity football teams.

Rusty Van Cleave was the Foothill boys basketball head coach for several years. Dewey was Foothill’s freshman boys basketball coach during those years.
