I loved Mr. Reed...he always was looking out for me to "save" me from myself! I guess he saw the wild side of me and wanted to make sure I stayed on the "straight and narrow". Well, Mr. Reed your job was well done, I turned out pretty good. Thanks for your love and devotion to your students! Penny

Over the years our paths crossed many times. After Mr. Reed left GGHS he became the superitendant of Hesperia School District. I had the pleasure of having him give high school diplomas to five of my children during the 10 years we lived in that area.

It is with sadness that I learn today of MR. Jay Reed's passing. I know I will see him again in heaven, as I know he walked and taught and lived the path of a true Christian. I knew Mr. Reed as I always called him, because he was also my Sunday School teacher at Garden Grove First Church of the Nazarene, where he ofetn met with my parents in conversations that had more than one impact on my life and shenanigans I like to play in those days of growing up. I was especially impacted on a difficult day in March, 18 March 1967 to be exact, when I was summoned out of Mr. Issac's World History class on The Assyrian Empire, in the midst of the guffaws and teasing of my classmates, having to go see Mr. Reed...Upon arriving in his office, I was informed that I was to await a call from my Grandmother Lillie, who had some important news for me. Upon her calling back, I was to learn that my cousin and wrestling buddy down through my youth, ten years my senior,now- a recently graduated US Marine aviator in F4 Phantoms deployed to South Vietnam, had been shot down, and was MIA--missing in combat. Mr. Reed tried to comfort me, and to assuage my grief and disbelief, and when I ran out of the door, and off campus, truant and cutting the rest of that day for my first cut ever...He overlooked and pardonned me--even though the rules were rigid and set by the school board...I tried to enlist that day, but it seemed that all the recruiters only knew and admonished me, that I had to finish High School--and since I was only sixteen, with a June birthdate, I was really young even for my classmates and year. That following Sunday, the word got out to my family what I had done, and Mr. Reed counselled all of us, and we spent all of the church time together in a back room where the whole family and Mr. Reed and his lovely wife shared in our loss and grief. I will never forget his kindness of that time and day, and it still makes me smile now, and sets the standard for kindness in my memories. In my life, I must pass that on--we truly are our brother's keeper.
