Your mentioned you recently drove down Luell near Jensen.  Wow, what memories that evoked.

My first office job was working for Ragan and Weaver Law Firm, located on Luell.

The nearby businesses that I remember:  Proske's 5 & 10 store, Luell Bowling Alley,

San Jacinto Savings and Loan, Post Office, a shoe store (can't remember the name).

My mother worked at the City of Houston health clinic where we got our shots.

Thanks for all of your contributions to the forum.

Happy New Year to all Sam grads.  What a great group.

My home room -English teacher told me what i needed to hear--"Jim-if you don't pick up your grades

you will never be able to go to college"  It worked--I will always be grateful she cared enough to tell me the

truth  and it's great to stay connected even tho i only remember a few friends--still wish i could find an annual

from first graduating class of new SH HI  -  Jim Carlin 1956

Happy New Year to all our SH classmates and hope everyone had a great Christmas.  I enjoy reading the posts every day even though I don't contribute much.  Interesting posts.  I especially liked the Luell St. post.  I started working at that Weingarten's just before I turned 13 sacking groceries, advanced to cashier a few years later and kept working weekends until 1962 when my husband, Eugene Parrish, came home from his stint in the Navy.  Lots of fond memories working there as a kid.

OH - the Weingarten's.  Remember the little colored chickens they had for sale at Easter time.  They were right by the front doors.

Ms. Scott, it is so very kind of you to respond.  This year has begun in a grand way, I must say!
Yes, you did make a great impact on many of us but I believe in a more significant way with us that were in need of tutelage.
And...it is a wonderful thing to have the opportunity to tell you thank you.
It means more to me than you will ever know to have this chance that we/I often overlook and it is exciting beyond measure!
I don't get back to Houston very often but if and when I do attend one of the luncheons, I will be sure to write and let you know.  May God bless you always, Paula
p.s. ...I'm clean as a clean whistle  hahahaaa  I know, right - no fun!  Seriously, I live a clean life and try to do by others as Jesus would have me to do so and so with a clean conscience, live a joyful life!

Would like to let everyone know that Teacher Gene Thompson went to be with The LORD yesterday. He and his wife were members of Spring Baptist Church, but had moved to San Antonio to be closer to family when his health had gotten bad. No funeral arrangements yet, but will be buried in San Antonio, military funeral. Will update as information is available. Keep Ms. Jan and family in your prayers. I met Gene and his wife when i joined Spring Baptist and through conversation found out he was a teacher at Sam Houston.

Caren #2879 ~ I did not know that Judy McKnight was his Mom or that she went to Sam. I knew he was from the Houston area but didn't know the close ties with Sam. We love watching Big Bang!

Roger Bradshaw #2881 ~ Class of 70 was a SUPER year you are correct. My sister Shirley Maxwell ws from the graduating class of 70! Happy New Year!

Linda #2883 ~ Luell was a bomming place back in the day. That whole area there was always a neat place to go to. I can remember a funny story about the Clinic where we got our shots. My mom had us 3 and a couple of neighborhood Mom's had there kid and one of our friends ~ Lana Davis jumped up and ran out the back doors when it was her turn for a shot. Mom's and nurses chasing her all over the parking lot ~ they caught her and my Mom held her down while she got her shot. Lana and I taked about it just the other day. She remembered Mom holding her so they could get her shots in her. Funny the things we remember.

Evelyn #2886 ~ Yes Weingartens was always a famly favorite My brother worked at the one on 59 and Jensen/Saunders. The East side of 59 by Dairy Queen and KFC the side Globe was on.

Nancy #2887 ~ I remember the baby colored chicks too. I still see baby chicks and ducks for sale at Tractor Supply but the chicks are not dyed.

Bobby # 2890 ~ R.I.P. Gene Thompson and prayers for his family. Thanks for letting us know.

I would also like to give my prayers for the family of Frank Hemby ! The Dad of Morris ~ Wanda ~ and Jamie Hemby who went to Sam. He passed away and will be laid to rest today.

Always tough when we loose loved ones but around the Holidays it makes it much harder. Prayers for all those that have loosed loved ones over the Holidays.

Judy

Hello Ms. Scott!    I did not have you as I was in Houstonettes, but I remember you and Janet Carr well.   All of my friends that had you loved you.   I see Janet Carr frequently.   She lives in Bentwater on Lake Conroe and is still as nice as ever.  So good to hear from our great teachers who made such a difference in our lives.  I remember a mother of one of my friends at Sam saying that all the good teachers went to Lamar and Bellaire. I was appalled at the time as i had cousins that went to Bellaire and Lamar and I knew that the education I was receiving was better.   I remember trying to discuss the role of the Supreme Court with them and they didn't have a clue.   Then when I went to college, my knowledge of math and literature tended to be above many of my fellow freshmen.   Thank you, Ms. Scott, for working so hard for so many students.

Happy New Year to all Sam High School members. Though it has been 50 years ago this August, I still have fond memories of Sam. I arrived there in '67 and left to be with Mr. Willbanks at Spring High School in '73. In '71 I met my wife who was computer clerk working for Dorthy Doreck at Sam. This year we celebrated our 45th anniversary.

I was wondering if anyone remembers who Binky Adams was and if she is online. She wrote me a note in the 1970 yearbook that read: "Mr H- Its been really great this last year. I hope you have more students like me & I hope not to have another teacher like you. I would quit school. If I fail I'll be back though so you better pass me. Stay like you are or change completely. Love always, Binky Adams sophs 1970 & Chipper"

My question is, Binky, did I pass you?????

Have a great trip Judy...have a safe one...it's 11° right now here at my house@ 7:04 in the AM on a Saturday.   they said wind chill made it feel loike -1°.  I can only remember one time it getting cold enough to snow in Houston.....I am thinking it was back in 'late 50's or early 60's ???   not sure..but they turned school out for the rest of the day because there were some seniors that had never seen snow.   it wasn't even sticking to the ground ...and it was disappearing at some point before it ever hit the ground.

I just saw a post on Facebook that I thought should be shared with our classmates since we are always talking about getting on in years.  Evidently many seniors are not aware that Senior Discounts are prevalent or are too embarrassed to ask.  I have reached that point that I frequently don't have to ask.  They notice that I'm older than dirt and automatically apply the discount as a courtesy.  I'm financially secure, but appreciate these savings as a way to be even more generous in gratuities and charities.  Here's hoping this list will be of similar benefit to you.  The Facebook post is as follows:

*************************************************************

As I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy's recently,I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and
charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that
seniors over age 55 ...get 10% off everything on the menu, every day. (But you need to ASK for your discount.)

Being of 'that' age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount too.
this incident prompted me to do some research, and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and howsome of them start at the young age of 50 .
This list may not only be useful for you, but for your friends and family too.

Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55 .
If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for FREE.

2902 Melmoy - Thanks for the senior update you posted. It's time for us to get the discounts we deserve for making it this long in life. It wasn't always easy but we didn't give up, we kept on pluggin'. Have a Great New Year.

Mel I'm in Houston Texas (born and raised) What A Burger gives senior free small coffee,no other discount, and the Super Cut I frequent does no senior discount either,I always ask if a business gives any discounts, including for my good looks ;-)...bottom line it doesnt hurt to ask, maybe our ego might be a little bruised but worthy of the possible savings.

Thanks Mel Moy, I will have to make me a card with the info. that I might use from time to time. The ones that are more common I hope I can remember . I hate driving to the east coast and when we decide to stop and get a room for a few hours and being asked to pay the full fare for so little time.
