#3302 Judy Maxwell:

Thank you for posting Lynton Ellisor's You Tube video of  Sam Houston High School's Alma Mater.  It is a beautiful rendition!  I'm wondering if there will be a piano in the building where we plan to have our 50th reunion?  If so; would any of the members of the Meistersingers, or Girl's Glee Club be interested in singing some of the songs we sang (and, of course, the Alma Mater)?  That is...if Lynton Ellisor would be willing to accompany us on the piano.

It's good to see the negative comments about our classmate & friend Freda Williams have been removed. Thank you to who ever is responsible for taking those off.

The Sam Houston band recorded an LP every year which included the concert band and/or the jazz band. I wonder if the Meistersingers ever recorded Black and Gold?

Hello Classmates,

i am sorry to hear about Freda's passing.  I remember her well as a nice person and a very loyal Houstonette.  RIP, Freda.

Fred:

I believe that I read in previous messages that the Meistersingers did recordings some years before I graduated, and the year after I graduated. I would think that they would include Black and Gold.

Meistersingers did cut an album in 1967 and it included "Black and Gold".   I have the album packed away in the garage with the rest of my LP's.

Bluet (Lane) Slatten (1956)

Lane Slatten (1956)  My old neighborhood (Woodsdale) Littleyork/Westfield has changed so much I have trouble recognizing much even on the street I lived on (Trenton Rd).  My sister still lives on the old homestead.  The North End of Houston was always a challenging place to live and grow up in but now it's like another country.  I have deep roots there and crave to go back now and then, or scan the area on GoogleEarth.  My memories are still intact, but memories are all that's left of the good ole days and surroundings I grew up with during my school days at Burbank Elementary, and Burbank Jr. High, and SHHS.  Having graduated 1956, our class was the first to graduate from the brand new SHHS campus.  It was a wonderful time in my life.  Although the people, buildings and roads have changed over the years, I think that area still is home to hard working people, looking to get ahead....just like my family did way back then.

Lane, that is sooo cool! That you were part of the first class at the "new" SHHS. How many kids were in your class? In 1956 I was in the 3rd grade at Coop Elementary, Parker Rd @ Aldine Westfield. Your right, the old north side area sure has changed. But then so have we, right? All living things keep changing so I suppose the North Side is still alive. Blessings Randy '67.

Louis, I came along a few years behind you at Burbank Elementary and had Mrs. Sicinski for 6th grade as well. She was one of the sweetest teachers I had at Burbank.

Eugene Knox (1972)

wow, Mrs. Sicinski had a nice long carreer at Burbank, eh?  I was happy to see a class photo, of my first grade teacher, Mrs. Wright at Roosevelt, in 1948, on this web site.  I had her in 1960/61.   So, i know she was there as early as '48, when my parents were high school seniors at Reagon High School.  Anyone else have Mrs. Wright at Roosevelt?

Mark (Keith) Davis (1974)

I had Mrs. Sicinski in 6th grade also at Burbank Elementary.  My brother, who is 16 years older than me, also had her for 6th grade.  Definitely a long career.  By the time I got to Sam Hosuton, I had her recently graduated daughter, Miss Sicinski for English.  I was a bit of a closs cutup and when I told her that I had her Mom for 6th grade, she said.."yeah, my Mom already warned me about you".  She was a fun teacher.

Diana Le Blanc Yes I think Mrs. Sicinski was one of my favorite teachers. I never thought to ask Frank who was in my class year if she was his mother.

I guess each school had its "special" teacher that everyone loved. At E. R. Coop elementary it was Mr. Woods "Woody." He was a sixth grade teacher in room 24 on the third wing. When I was in Woddy's class he was the only male teacher in the entire school. He was very strict and commanded respect. He carried a big stick but spoke softly and all the kids wanted to be in "Woody's" class.

I too had Mr Woods for 6th grade at Coop.  Great teacher and lots of fun.  I also had Mrs Robinette for 5th grade.

Tommy Rust (1966)

I had Woody for the sixth grade also. I was also fortunate to be one of the kids he took hiking along the San Jacinto river and to the YMCA to swim. He was also active in the Boy Scouts and I got to interact with him there. I think as teachers go he had the most influence on me. The fifties at Ethel R Coop elementary, those were the days.

I think we all have our favorite teachers at each school we attended.  I didn't start school in Houston but got here as soon as I could.  I do remember my 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Jones. She was sweet and gentle.  We came to Houston in the summer of 1952 and I started 5th grade at E. R. Coop in a class taught by a little chubby man.  I can't remember his name but he was not a very effective teacher.  He would tell jokes and then mark down your conduct if you laughed.  I had Mr. Woods in the  6th grade and he changed my mind about male teachers. I remember thinking he was the tallest man I had ever seen.  At Burbank, I had Mrs. Lattimore for English.  She was a strict, demanding woman but I learned a lot in her class.  I can still diagram a sentence after all these years. She saw potential in ever student and didn't hide her disappointment when a student didn't try.

Caren Reynolds (Cates) (1965)

Randy and Mary,

It is good to see other E.R.Coop alumni on this site.  I (and my twin brother, Coady) attended Coop from 1st through 6th  My first grade teacher, Mrs. Musgrave, was a great teacher.  I still have our class photo and an individual picture of her.  We lived on Chapis for several years.  The school ground was the dead end of that street.  I remember going there in the summer to play games for a small fee, Clue was my favorite.  i affectionately remember my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Young.  Mrs. Scarborough was the principal and a very kind lady.  I met her many years later while working in the Loan Department at Bank of the Southwest.  She hadn't changed a bit!   As you can see, good memories of Coop Elementary.

Mr. Pond at Burbank Jr. High was the teacher that taught our class how to diagram a sentence.  I don't think they teach that any longer but should.  Also loved Ms. Long (history teacher) at Burbank.  She was a great teacher and really took interest in her students.

At Sam Houston: Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Thornton, and Mr. Williamson were outstanding teachers and made an impact on my life.

Good times and great memories of a simpler time!

Caren, are you referring to Mrs Wanda Johnson with the Houstonetts?

08/17/17 09:31 AM #3309

Charlotte Oates (Rucker) (1962)

I was in Mrs Lattimore's homeroom at Burbank.  Also had her for English.  See would always come to school early to help those struggling with English.  I too learned how to diagram sentences and a lot about parts of speech from her.  Former classmates and I often talk about our days in her homeroom.  Good memories!

Deborah Hudson (Grace) (1968)

#3321, Tommy do you remember my Dad, Jack Hudson?  He was one of the Scout Leaders with Mr. Woods and my brother Jack Jr was in them with him.  I remember many trips to my Grandparents in Dripping Springs and Dad and Jack going to Boy Scout Camp at Devils Backbone, El Ranchocima (probably mispelled)  I attended some of those scout meeting when Dad had to "babysit" me.  Souting is a wonderful thing and I was in girl scouts from the beginning thru 10th grade.

All three of us kids went to Coop and remember the May Fate each spring.  Have some home movies of them.

Dolores,

Yes, Mrs. Wanda Johnson was the Houstonette sponsor and a wonderful mentor when I desperately needed an mentor//mother.  My home life was chaotic and she afforded great stability, advice, etc.  i don't know what I would have done without her and my Houstonette sisters!!

Deborah,

I so wish I had some May fete pictures.  Do you perhaps have them transferred to DVD?  The few films we had were destroyed in a fire.  :(

Judy, thank you for sharing the amazing story of Ronald Ridgeway's Viet Nam experience.  In February of 1968, I was on a fire base west of Highway 1 about 20 miles south of Da Nang during the Tet Offensive.

Louis,

Mr. Harvey was my driving coach.  After all these years, I am still a good driver. . . just ask my husband.  Mr. Harvey lived just down from us on Brenda just behind Parkway Hospital.

Charlotte,

I remember Mrs. Lattimore coming in early.  She let me come into her class early and help tutor.  I went to visit with her after Sam but lost contact when I moved to California for a few years.  She was so proud of all her students.
