Speaking of Burbank Homerooms, 4 of us did a tour 4 years back, and here we are in front of our old homeroom.  One photo of me in front of my old locker i used for those 3 years.  #1622

#3327 Caren, I don't have those on DVD...have transferred severl and need to do those.  I loved "performing" in those dances.  Great memories.

Caren Reynolds (Cates) (1965)

Deborah,

The May Fetes were some of my fondess memories.  I remember that the costumes were very elaborate. I cannot remember every performance but I know that in the first grade, we (Coady and I) were Hawaian Dancers with grass skirts.  In the fourth grade, I was able to perform in the May Pole in a yellow dotted swiss dress.  One year, we were Dutch dancers with pink and black costumes.  Coady's jeans were cut off and dyed black. Did you know that not all schools had May Fetes? We were very fortunate!

I also remember learning English type square dances in the lunchroom, which was a lot of fun.  When i watch a period movie, I think of some of the dances we learned.

Do you, by chance, remember our musice teacher?  Her name was Ms. Anderson.  She was young and I thought she was so pretty and nice.

Eugene,

Great pictures of Burbank.  I have driven by Burbank several times but never had the opportunity to go on tour. My homeroom was in the "shacks".  My homeroom teacher was Mrs. Denson.  She was voted "favorite teacher".  Her husband was my driving teacher at Sam Houston.  I guess he did a good job, I have an excellent driving record.

The class of 1962 had a fantastic reunion this weekend August 18-19 at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel at 249 and 1960. We highly recommend the place. Thanks to all who helped out and attended.

Caren Reynolds (Cates), all you have to do, is call the school, and set up a date.  They were extrememly nice, had 8th graders walk around with us and take photos with the school camera, looked at yearbooks in the library (yearbooks were after our days there, but most of my teachers had photos in there).  Gave us green and gold tee shirts, key chains and pens.   The real red carpet treatment.  Showed us photos of the time capsule they opened a few years back.   When we told the principle what year we graduated from there, his response was, "That was the year i was born!"

I had Mrs. Denson for 7th grade English.  In the shacks, Room 125, 3rd room down.  (i wrote down that stuff in my old handbook, LOL)  I do remember Mrs. Denson, seems like she had blond hair.  Nice lady.   Remember, in 7th grade we also had to take a class called "Reading Writing and Spelling, RWS".  Mrs. Gordon taught that class, right outside the library on the 2nd floor.

Also Caren, Roosevelt Elem.  had May Fates every year.  One stand out memory, is we did the "Mexican Hat Dance".  To this day, if I hear that tune, i'm taken right back in time... to that dance.

Caren, you are so right on about the May Fates & square dancing at Coop. What a blast from the past!! Ms Anderson was beautiful and a whole lot of fun. I enjoyed the square dancing sooo much. Swinging the girls around and doing the promenades. I think you had to be in 5th grade to take part. I know that's when I got to go anyway. I learned to hula hoop for the May Fate one year and still can do it. Well a little, anyway. How about the trips around the black top after lunch? Had so much fun!! Playing marbles before school. Playing Civil War on the playground. I always got to be a rider because I was so small. I got the biggest kid I could find to be my horse  and we won  a lot of battles. Then there were the top spinning contest on the sidewalk in front of the 3rd wing classrooms. Believe it or not, I never wore shoes to school until I went to Fonville Jr. High. E. R. Coop was absolutely the coolest school ever!!!

I remember practicing for the May Fate at DeChaumes Elementary School. We practiced in the cafetorium. Our mothers made costumes for us to wear, and we did a square dance. That was also the year I first heard the Fantastic Seven, a band of students from Burbank, Fonville, & Patrick Henry I think. I remember them playing the theme from Hawaii Five O. That's one of the things that got me interested in jazz music. Later at Fonville, I heard the Stage Band from Sam Houston High School and I was hooked. I joined the Stage Band in 10th grade and won the Outstanding Musician award at the Lee College Jazz Festival in 1978. After that I attented the University of Houston, joined the Musicians Union, and the rest is history.

#3338, Do you remember getting to go to the Symphonies & Theater  downtown Houston - It was a culture programs at Coop.  Also the 6th graders rode the bus each year to Huntsville to tour Sam Houstons home and see the planetarium.  So much fun!

One of my favorite memories is the snow cones on Fridays when it was hot and Popcorn balls in the fall. And the fall festival - my parents always helped with the haunted house and I never went in - helped set up but too scared to go in after dark.  And the book mobile opened a bigger world for me...still love spending time in a library.

#3333 Caren, I do remember her.  I loved marching into the dance & wearing the costumes.  We kept them for years.  For a small school in a middle class neighborhood Coop went out of their way to introduce us to a wider world.  I would of never probably gone to the museums, symphony, or live theater without first experiencing it when I went to Coop.

John (Billy) Spies (1971)

May Fetes were a big deal at Coop. I have a fond memory of Janice Lewis and I leading the opening procession our sixth grade year...we were big stuff.  All the guys had a bandana that matched our partner's dress, the girls moms made them for us. I know I was exposed to a lot of things (art, theater, music, history, etc.) by being a student at Coop that I would probably not have experienced at such a young age without the programs and field trips. Great time and place to be a kid.

I went to Deschaumes and we also took a trip to the symphony.. Every year ( maybe not every year but I remember going more than once ) we got on the big bus and took the trip to Huntsville. My favorite because we got to take a lunch and sit by my best friend all that way. It seemed like a long way. Now it's 30 min from where I live. I think a few times we had a zoo trip at the end of the school year.

The fall fairs were also fun. I loved the Frito pies. Such fun kids miss out on nowadays. So much fear in the world. Also loved the bookmobiles that brought books in the summer. I didn't have to bother my mom to take me to the library since I lived across the street from the school and the bookmobile parked there. And we went to the planetarium too. What fun!

#3343, Jackie.  Yes growing up in Houston on the Northside was like growing up in a small town.  Went to school with some of the same kids k-12th grade.  Everyones Mom had permission to spank or send you to time out if you were up to no good.  Loved my childhood.  Wish I had a movie of it to show my kids.  Hope they remember their childhoods with love too.

During the 1967-68 school year, I remember going with the Meistersingers to the Houston Music Hall to sing with many of the other school choirs in the district.  The hall was packed with HISD students.  My memory is somewhat vague as to they symphony conductor's speech; but it seems like he explained some of the movements in classical music.  As he finished explaining one movement, he would have the symphony play a piece that would represent that particular movement.  His speech was enthusiastic and, occasionally comical;  making learning a fun experience for the kids.  All of the choirs sang the Evening Prayer from the Hansel and Gretel Opera.  I thought the Music Hall's roof would be blasted  up into the air as the song reached its climax!  What a wonderful event!  What an unbelievable memory!

Hi Deborah, I know what you mean. It felt like a big family. The kids on my street would hang out at each other's house and would have to obey their friends parents just like their own. No play dates just hey mom I'm going to so and so's house. Just be home in an hour or however long. So many memories. Now kids have to set up a special time and date. Times were so much easier back then.

To all of the 1962 class that missed the reunion this last weekend you missed a lot of fun.  Everyone that attended seemed to enjoyed them self. Hope to see a lot of you at the 5th Friday lunch at Humble Cafee.

Rolanda Sandel (Beckmann) (1970)

Talking about former teachers - I had Mrs. Durbin at Burbank Elementary - 5th grade, I believe. I was working with a colleague that works in Houston but was in our office in Tulsa.  Had a computer glitch that messed up my security.  When I called the Help Desk, I had to provide answers to my security questions - one of which was "what was your 5th grade teacher's name?" and one was "what elementary school did you go to?"  She overheard my answers - turns out she went to Burbank Elementary and had Mrs. Durbin.  However, this girl is probably 30 years younger than me.  Turns out I had Mrs. Durbin the first year she taught, and she had her the last year she taught.  What a coincidence!  Such a small world.

I am safe and sound in Georgia; but, I have been watching the news regarding Hurricane Harvey.  It appears it will be hanging around your neighborhood for quite a few days and dropping a truckload of rain on everyone.  It is going to be pretty dangerous for everyone in your area.  So, I am keeping all of you in my prayers that no one gets hurt.  Keep safe and try to keep dry.

Charlotte, hope the cruise works out. I tried with the 61 class and got 1 response and that was this morning. So we are going on the cruise the 17th of Sep by ourselves.  She is a 62 grad of Sam.

Gene,  Thank you for your prayers.  Some need prayers more that others but we all are need prayers.  I live on Lake Conroe and early this morning the lake was full from all the overnight rain (5:45 am) it is still raining quite hard.  I received a bulletin at 4:00 AM that they were opening the gates on  the dam to prevent as much floodng as possible.  I work in the Texas Medical Center and most likely will not be able to get back down there until late Tuesday or early Wednesday.  Thank you so much for your prayers.
