“Save the Sidewalk” – Update
After many attempts – I finally was able to get a contractor (Hollis Kennedy House Movers) to go take a look at our sidewalk and give me a quote - to pick the sideway up, relocate it to a new location, and place it in a similar configuration as it current is. In order to pick the sidewalk up they would dig out around the sidewalk and pour new concert underneath it in order to stabilize it for the move. The quote came in @ $7500. So that’s a start on costing this adventure.
Still have not be able to find out what the City is planning on doing with the artifacts from all the classes – and to expand that thought – all the schools since Grissom is not the only one that is being rebuilt – though my focus is not the other schools just Grissom and in particular “our sidewalk”.
For discussion – let’s assume we are able to get the sidewalk to new campus – looking for thoughts/ideas on how to preserve it once it get over there. Out of the weather and protected somehow from more wear and tear.
One thought is a pavilion type structure with benches about – with the sidewalk being in laid in the foundation with some protective covering – the minimal size of at least 50 x (5 + additional 5 ft both sides for benches) – 50x15 maybe…
From one conversation I had with the architecture working on the drawings – he indicated that getting a spot in a hall to place it – with some form of covering to protect it – most like is not an option – though he isn’t the one that would approve/disapprove that scenario – so in my books it still an option on the table.
So where to go from here… still need to get the City to provide some insight into what their plans are – try to determine if there is a spot on the new campus that could support a structure that big and if so – can we get it allocated our way for our sidewalk… get a cost estimate on the pavilion or whatever is desided on protect the sidewalk - develop a set of conceptional drawings that could be used to present to the city - talk with the city - etc...bottom line – still a lot to do to pull this off…
