I also remember hearing that Orange came from Mr. Reynolds wanting to honor his almater UT whose colors are orange and brown.  Never heard where tiger came in?

I don't ever remember UT's colors being Orange and Brown. All I remember is Orange and White from UT. But yes, Mr. Reynolds loved his Vols.

I never have been able to figure how where the brown came from. I figured cheerleaders or football players would know more about the origin of the colors though.

Ruth, it was truly a wonderful time of briefly connecting with both you and Jim.  So much history has passed.  My only reget is that we have not been able to be in each other's lives more through these past years.  I am sure that we could have gained much from one another.  Soo... when are you coming to NZ;-)?

My husband (Class of '72) said they formed a committee that proposed a slate of mascots voted on by the student body. The committee also selected the colors (with no vote) based on colors not used by any other HS in town. Personally I never cared for the colors - I would prefer crimson and white.

Well, since the GHS colors were supposed to be different that the other schools, red variants were out (Red is 255/0/0 RGB, Crimson is 220/20/60 RGB, and Huntsville High's Cardinal is 196/30/58).  Also, remember the now politically incorrect chant, "I'd rather be dead than red!"  I've always been partial to big cats and orange.  Whitesburg lions were orange and blue.  Grissom tigers were orange and brown.  Orange is wonderful, especially when you match it with big cats like Tigers!  Hmmm, isn't there another tiger school with orange?   (You went there first!)  ;-)

I was under the impression that the new school was also going to be called Grissom. So it only seems logical that they would remain the Tigers with the same color scheme. Forgive me I'm old, adverse to change.

I don't think there was ever a push to change the Orange, just changing the brown to black. I did see a few ball caps that were Orange on Gray that weren't too offensive. However, gray is not a choice in the survey.

Thanks,

Alisa

Actually, Grissom has been using black instead of brown for several years.

I think for continuity the Grissom High mascot should remain the tiger and the colors orange, brown and white. But I wonder why we were not the Grissom Astronauts or Rockets, with some cool space age colors, in honor of Gus Grissom and the other astronauts, NASA, Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville being the Rocket City, and the work and dreams of so many of our families.

I hate that I had to miss the August 28th get together at Susan's house- I know it was a great time of catching up on things- Fridays and Saturdays are really bad for us due to commitments we have- However, I have not forgotten to be setting up our next get together in the Huntsville area, right now, w/ college football and the upcoming holidays, I may look at something in early January- Setting up a weekend may be difficult right now, unless it's another Sunday afternoon like we had in June at Baumhower's- I'm going to look at some possibilities regarding dates and locations, and I'll be posting something soon- Hope you all have a great week, may God Bless.

John, I'm not opposed to a week night get together during football season & the upcoming holidays.

Charles, I'll work on it, get a couple of possible dates/ locations, and run it by the forum.

Maybe we could get together for a Grissom Football game though Kay and Rick have done a lot of that. What a hoot that would be for those of us who haven't been in years.

Maybe our 74 team can play for this Grissom team. How did we get from being a major football force playing for a state championship to barely drawing a box score.

Basicaly the feeder programs for Grissom have dried up.  The YMCA does not have football teams and a few years ago one of the middle schools (Challenger) could not field a team.

I ran into classmate David Goodloe at Huntsville Hospital last night.  I only recognized him after he asked for his mother's room number.  He didn't recognized me at all.  He's living in Greenville, SC.  They only received 7 inches of rain.  It was good catching up with him.  I encouraged him to join our website.

Regards,

Mark

I live in Irmo, part of Columbia. So many of my friends lost their homes. My house is up high so we weren't effected except boiling water. Very sad but so many came together to help. I cried leaving street after trying to clean the damage the flood left. The haunted looks on my friends face broke my heart. But God is so good, our community pulled together. So proud of South Carolina!

Sharon, I'm glad you survived the terrible flooding in SC.  It's hard to imagine unless you have been through a flood, the utter devastation something as ubiquitous as water can do when it is out of control.  People will be trying to putting back their lives only to find somethings cannot be replaced, like family photos...

Mark, I'm glad you invited/encouraged David to join this site.  When I read your message, his name, a picture of him popped in my brain.  I'm thinking because our last names were "G" we shared homerooms etc.  I'm sure I am not alone in realizing how quickly time has flown since our years at GHS. I wouldn't want to go back to that time, but now at our age, I would like to take as many of us along for the rest of our journey.

Thank you for the update Mark and inviting David to join and stay in touch with the group. I am so sorry to hear about all those in South Carolina who were effected by flooding.

Thanks Ruth. I too want to have my classmates travel the rest of our journey together. It's ben exciting and wonderful to connect and rebuild new and wonderful friendships!

Sharon, just had time to catch up on posts this afternoon, chose to forego sitting in the rain watching the Titans play! Still hoping they will win today. My sympathies to and your friends in South Carolina, my sister and her family were safe, but I understand  the effect and devastation of aflood from the Nashville 2010 flood . One of my friends received a considerable amount of damage. Her kitchen was already being remodeled, so all her cookbooks were packed up. You do not think that something like a cookbook would be missed, but those family recipes and favorite recipes you prepared for your family are important. Cannot recall if I emailed or mailed a letter to Betty Crocker explaining the devastation, but they sent me box of cookbooks! It was a pleasure to deliver one to my friend, and then take the rest of the cookbooks to one of the many churches that helped people in the area for many months after the flood. Included in the each cookbook was a letter informing the people that Betty Crocker donated the cookbooks (did not think a plug for Betty was inappropriate).

Interestingly, the lady that sent the cookbooks called me after the area she was living in had heavy rains that flooded their towns. She learned first hand the importance of my request for cookbooks earlier in the year.

Maybe TMI, but you and your friends will be in my prayers as they rebuild and restore their lives.

Thanks everyone, couple of good friends lost everything. God protected my daughter who was couple miles from some apartments and house that were under water. Biggest problem with most people is mold and it's bad. Some houses wil probably be torn down.
Continue with prayers. So many people were helping, so proud of our State!
