KINSTON - Herbert "Herbie" Ingram Spear Sr., 63, of Kinston passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Herbie was born in Lenoir County on June 12, 1946, to the late Randolph and Annie Blanche Spear. He was a retired executive with APAC, operated Spear's Sporting Goods, was the first basketball coach and athletic director at Lenoir Community College, and attended Westminster United Methodist Church. He was a proud graduate of Grainger High School and Wake Forest University. Survivors include his sons, Herbert "Gram" Ingram Spear Jr. and wife Diane, of Kinston, and Charles Bailey Spear of Emerald Isle. He was an extremely attentive grandfather to Joshua Spear, Joseph Spear, Amanda Spear, and Susie Spear; and a loving brother to Denny Spear and wife Varion, of Atlanta, Ga., and Tommy Spear and wife Mary Frances, of Williamsburg, Va. He was also a proud uncle to seven nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2009, at Westminster United Methodist Church. A memorial ser-vice will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2009, at the church with the Reverend Haywood Smith officiating.
