Ooh, Gary...I like that one a lot. I've always enjoyed good poetry, too. Especially the kind I can understand. Remember reading Robert Burns in Mrs. Fleming's  class? I remember how hard it was to read.

Hope you are regaining your energy, Gary.

Happy late June to everyone. That sure went fast, huh!

Thanks, Gary. Happy 4th to you and all the rest of my most special friends from OC.  For all it's troubles, I'm still very thankful that I live in the good old USA.

Linda, thank you for letting us know the news of Warren's death. Though he was a year ahead of us, when you come from a school like OCHS was, and a county like Oglthorpe, most of us knew each other.  I still  care very much about people I knew then, whether I knew them well or not. There is a part of me that still lives there. I am very sorry to learn of his death. It must be a very sad time for his loved ones.

Again, have a safe and happy holiday, old friends.

Do any of you have a "special" piece of furniture?  Yesterday Sherron spent 12+ hours trying to arrange our sunroom.  One of her problems was what to do with a rather large rocker that I inherited from my father.  She finally was able to arrange everything to satisfy her obsessive proportional alignment disorder.  This morning I was able to enjoy my morning coffee in that old rocker and reflect on its life.  I first recall that rocker as where my grandfather spent his days.  It sat in a corner of the living room so he could watch traffic go by out the front door of our small South Georgia shotgun home.  To his left sat a table with ashtray, Prince Albert (in a can) and cigarette papers.  He would roll a cigarette, light it with a stick match and I would come running to blow it out before he shook it to extinguish the flame.  Then he would lean back in that big old rocker, look up at a picture of me in bowtie and sport coat that sat upon a bookshelf to his right and exclaim, "There's old Ed Rivers, gone up to Atlanta to be governor."  I never knew who Ed Rivers was and haven't bothered to ascertain his idenity, but I always prided myself on reminding my grandfather of such a person.  My grandfather was struck by a hit and run driver when my father was about 10 or 12 years old.  He wasn't expected to live but the Lord saw fit to give him an extra 40 or so years thought he was left crippled and mentally slow.  My father later enjoyed sitting in that chair to read the paper or the encyclopedia.  When he came across an interesting fact he would say, "Did you know that ......." and of course no one did so he would proceed to read aloud the new found fact.  He often insisted that he would die, "sitting in that chair right there" as he pointed to that old rocker.  Well, when "his time" came, he chose to dial 911 and lived another two months.  He never got another opportunity to sit in that old chair.  And now its my turn to occupy that old rocker.  I don't know if I'll die sitting in that old chair but I certainly felt a great peace and comfort as I settled into it this morning.  Maybe someday my grandson will settle into that old rocker and remember the story of its life much as I did today.    Some things have earned a place of honor in our homes and that old rocker is one of those things.  Later.

Gary, I loved reading about your rocking chair. To think how long it has been used by the men in your family makes it something you could never part with. How many thoughts have been thought, plans made, problems pondered and solved, etc. I'm glad you can now enjoy it, and that you appreciate its history.

I can't say I have real special furniture with such memories. I have a few pieces that came down through the family, but none are very practical. I have two pieces in particular that are actually in the way, but I can't bear to part with them because they were special to people I dearly loved. My kids don't need or want them, so I keep thinking one day I will find a place better suited for them.

My favorite non-furniture item is the big bread bowl that my grandmother got when she married, way back before the turn of the last century. She made bread and biscuits in it, and then when she died my mother took it, and made biscuits in it almost every single day. I can clearly see her hands working the dough, and forming the tender biscuits. I have never made anything in it, but it does look pretty holding fruit, and at Christmastime I put boughs of cedar and pine in it with oranges to make a pretty centerpiece. I cherish it, and try to take care of it. I have other things, but that is the humble item that holds the most vivid memories for me.

I hope you have many, many years to rock in your chair.

A Jewish man was leaving a convenience store with his espresso when he noticed a most unusual Italian funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse about 50 feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary Italian man walking a dog on a leash. Behind him, a short distance back, were about 200 men walking single file.

The man couldn't stand the curiosity. He respectfully approached the Italian man walking the dog and said: "I am so sorry for your loss and, this may be a bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen an Italian funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?"

"My wife's."

''What happened to her?"

"She yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed her."

He inquired further, "But who is in the second hearse?"

The Italian man answered, "My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my wife when the dog turned on her."

A very poignant and touching moment of Jewish and Italian brotherhood and silence passed between the two men.

"Can I borrow the dog?"

The man replied, " Get in line !! "

BREAKING NEWS:  SAVANNAH, GEORGIA IS NOW ON THE GULF  /  8/6/13...  President Barack Obama on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno...  "If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf — places like Charleston, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida — if we don’t do that, those ships are going to go someplace else.  And we’ll lose jobs.  Businesses won’t locate here."...

Let me be the first to wish Don a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY (tomorrow)!  I like to get those in before I forget.  Now Don, you shouldn't make light of the "mentally deficient".  Obviously his teleprompter was messed up.  I really do appreciate you pointing out his foul ups - the press certainly isn't going to do it!  Speaking of screw ups, where is good ole' Joe?  After a statement like that by PBO, good ole' Joe will be let loose to make some outstanding foot and mouth speeches just to distract guys like you that notice, and report such ignorant errors.  But then again maybe he knows something we don't.  I mean he is the smartest man in the world - Oh, wait.  Dummy Joe said that and his standards aren't too high. I think he once lost a debate with a rock. You know they could be going to widen and deepen Jacksonville and Savannah until they reach the Gulf.  Why waste all that time going around Florida when the ships could just take the Georgia-Florida Canal?  Any who, I hope you have a GREAT day tomorrow Don.  I trust all other who pass this way are fairing well also.  Later.

Don, though I told you on Facebook, I know it's not official unless I say it here, so "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" It's now a day late, but yesterday was crazy for me. I know you were thinking of Ron much of the day, and all the birthdays you shared, so we pause to send sweet thoughts heavenward to him, too.

Now it's PeeWee's turn. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" to you! I hope you are well in every way. You know, you are very deserving of being called by your regal name of Elizabeth, but in our hearts and memories you will always be loving referred to as "PeeWee. Hope that's okay with you.  Have a wonderful day.

To all my other friends, I hope you have a great weekend. Hugs and squeezes...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PEE WEE!...

And thanks for the birthday greetings for me. Liz treated me like a king yesterday. We drove up to Acworth for lunch at HENRY'S LOUISIANA GRILL. We had never been there before and if you've never tried it, we both highly recommend it. The place is run by Henry CHANDLER (no relation) who came over to our table to personally greet us and hang a couple of strands of beads around Liz's neck (hey, I thought it was MY birthday!). I tried Henry's famous LOUISIANA OOH LA LA, which has been featured on ABC Nightline, and includes Shrimp, Oysters, and Crawfish. Yummo! Liz had their Atchafalaya Catfish. It was all magnificent!... Liz also bought me a new CAMERA BAG for my birthday. I seem to wear one out every dozen years or so. And then we went for an afternoon visit to a Nursing home in Kennesaw that Liz visits with one of our church ministry teams once a month. Liz plays piano for them. The senior residents and ministry team sang happy birthday to me... I went there to be a blessing and I was the one who ended up being blessed. We completed my birthday by visiting my favorite bookstore... I am a blessed man indeed!... Have a great weekend mates... and thanks again...

Thanks so much for the birthday wishes on this class site as well as on Facebook!!    Those years just seem to be passing faster and faster.

I'll join Diane in sending wishes on our OCHS site to Don and PeeWee!!  I hope my fellow Leos had special birthdays!  Gail has one coming up this week, so early happy wishes to you Gail.

Even tho I read this message forum regularly, I have not posted because I don't seem to know anything new or interesting to share.  I do enjoy those of you who post tho.

We let our 45th. year slip right by without a celebration :(...       Hopefully we can have one of the "informal Sunday afternoon gatherings" this Fall, AND hopefully many of you can come!

Love you "old friends", and I think of you often!

Some phrases from yesteryear you don't hear much anymore.

  • Be sure to refill the ice trays, we’re going to have company.
  • Watch for the postman, I want to get this letter to Willie in the mail today.
  • Quit slamming the screen door when you go out!
  • Be sure and pull the windows down when you leave, it looks like a shower is coming up.
  • Don’t forget to wind the clock before you go to bed.
  • Wash your feet before you go to bed, you’ve been playing outside all day barefooted.
  • Why can’t you remember to roll up your britches legs? Getting them caught in the bicycle chain so many times is tearing them up.
  • You have torn the knees out of that pair of pants so many times there is nothing left to put a patch on.
  • Don’t you go outside with your school clothes on!
  • Go comb your hair, it looks like the rats have nested in it all night.
  •  Be sure and pour the cream off the top of the milk when you open the new bottle.
  • Take that empty bottle to the store with you so you won’t have to pay a deposit on another one.
  • Put a dish towel over the cake so the flies won’t get on it.
  • Quit jumping on the floor! I have a cake in the oven and you are going to make it fall if you don’t quit!
  • Let me know when the Fuller Brush man comes by, I need to get a few things from him.
  • You boys stay close by, the car may not start and I will need you to help push it off.
  • There’s a dollar in my purse, get 5 gallons of gas when you go to town.
  • Open the back door and see if we can get a breeze through here, it is getting hot.
  • You can walk to the store; it won’t hurt you to get some exercise.
  • Don’t sit too close to the TV. It is hard on your eyes.
  • If you pull that stunt again, I am going to wear you out!
  • Don’t lose that button; I’ll sew it back on after a while.
  • Wash under your neck before you come to the table, you have beads of dirt and sweat all under there.
  • Get out from under the sewing machine; pumping it messes up the thread!
  • Be sure and fill the lamps this morning so we don’t have to do that tonight in the dark.
  • Here, take this old magazine to the toilet with you when you go, we are almost out of paper out there.
  • Go out to the well and draw a bucket of water so I can wash dishes.
  • Don’t turn the radio on now, I want the battery to be up when the Grand Ole Opry comes on.
  • No! I don’t have 10 cents for you to go to the show. Do you think money grows on trees?
  • Eat those turnips, they’ll make you big and strong like your daddy.
  • That dog is NOT coming in this house! I don’t care how cold it is out there, dogs don’t stay in the house.
  • Sit still! I’m trying to get your hair cut straight and you keep moving and it is all messed up.
  • Hush your mouth! I don’t want to hear words like that! I’ll wash your mouth out with soap!
  • It is time for your system to be cleaned out. I am going to give you a dose of castor oil tonight.
  • If you get a spanking in school and I find out about it, you’ll get another one when you get home.
  • Quit crossing your eyes! They will get stuck that way!
  • Soak your foot in this pan of kerosene so that bad cut won’t get infected.
  • When you take your driving test, don’t forget to signal each turn.
  • Left arm straight out the window for a left turn;; left arm bent up at the elbow for a right turn; and straight down to the side of the door when you are going to stop.
  • It’s: ‘Yes Ma’am!’ and ‘No Ma’am!’ to me, young man, and don’t you forget it!
  • Be sure and wash good behind your ears. There is enough dirt there you could grow corn in it.

Later.
