Diane Harris (Moore)
Gary, I loved reading about your rocking chair. To think how long it has been used by the men in your family makes it something you could never part with. How many thoughts have been thought, plans made, problems pondered and solved, etc. I'm glad you can now enjoy it, and that you appreciate its history.
I can't say I have real special furniture with such memories. I have a few pieces that came down through the family, but none are very practical. I have two pieces in particular that are actually in the way, but I can't bear to part with them because they were special to people I dearly loved. My kids don't need or want them, so I keep thinking one day I will find a place better suited for them.
My favorite non-furniture item is the big bread bowl that my grandmother got when she married, way back before the turn of the last century. She made bread and biscuits in it, and then when she died my mother took it, and made biscuits in it almost every single day. I can clearly see her hands working the dough, and forming the tender biscuits. I have never made anything in it, but it does look pretty holding fruit, and at Christmastime I put boughs of cedar and pine in it with oranges to make a pretty centerpiece. I cherish it, and try to take care of it. I have other things, but that is the humble item that holds the most vivid memories for me.
I hope you have many, many years to rock in your chair.
