Jimmy Tiller

Hello everybody!  Jim, the last time I visited the park, there was not " a whole lotta shaking going on" but that was 5 or more years ago. I remember in the eighties, the rock would still shake if you know exactly where to place your index finger. I once took a  steel wedge and cut a place in the rock at that target point so as to remember the spot. Don't know if it still is visible, will check it out when the weather warms up on a sheltered ledge underneath that rock were the self inscribed initials of a native born author. If you have read miss florrie smith's first history book, you know who it is. Speaking of "miss  florrie"' she certainly was an  institution, and as truant officer, was the nemesis of certain members of our class whose names I cannot reveal due to solemn oaths made back then!

What a rush reading these posts! While I was 'officially' an OCHS student for only the final three quarters of the senior year, all my adult life I've looked back on Oglethorpe as the place of my first major 'rebirth.' I look back to Steve Eberhardt's mom (who took me in!) and all you good people for having saved my life. Athens High School was killing me! Now, moving on - I did get to Shaking Rock last spring while I was back and forth visiting my now-deceased sister. The rock doesn't shake. But this morning a memory did shake loose - perhaps a false memory; perhaps it was only a dream - that I stood in once for someone at a practice session for  'The Only Ones.' Only once mind you, since my musical talents are as limited as smarts are in Washington, D.C. I can picture Jimmy Tiller patiently allowing me to 'pretend' I knew a thing or two about a bass guitar. Of course he knew and I knew that I didn't. Maybe it was just a dream, but something about Don's business card posting put me there. My question for today (and I hope you don't mind my jumping in on this lovely conversation!) is, Are those huge footprints still painted up on the side of that water tower in Crawford? Just wondering. I forgot to look last year.

02/18/15 03:24 PM #3163

Jimmy Tiller

Roy, your mention of that practice session brought it back to me. You were learning my part on bass, so that I could fill in for john(dodge superbee) Etheridge. I borrowed his blue Gibson guitar to emulate his part and the lead parts.  It played like a dream. Do you remember the dances we payed for behind the courthouse in lexington?  We charged 25 cents admission and made so much we probably still owe 30 or 40 cents apiece to IRS! My most vivid memory with you is me in back and you shotgun in Stevie's yellow mustang when he ran it so fast he floated the valves. No problem, though, pope would adjust them next day on oak street at the station. as to cars, Diane, I remember your daddy's fairlane, it was lite blue sort of turquoise, with a white top, and certainly the envy of all of us boys! The footprints on the Crawford water tower remained until the next reprinting, as I remember them still there when I returned from service. I don't know how, but someway the authorities figured out who painted them. Although I was sorta afraid of heights on narrow spindly stair steps, I didn't let the tower in lexington feel left out either. Does anyone remember the skating rink coming to lexington?

02/18/15 04:37 PM #3164

Connie Morgan (White)

Jimmy, I remember the skating rink.  Went there until it blew away in a wind storm.

Good to hear from you Roy..  We are GLAD you came to OCHS ---  even for a short time.

I am loving this stroll down memory lane!

02/18/15 10:37 PM #3165

Charles McGarity

FOOTS.....my man. Pete here.  Yes I do remember the skating rink. As a matter of fact I have a story about

someone, who will remain nameless for now, who stole a pair of skates from there.  That's all I'm saying now. If anyone is interested, I will tell the "rest of the story" at our next gathering.

02/19/15 12:47 AM #3166

Jimmy Tiller

Pete, it seems so recent that you and I were partners (in crime &everywhere else) since the statute of limitations has expired, feel free to  relate this story. I remember it well, and my minds eye can see your 1961 blue Impala ( remember the cutouts on the mufflers) as well as your brand new Dodge Charger that I would have given my left one  to have!

Judy Stewart (Findley)

Wow.....this is GREAT.....I am just loving hearing from all of you and the memories ! Who knew we could remember SO MUCH and maybe even more folks will get on the website. Jimmy Willis, thanks for the information. I have been insured by BC/BS for so many years through Houston County and I am probably choosing that today as my supplement. My phone number is 478-397-2625 if you have an amazing deal for me (-:  Also, just wanna mention that I am sitting here writing WITH "THE MUMPS"! Can y'all believe it ? I had them for 2 weeks in the eighth grade and would have never believed I could have them again. After turning 65 on the fourth of February, it appears that I am back to my childhood...NOT lol. Mumps were diagnosed on Monday and blood test was positive when I went back to doctor yesterday. WHO KNEW THIS COULD HAPPEN? NOT ME! Jimmy Tiller, I think Diane is more of a "smarty pants" than she ever let on AFTER ALL she did catch that MATH WIZ, Dick Moore, and has held  on to him for almost 50 years (-: I repeat it is good to read the memories from our younger years. KEEP'EM COMING! WOULD SEND HUGS, but y'all might get the mumps, hahaha!

I remember that nite y'all played behind the Courthouse. As I

recall we had a Blast!

Also do any of you guys remember a

few of us coming here to Eatonton to the "Big Hugh Baby Hop"?

I know it was Owens, Myself, Foots I think you came with us.

And it was a couple other ones. We came over here in that ole

Rambler Charles bought. And as I recall--- We came to hear

"Joe South" I think that was who was here.

Charles, Roy Nation and I came several times. But there was one

nite when a whole crowd came. Charles and I made the trip

to "Bulldog's" and picked up the "Haven Hill" and other supplies.

then pick-up everyone else. Do any of you guys remember?

Diane Harris (Moore)

Oh, man! I hope anyone who checks out our site, will be sure and scroll upwards through ALL the flury of recent postings!! I think we are on the brink of having cold case mysteries solved!! Stolen skates, shaking rock tampering, cars being driven way, way too fast, and MORE! I don't know nut'in about any of them, since I spent most of my spare time at the monastery.wink

I think at the next gathering we need to have  reunion of the band!! You should do it in memory of our dearly missed Charles Owens. Start practicing! Don Chandler, you and Connie truly are treasure troves of memorabilia.

Judy, so you really do have the mumps?? How in the world did that happen? I did not know you could have them twice. This should make the news as far as I'm concerned. Seriously, I hope you feel better soon. I don't know what the implications are of having mumps at the age of 65, but it certainly will make you the talk of Marshallville. (I bet you already are!)

It was -7 when I got up this morning, and is hovering around -1 now. I know it is cold in Georgia, too, so let's all cuddle up and keep warm.

As I said, if anyone signs in to read this stuff, DO NOT FAIL to scroll way up to read all the recent post. I think Jimmy Tiller started it, and we are so glad.

02/19/15 12:01 PM #3170

Connie Morgan (White)

Diane, when you and Dick have a trip to Georgia (with enough time) in the plans, let us know and we can make a class gathering happen!!!    We could meet at a restaurant, or I'd love to have y'all come here.   I've found that when we are at a restaurant I am only able to talk to / hear those at my table.   We can "squeeze-in" here at the house and stroll down memory lane together.  Love the idea of "the band" playing again.   Who knows, some of us old folks might get up and "shake a leg"  HA!

Judy, so, so sorry to hear about the mumps.   I did not know you could get them twice.sad Must be cause you are so young at heart.   Feel better soon.

02/19/15 02:49 PM #3171

Jimmy Tiller

Judy, sorry to hear about those mumps. Of all the girls in our class, you were the one most like me in playing devilish tricks! I thought I was pretty sly, but you could always do me one better I will refer to page 24 of our senior yearbook, which shows the officers of the "o" club. In my yearbook, you signed next to your picture  and  added two words which said it all: Remember initiation? Hope you get well soon!

02/19/15 03:26 PM #3172

Jimmy Tiller

I hope I am not hogging the site, but every time I re-read everybody's posts, there were questions I did't answer. Jim w. I do remember the trip to the hop. To us, that almost the equivalent of the Dick Clarke show!  Can also remember the bulldog supply store in Crawford  and vividly remember our trips to long creek refuge for wayward students. I am wondering if Nancy tucker and wolf Adkins visit this site. I have fond memories regarding both of them, and the time had a little joke I played on Nancy that almost brought her to tears, but I don't want to relate them without permission!

Gary Grice

Great to see so many back on the site.  Thought for a while that it might go away due to inactivity.  Jim T. I guess I had forgotten how many "actions" you initiated in HS.  Think you might have missed your calling - coulda been a great "community organizer"!  If no one objects to a little ride to Jefferson, we have a nice clubhouse that would be a great site for a class gathering.  Keep up the posts ..... and memories.  Later.

Connie Morgan (White)

Gary, I'm good with a road trip to Jefferson.    Anyplace is fine with me.

Jimmy T.,  I think you have a lot of the "rest of the story" info. we would like to hear .

02/19/15 07:04 PM #3175

Judy Stewart (Findley)

HEY...Gary...road trip sounds GREAT....I am always ready to hit the road  (WELL, maybe not this week). Jimmy,  you are right ! I was a little more devilish than I EVER wanted to admit....hahaha. I am just glad that all the people that I have ever hung out with will never get together and tell ALL OF MY STORIES!  Thanks, Connie for the info you gave me by phone today.  KEEP WARM FOLKS....IT IS "TOO COLD" !

THROWBACK THURSDAY...

02/20/15 08:52 AM #3177

Jimmy Willis

Good morning Mates,

Since Jimmy say's we are past the time we can be punished

for some of the things which were put upon us. I am sorry but

do any of you guys remember the tent in Dennis's parents

pasture. I remember getting there but that is it? This was

some time after we got back from our Senior Party at "Charlie

Williams"! Or did I Dream That?!!!

Diane Harris (Moore)

Responses:

Jimmy Willis, I do not recall a tent in the Helmrich pasture, but I do recall the Senior breakfast at Charlie Williams. We sat at long tables, and I still have my dress that Mama made for me to wear.  I missed out on the tent escapade, but maybe Dick went after he took me home.

Don, thanks for that great picture! I think I see a little glimpse of Jimmy Cunningham there on the left. I thought the world of Jimmy. I rode the bus with him every day of my school years, ane he was the sweetest guy in the world. Those are some great fellows in that picture! Who of us would have thought that Dale would have gone on the be Elvis? I LOVE seeing old pictures, because not everyone was carrying around cell phone cameras back then.

Gary, that is very nice of you to invite us to Jefferson! I'd happily do that! And Connie, we hope to get down there in late April or early May, but can't nail it down quite yet. Dick has some business trips up in the air for around that time. Go ahead and plan a date if y'all want to, and we will do our dead level best to make it!

I forget some of the other comments. I love reading everyone's memories! Charles, I MUST know more about the Long Creek story, but you are a gentleman to ask Nancy's permission. I wish I'd been a part of some of y'all's adventures. Where in the world was I to have missed out on the dances behind the courthouse, and hear your band play? The last one I remember attending there was in 8th grade, and it consisting mostly of sitting in a chair against the wall.

Friday morning roll call. Present. I don't know about yours, but this IPad has the infuriating habit of inserting it's own words and letters for mine at times. Diane, I see that yours does, too! Regarding the joke I played on Nancy, it didn't have anything to do with our escapades on long creek, but rather with her 1963  Lavendar Ford Galaxy.  Regarding Dick Moore's math skills, I can't thing of anything that he wasn't skilled in! However, he has to share that title with  Charles McGarity, who NEVER missed a question, and he taught me just as much as  Mrs.Martha Moore. Without those two, I would never have survived Advanced Math. As a small token of appreciation,  three or four of us chipped in to give Mrs. Moore  our "going away" gift. Do you remember what it was, Pete?

I'm thinking Jimmy T. should write a book. Perhaps Don can provide photographic illustrations. Seems there's an audience waiting to review it.

Foots, do not forget the 47 or 48, There were so good times in those vehicles.

02/21/15 08:19 AM #3182

Jimmy Tiller

David, of course I will not leave out your 1947 ford and my 1948 dodge. You had me bested by one year as to oldest car owned of our class. I  recall one day for no reason I began to make circles in the bus parking area. I had made several  and when I glanced in my rear view I could see nothing but a 47 ford grille on my bumper! As I recall we continued this shenanigan long enough to draw a crowd (students, also unfortunately, a few teachers) before we dropped out of this formation and headed for the highway and safety!

Charles McGarity

Foots, there is not much that I don't remember about Mrs. Moore. To me she was unequalled as a teacher

and a lady.  During geometry, which I believe was our junior year, I did have a question on a test marked

incorrect. I got the correct answer but not the way Mrs. Moore did.  After discussing it with her, she agreed

that I was indeed correct.  So you are right, I never missed a question.  :)  Oh, by the way, the answer is

coffee table.
