Wow! Looks like the Air Force scored a direct hit on the Navy! Ouch!

And by the way... years ago when Liz and I were on a tour in San Francisco, our tour director shared his own local version of one of those pun/stories which ended with the punch line, "I left my harp in Sam Clam's Disco."

And Dick... the one about "George's Attack" brought back memories. I remember that one from my days at Georgia Tech before transferring to Georgia. For some reason I took two years of French at Tech and the only thing I remember is, "Je suis un ruine ambulante de Georgia Tech et un diable d'engenieur." Go Bulldogs!

... Cavemen use clubs and women use Little Black Dresses!! Oh, I know I'm gonna catch it for that one. Jim made me say that.

07/02/09 08:30 AM #662

Jimmy Willis

I did not!! All I knew about in service was MUD! And "little black dresses". What are ladders and ropes
anyway?! Besides, I was watching the Braves game!@%$!

Jim... as bad as the Braves hitting has been this season, they are only 3 games out of first place! The pitching has been spectacular!... and they have won three in a row. They scored 9 runs against the Phillies last night while I was in CHURCH. My pastor is as big a Braves fanatic as I am, and while his wife says that baseball is "of the devil", the pastor says it is "of God." Can I get an "Amen"!

Now our government... that's a different thing. I saw a story in the news last night that a very large group of U. S. POSTAL WORKERS did not receive their paychecks because they were LOST IN THE MAIL! And this is the same government that most Americans have voted for to take care of them from cradle to grave. Go figure.

AMAN BROTHER! AND PAST THE AMMO!

Happy Thur-Friday everyone! I'm off tomorrow (it could be argued that I'm a little off everyday) so this is my Friday. Not much going on around here today so I thought it would be a good opportunity to share a whoopie cushion story. Many - many years ago, my older brother and I bought a whoopie cushion while in Cherokee or Gatlinburg. We took the third seat, all the way in the back of our station wagon and prepared ourselves for some fun during our long ride home. We took turns blowing up that rubber bladder and sitting upon it. Being the gentlemen that we were, we properly said "excuse me!" after each and every bladder emptying episode. We were laughing so hard I was crying! Wanting to lengthen our enjoyment of each noisy session, we blew the bladder up bigger and bigger. Finally it reached its limit and the next sitting session resulted in a loud POP rather than the anticipated embarassing moment. This created even more and louder laughter, as well as relief to all of the other station wagon occupants. That whoopie cushion lived a short and brutal life but its memory has brought me much pleasure through the years. Quite an achievement for a simple whoopie cushion. I hope and pray that you each have a blessed and safe 4th of July weekend. Get out there and create a memory. Later.

JUST WANTED TO WISH EVERYONE A SAFE HAPPY 4TH! I'M HEADED OUT OF HERE NEXT WEEK. WE'RE GOING TO SAINT SIMON'S FOR SOME R & R, GOLF AND WHO KNOWS!&@?! EVERYONE HAVE A BLESSED DAY!!!
OH! BYE THE BYE, DON/CONNIE GEORGIA HAS PICKED UP SOME VERY
GOOD KIDS SO FAR FROM THE CLASS OF 2010 TO PLAY FOOTBALL.
JUST THOUGHT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED.
SEE YA!

07/02/09 03:45 PM #667

Donald Chandler

And I too would like to wish a HAPPY 4TH OF JULY to everyone out there! Be safe if you are out and about. Even with the problems we have in this country, I still think it is the greatest country on earth and I bleed red, white and blue. I salute all those men and women who have sacrificed to keep us free, and I pray that we stay that way.

Liz and I will be around metro Atlanta for the weekend I think. We have our annual Patriotic Musical at church tomorrow tonight. Liz will be singing with the choir and I will be officially taking photographs of everything. It should be nice, and will be followed by a big fireworks show and free ice cream for everyone!

Enjoy your trip, Jim and the golfing! And thanks for the Bulldog update. I do look forward to football season too, but there is a lot of baseball left to play yet.

God Bless you all!... and God Bless America!

I wish to put talk of dresses (any color), and Whoopie cushions aside, and wish all of you a wonderful Independence Day weekend. Dick and I are heading 3 hours northwest of here to the land of the Amish. It's our favorite place to go when we want to decompress. We'll watch the tall corn grow taller, roam the little country lanes, and check out the watermelon seed spitting contest in Millersburg on the 4th. Hey, maybe I'll enter!

God bless our country, and all our troops around the world. Let freedom ring.

Whoopie!!

OKAY EVERYBODY - BACK TO WORK -ITS MONDAY!!! Well, at least for some of us. I hope everyone had a great weekend and will fill the forum with delightful stories - like the hole-in-one that I know Jim will get this week and sounds like Diane and Dick had a GREAT weekend planned! We had a full weekend. I was off Friday and took the opportunity to take a short motorcycle ride. It was great - then time to change the fluids! Did some more work until time for the grandkids to arrive. We had a cookout with them and then went downtown Watkinsville for their first Friday celebration - It was a flop - so we went back to our house where Jennifer painted the girls faces and grandma made smores. Did some more work around the house Saturday morning until time to go to Granny Hughes 98th birthday celebration. All seven of her children were present along with grand-children, great-grand-children and great-great-grand-children. A good time was had by all!! Sunday morning we decided to go to Sherron's aunts' and uncles' places on the river outside Helen. Top up or top down? All indications were rain but we decided to risk it and go as far as we could. A major deciding factor was Sherron's sister. One of her bucket list items was to ride in a Jeep with the top down. I don't think she expected so much buffeting by the wind. Had a great day visiting and picnicking by the river. We drove from our house to Helen and back to Winterville to drop off Sherron's sister with the top down - then it started to rain as we pulled into her driveway! Score one for the bucket list!! Well that's about it for my weekend. I hope to hear from others real soon. Have a blessed day and week. Later.

Hey... Did anyone hear?... Michael Jackson is dead!

07/07/09 02:05 PM #673

Gary Grice

Don, you are kidding - right? Not THE Michael Jackson? The way some folks are carrying on, I would have expected him to have arisen already!!! Sorry, I'm being sarcastic, but am I lying? He should have run for president!! What is wrong with people?!?! Thus my User Forum entry on idol worship.
Well, I'm excited for another reason today!!! It looks like I "might" be able to attend the BMW International Rally in Johnson City, TN next week!!! I really wanted to go but health issues kept me from long range planning. Now it looks like I can go and stay at Sherron's brother's place in Ashville, short jaunt up to JC. No bike but open Jeep at least. Sherron WILL NOT ride on a bike!! We've been wanting to go to the Biltmore House also - so why not? Here's keeping my fingers crossed. Later.

Diane Harris (Moore)

How good it is to read the posts from dear friends, and to hear about your nice weekend. So glad you had fun, and Jimmy, it sounds like you are still whooping it up. Enjoy!!

Gary, your upcoming trip to Johnson City sounds like something you are really looking forward to. Sherron's stance on riding on the motorcycle confirms my opinion of her intellect. She is much too nice and talented to risk injury. Have a blast!

Dick and I had a great time in Amish country. Most folks think of Pennsylvania when they think of "Amish country", but Holmes County, OH, has a much higher concentration, and having been to both, I much prefer the area in Ohio. We avoid the "touristy places", and take to the numerous little county roads where we just love seeing the farmers in their fields, the women hanging out their clothes, the children playing in the yard, and all in the manner it would have been done generations ago. We did drive into the county seat on Saturday and see a great fireworks show. Then, Sunday morning, we left at 6:30 AM to be back for Sunday school so I could teach my little 1st and 2nd graders. Unfortunately I missed the entry time for the watermellon spitting contest. And after all that practice, too!

On Monday, I went to the orthopedist about my knee. He used a dirty word in front of me--arthritis! But, he said it wasn't that bad yet, and we don't have to even think about replacement until I am way into my 60s. (I didn't remind him how close that actually is) Then, he gave me a cortisone shot, and I am wondering if that was a good idea. My knee has felt worse since. Have any of you ever had that experience? He said it might feel that way for a couple of days, and then get much better. I am sure that will be the case. I definitely hope so, because I am getting calls wondering when I will be able to resume my routine Can Can routine at the club. ( I am so ridiculously strung out on caffeine right now---I actually quit that about a year ago) I hope everyone knows I am so kidding.

Well, I just wanted to check in. Here I am in Ohio, with all my family far away, and I don't ever "run into" old friends like you. We have wonderful friends up here who love us and who we love in return. However, there's no one with whom I can share common old memories, or who knows what it was like to grow up where we did, or who knew my family, etc. This has just been a really special forum for me. Even if no one reads it, it has been good therapy for me. Gary, again, thanks for continuing to maintain the site.

Sorry this has been so long. Sending everyone my love.

Diane

Gary Grice

Diane, glad to hear you and Dick had a good weekend getaway. I hope you will post some pictures!!! Sorry you missed the watermelon seed spitting contest. Isn't it wonderful to go back to a simpler life?
Ah, the wonder shot cortisone! You wonder why in the heck you would let anyone do that to you. I think the shot is to take your mind off why you originally went to the doctor. The initial pain is usually greater than what you were dealing with. But it does get better, from my experience - several in the knee and shoulder. Like they say, it'll feel better when it quits hurting!! Sorry to hear you'll have to give up the Can-Can! More and more of my Can-Can's are becoming Can't-Can't's everyday!! Replacements sound rough but everyone that I've talked to think they are great - once they get over the surgery and can move again. Check with Teresa - she is like the bionic woman now! I've got to get back to putting a leash on the Dawgs some one let out. They're not all where they're supposed to be. Later.

Kathy Carter (Campbell)

Sounds like Diane and Dick had a wonderful weekend.
Diane, I have had cortisone shots numerous times in my shoulder joints, but never my knee. It has always helped my shoulder after a few days.Surely hope its all better soon. I'm afraid that's one of the results of a-g-i-n-g as my doctor told me back in June when I had to have xrays for my back and legs and learned that I have degenerative disc disease. I am on a medication that blocks nerve pain due to compressed nerves in my back.
Considering our year of birth, I certainly should not be complaining about the wear on my body, just thankful for
every day that I live.

Everyone please remember in prayer, my soon-to-be(next month) nine year old granddaughter, Abigail. She has juevenile rheumatoid arthritis which they diagnosed in April and are hoping she will outgrow it, however she has had another flare up and can hardly walk today. The pediatrician made an appointment for her with the pediatric rheumatologist for Aug 10. She also gets braces on tomorrow and I know she will have a sore mouth for a while so please lift her up.

Have a good week.

Kathy, my knee has gotten progressively better during the day, and I am so glad. It's still not back to normal, but I feel certain it will be. All in all I still feel quite young, (in my thinking, at least), but pesky little issues like this are starting to pop up. Your experience, and Gary's, reassured me. Thanks!

Kathy, sorry about your little granddaughter. Nothing is worse than seeing our kids, and now our grandkids, have health problems. It rips the old heart right out. I will be sure and say a special "grandma" prayer for your little doll.

Gary, per your suggestion,Dick helped me post some pictures under my profile of our Amish trip. I know they are nothing new for those of you who have been, but if you haven't, here's a glimpse of why we enjoy going up there once in a while. If you ever want to come, you can sure make a pit stop here. We have spare beds, plus a bathtub for those who like their bed extra firm. : )

Good night, one and all.

WOW the pictures are GREAT Diane!!! Thank you (and Dick) for posting them. Kathy, so sorry to hear about health problems for you and grand. As we get older (yuck) we sometimes need little speed bumps to slow us down. I'm starting to expect them and slow down before I hit one full speed. Doesn't take away the bump, but makes it a little less tramatic. Jim, I hope you are having a great vacation and we want to hear about that hole-in-one!!! Pictures from you would be great also. Hope everyone has a great and blessed day. Later.

Diane… those photos are WONDERFUL!!! And I’m not saying that because you are my cousin. As one who really appreciates a nice photo, you have really captured the spirit and culture of the Amish. I wish that Liz and I could have been there with you and Dick. We have visited Amish Country around Lancaster, Pennsylvania a couple of times and really enjoyed it. And I remember secretly taking a few photos too, against the wishes of the Amish (God forgive me). And if any of you are ever there, be sure to visit the little town of Intercourse. We will be sure to add Ohio Amish Country to our bucket list.

I’m glad to hear that everyone had such a nice Independence Day. Sounds like you had a great weekend, Gary. Liz and I had a nice 4th of July weekend too, although it did not go exactly as planned. That’s what makes life interesting. We did go to our church Patriotic Musical Friday Night and really enjoyed it, and the fireworks that followed. We had originally planned for weeks to have a family reunion at my sister’s house in Oglethorpe County to honor the memory of my Mom whose 100th birthday was on Saturday the 4th. But my sister wasn’t feeling well and it didn’t work out. But… Ron’s daughter Lori Lee and her two children, Mia, 13 and Ana, 10 (Ron’s grandchildren) from Tampa/St. Pete came up to visit us Sunday and we had such a wonderful time! We had our own little picnic/reunion on our screened in back porch with pizza, chicken wings and watermelon. It was fantastic! I sure wish we could see them all more often but we made the best of the time we had. Life is good!

By the way… Kathy, Liz can sympathize with you and the degenerative disc disease. We will pray that you don’t have to go through the three back surgeries she has endured. And Diane… Liz has the arthritic left knee too, and has had to have fluid drained off it a few times. She’s had her share of physical problems. As we used to say in the country, “she was cut out right, but sown up wrong.”

Have fun, Jim… and keep it in the fairway!

Have a great weekend everyone! I just had to check in to say that I just had a delicious brush with Georgia by going through the Chic-fil-a drive-thru and getting a peach milkshake! My niece from down home recommended it, so I yielded to temptation. I should not have, yet I have no regrets. It was YUMMY, and gave me a rush of summertime, and memories of hand churned ice cream being made on a hot night in Enterprise.

My love to all. If you get around to making ice cream this weekend, think of us.

On tue. I made two peach cobblers from fresh freestone peaches, one for us to eat then one for freezer for Sunday. They were so good. The Georgia bells will be ready in a couple of weeks and those are my favorites, looking forward to them.Pictures were great. They remind me of when we went to Holmes county a few years ago, spent 3 or 4 days there, enjoyed it so much.

Have a great weekend everyone.

I've sure enjoyed keeping up with y'all on the message forum. Always good to "hear" from friends - and many days you made me laugh! What a great group of people I was blessed to go to school with!!!!!!!!!!

I've been working and visiting with kids when I could. Am looking forward to a few days @ St. Simons with both sons and their families in 1 1/2 weeks. (a daughter-in-law's grandparents have a house there, and very generously allow us to stay there)

Diane, I had one of the peach mildshakes. Delicious! It's a good thing I live far enough from Athens to keep me from running to Chick-fil-A every day.

Jim, someone was telling me about a "sea-food" restaurant on Hwy. 44 between Greensboro and Eatonton. I think it is called the Big Catch (but I'm not sure about that) Are you familiar with it? If so, how's the food and the price?

I've read with interest the banter about little black dresses, and tried to recall if I ever even had one... I don't think so :(

Keep on writing! I love you guys.
