Diane Harris (Moore)

I was so sleepy that my eyelids felt like they had lead in them. But on my way to bed I stopped by to check my e-mail, and one thing led to another, and POOF! Here I am, feeling compelled to say "Hey" to everybody.

Connie, I mainly had to respond to your inquiry about the "Big Catch". I thought, "hey, I live in Ohio, but I've been there!". When Dick and I get down to Lake Oconee , which is not nearly as often as we'd like, we always like to explore and see what's new, and there's always something. We ate there in Feb. and enjoyed it. I honestly can't say that we thought it was all that good for the price, but maybe we just didn't know what to order. Maybe Jimmy can give you better guidance. We heard it is very popular. And Connie, I had my first peach milkshake Friday, my second Saturday, and probably would have had my third one today, but as we know, Chic-fil-A is closed on Sunday. No wonder these pounds don't go away! I just got carried away with the Georgia Peach thing, I guess. And have a blast at St. Simons! Between you and Jimmy, I am wishing very much that I could visit a beach. Ohio is seriously lacking in that department.

OK, it's on to bed for me. I am always worn out on Sunday nights, and this is no exception. Hope everyone has a good week.

Oh, and Cathy, you'd better not come up to Ohio again without letting me know!

Love,
Diane

Connie the Big Catch is bout as close as we can get
to a seafood rest. Its good but not as good as I had
last week. It just will satisfy the need until you
can do better. You'll have a better time at St. simon's
next week Barbara Jean's, The Crab Trap. Have a Great
Time. Anyway, the Big Catch is under new owners and
seems better. I think it's worth a visit. I always get
the seafood platter.
Have a great week everyone! (I thought all you
girls had a "little black Dress").

Sounds like you had a great vacation, Jim… golf, the beach, the family and great seafood! I’ve heard it said that a bad day of golf is better than a good day at work.” Is that true?

I had a very exciting weekend!... worked in the yard on Saturday. But spending time with the mower and the trimmer is a great time to think. And I had a brief visit from a possum… just crossing my back yard. Looked like he was heading to Oglethorpe County. Good luck to him. To be in the city, we get a surprising number of critters here in my back yard... chipmunks, rabbits, squirrels, turtles, hawks.... along with a wonderful variety of birds. We’ve had sightings of bears just a mile or so from our house but not in by back yard…yet. When I work with my trimmer I sometimes have visions of turning a few of my shrubs into animal shapes… you know… like those at Disney World. :-) Must be the "Michelangelo" in me. I have this huge round shrub and I can just see a turtle in there just yearning to be set free. My neighbors would really love me. Sunday was a day of rest… went to church and rested my sore aching muscles from the yard work and watched the Braves. No more Braves games until Thursday (All-Star Break). And Liz sings, “Halleluhah!”

Connie… nice to see you on the forum again. Sounds like you have a great time with your family. Here's wishing you a wonderful trip to St. Simons!

And by the way… here’s wishing Inez a wonderful birthday tomorrow. We miss hearing from you here on the forum. I’m praying that God will pour out his blessings on you on your special day and maybe throw in a few nice surprises too. Happy Birthday!

Donald, I have detected a turtle theme with you lately. First, a dream, and now you are seeing one in a shrub. Hmmm. I shall leave the deep meaning of this to Gary, but it's possibly Freudian.

OK, I just had to check in and say, "HELP"! You, my fellow Indians, I need an intervention! I had another peach milkshake today! I didn't mean to, honest. I was out shopping for my grandkids, and next thing I knew I had a straw in my mouth and I was grunting something that sounded like, "G-o-o-o-d". This must stop. It is exactly the reason I no longer have a relationship with little black dresses, JIMMY! I still have that little dress, thanks to a sweet mother who couldn't throw things away, but it is still a little black dress, while I have "evolved" into a large white woman. Friends, please hold me accountable, and do not permit me to slide into the abyss of cold, creamy, peachy oblivion. There.....recognizing the problem is the first step.

Poor Dick, he probably wants supper, but first things first. Don, speaking of seeing turtles in shrubs, I am seeing works of art in gourds. I have planted three varieties this year, "cannonball, corsican, and dipper". I have always been intrigued by gourds, and how they have been used through the years. I remember drinking from a dipper gourd at Grandma's when I was a kid, and seeing purple martin houses made from them. I hope to dry these and try my hand at wood burning designs on them, and experimenting with stains and paint. Then again, I may just become known as "the crazy lady who grows all the gourds". Right now, other than a couple of tomato plants, the only thing growing in my vegetable garden is sunflowers and gourds. Any of you have experience growing gourds? Would love to know.

OK, Dick really must be fed. He is so patient. His mother comes for a visit this Friday for a couple of weeks, and I am looking forward to it. It will be bittersweet, since it will be without his Dad, but we will have a good time in his honor. I have always loved my in-laws dearly, and consider myself very blessed to have acquired them.

I am going to feed my husband, then do vigorous yard work until I work off three peach milkshakes. I should be busy until frost.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, a day early, INEZ!! You are still as pretty as ever. Hope your day is wonderful.

I'm blaming Diane that today as soon as I got off work, I drove straight to chick-fil-a to get one of those wonderful peach milkshakes. From the little chunks of peaches to the whipped cream on top, it was delicious!

Don, if you get bored, my yard could sure use lots of work. I'll even let you trim shrubs and bushes into animal shapes.

Happy Birthday Inez!!!!!!!!!

love to all,

Happy Birthday Inez!!! Been kind of busy the last few days but just had to let everyone know, we passed the 5000 visitor milestone! 5010 to be exact, as of 4:00PM. All of that talk of yard work has made me tired - I think I'll go have me a big ol' Peach Milkshake or a Frosted Orange from the Varsity. I wish! Got to run home, grab a quick bite to eat and head off to meeting at church. Anybody know what the requirements are for a Physician's Assistant? I saw one yesterday that looked all of 21 (very attractive female)! What happened to the old grey haired guys that used to practice medicine? I'm not complaining - I have a female GP and 2 female dentists - and think they are great but just doesn't seem right that a DOCTOR could be my daughter!! I think I'm getting O - L - D. Hope you are all having a blessed week. Later.

GARY I THINK THE P.A. REQUIRES A MASTERS DEGREE. B.A. IN SCIENCE AND THEN TWO YEARS IN DEGREE FIELD I BELIEVE. MY DAUGHTERS WANT TO GET THEIRS. (AND I THOUGHT I WAS ABOUT OUT OF SCHOOL!) CONNIE SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL YOU FOR SURE.

Hope you are all having a good week.

Gary, if the site "counter" only counts folks that sign in, I can assure you there have been MANY more than 5,000 + visits!!! There are lots of days that I don't sign in, but just click on the message forum to read anything that has been written. THANK YOU again for setting up and taking care of this site.

I am so ready to see y'all. Could you check your calendars and see how Sunday afternoon, Sept. 27 looks for a "get-together". Please let me know what you think. If there is interest, we can start calling people that may not check the website so that people can put it on their calendars...

take care,
connie

07/15/09 08:11 AM #694

Gary Grice

Connie you are correct. I am guilty of just visiting and not signing in on many occasions myself. The counter only counts people who sign in and only once in a 24 hour period, so our "numerous" daily check-in's only count as one visit.
Sept. 27? I had "rearrange my sock drawer" on that day but I guess I could move that to another day! It would be great to see everyone again. I was just noticing how many August birthdays there were and thought "what a great excuse for a get together". Hopefully by September our lives will have slowed down enough so many can attend. What a whirlwind summer this has been and continues to be. Should be some good stories! Where? What time? What can we bring? I think we need a theme, like, "See You in September" or "The Little Black Dress That Shrank"!! Can we have Peach Milk Shakes? Don't we need a committee get together to discuss (excuse to see everyone) this?
I hope everyone has a very BLESSED day!! Later.

Hey Connie… I will be over to do your yard work… right after I finish all the things that Liz has on my “honey do” list. September 27th looks good right now for another reuion! Liz and I are planning a trip up through the Midwest and the Northeast in early September if her back cooperates, but we should be settled back in by then. I love the fall. It should be a great time to get together.

You raise a great topic Gary. When it comes to doctors and/or medical staff, the only thing I really care about is whether or not they know their stuff. It matters not what sex they are, what color they are, or their age or ethnic background. I have had the same dentist for 35 years now, because he’s good. He’s a white Jewish male. And we both love Braves baseball and the land of Israel. I would say we talk a lot, but it’s kind of one-sided… he usually has his hands in my mouth. My Dermatologist is a woman. But she really knows the skin and a lot about skin diseases and moles. I’m very comfortable with her. And I have had the same GP since 2001. It was then that this doctor, also a woman, properly and immediately diagnosed my unusual medical condition, Rhabdomyolisis, and sent me to the emergency room for proper treatment, preventing almost certain kidney failure. She is the only person in this world that I give credit for actually saving my life. If she had mis-diagnosed me or sent me home, I would be a dead man today. And by the way… she is also a black woman. She really emphasizes PREVENTIVE care… diet, exercise, medicine. So when it comes to my health care, it doesn’t matter to me if they are wearing pants or a little black dress… and long as they know what they are doing.

And a final note... when you mentioned 5,000+ visits to the web site, I thought you were talking about me alone.

Diane Harris (Moore)

Looking forward to seeing who ever shows up in September! Thanks, Connie, for again offering your home as party central.

Don, I am with you on doctors. As long as they are great at what they do, I'm fine. I must say though, that I have noticed as Gary has, that they are getting younger.

Just so you know, I have been peach milkshake free for TWO whole days. Currently I don't even have a desire for one. Surely some of you have prayed for me, because on Monday I would have clawed my way through the drive-through window for the one I had. Big black dress, here I come!

Just took 5 dozen oatmeal butterscotch cookies out of the oven. Wish you could smell 'em. They are for our VBS next week, so they will be frozen and hidden lest a certain male find and devour them.

Don, if you get to this part of the mid-west, PLEASE come see us! That goes for everybody!

Well we've almost made it to the end of another week. I'm headed up to Asheville for the weekend. May have to re-evaluate attending the motorcycle rally but will be visiting the Biltmore Estates. Thinking you could all use a good laugh, I added some JOKES you have been sending me. I trust you will all continue to have a blessed week and a GREAT weekend. Later.

Enjoy your weekend trip Gary. The Biltmore House is a nice place to visit. Liz and I stopped there in 1984 on a trip up the east coast. It probably hasn't changed a whole lot in 25 years. I'm glad I don't have to do their yard work.

Thanks for the invitation to visit, Diane. Our plans right now are to drive from Louisvile, Ky to Chicago Illinois and then from there to Olean, New York. How much of a detour would it be to come to Dayton and have a glass of iced tea on your patio? If you tell Liz about those cookies you are baking, the detour woulldn't matter to her anyway... she never met a cookie she didn't like! And by the way... I love Chic-fil-a. There's one not far from us down the street. I go there probably every week and have yet to try the peach milkshake. But you all have almost convinced me.

Kathy Carter (Campbell)

Hope all of you who are going on trips have a safe and great time. We have been to Biltmore numerous times through the years when we have had family visiting and have always enjoyed each time. Connie, I hope you have beautiful weather for your beach trip and it won't be a "wash out" like when you went to Fernandina. Diane, ya'll have a wonderful time with Dick's mom while she is visiting. We live way out in the country, nowhere near a Chick-Fil-A so I haven't tried the peach shake. My girls are coming tomorrow for the weekend and we are going to make homemade peach ice cream.
I certainly like reading about all of you on this site and I check more often than I comment.
Have a great weekend.

Diane Harris (Moore)

Have a great get-away, Gary. I've always wanted to go to the Biltmore House, but haven't made it yet. It seems the closer we get to Georgia, the less we get to see. We're always on such a mission to get there, I'm often pointing and saying to Dick, "I want to stop and spend some time here sometime", but we seldom do.

Kathy, enjoy that peach ice cream! I think I overdid the milkshake thing, cause the craving has stopped. I was starting to think I might be pregnant! HA! Enjoy your family this weekend.

Don, sounds like you are going on an interesting journey. I think I have heard of Olean, but am not sure where it is. Maybe we went through there once or something. My daughter-in-law, Annie, is from Binghamton, NY. It's a pretty area. Are you going to visit someone? And I mean it, you can come by here any old time! It might make a circuitous route, but if you get anywhere close, we'd love to see you. Check out your Atlas and see. Cookies could be arranged! Chicago should be great fun. We have spent lots of time there in the last couple of years. You know the Sears Tower is now Willis Tower as of today. That will take some getting used to.

Must go. Tomorrow is a big day. I'm meeting Dick's sister near Cincinnati to pick up his mom and bring her on up to our house for a couple of weeks. Margaret is headed in another direction, but will come back by here on Saturday for the night. I love Dick's mom, and I'm sure we will have a good time visiting. She fell last Friday in Belk's, and her knee is bothering her a bit. Hope it gets better and not worse.

Love to all. It's a traveling time of year for many of you. Have fun. Stay safe.

Good Friday morning to all.

Diane… if we don’t get through Dayton on our upcoming trip, we will be sure to keep it in mind if we are ever in the neighborhood. Thank you for your northern hospitality. As part of our planned fall trip, we will be attending the September 3rd opening reception for an art exhibit at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY… “Walls Speak: The Narrative Art of Hildreth Meiere.” Hildreth Meiere (1892-1961) was a well known Mural Painter and Mosaic Artist with a studio in New York City from about 1916 to her death in 1961. She was a pioneer among women in professional art and worked with many of the country’s best architects in the early 20th Century. Her most famous work is “Dance, Drama & Song” the three huge circular sculptural medallions that still decorate the exterior wall of Radio City Music Hall. She executed well over 100 commissions in her life, including work for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair and the 1939 New York World’s Fair. She also did the interior decorative art (mosaic floors, domes, ceilings, etc.) for the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln. Much of her work was for churches and cathedrals around the country… including mosaics for St. Louis Cathedral, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC, and Washington National Cathedral. I also have a family connection with Hildreth Meiere. My grandmother, Marion Meiere (who also died in 1961), was a second cousin to Hildreth. I communicate with Hildreth’s daughter Louise in Stamford, Connecticut on a regular basis.

By the way... when we visit Chicago, we were thinking of going to the top of "Willis Tower"... with Jim's blessing of course. Either that, or go see the Cubs at Wrigley Field!

Have a great weekend everyone! Liz and I have big plans… to go to Chic-fil-a and try a peach milkshake. It had better be good!

DON! IF I HAD MY CHOICE THERE IS NO QUESTION WHICH I'D GO DO!!! BASEBALL WINS EVERYTIME! BESIDES, JUST LOOK OUT YOUR WINDOW WHILE LANDING AND YOU CAN KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE BASEBALL!! AND BY THE WAY, THAT PEACH MILKSHAKE IS LIKE NECTER FROM HEAVEN!
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE.

It has been a beautiful weekend here in metro Atlanta. Hope you all have had a nice one.

Jim... the choice would be an easy one for me too if I were the only one to be considered, but we will be visiting some of Liz's family when we visit Chicago. So if I don't make it to Wrigley Filed on this trip, maybe I'll make it another time.

By the way... I'm not a golfer, but I would like to tip my cap to the "Old Geezer" Tom Watson, who at age 59 almost won the British Open this afternoon. It was within his grasp. If he could have made that 8-foot putt on the 18th hole of the final round, he would have been the oldest golfer to ever win a major golf tournament. Even though he lost it in a playoff, he did "old geezers" proud. Does anyone know any 59-year olds out there still playing golf?

And finally... thumbs up to the peach milkshake at Chic-fil-a! Peach is not my favorite flavor, but I highly approve! "Nectar from Heaven" indeed!

Happy Monday one and all!! We had a beautiful weekend. I didn't get to the bike rally but had a great time none the less. The Biltmore Estate is a sight to behold. We enjoyed the grounds and gardens even more than the house itself. The (several mile) stroll down to the bass pond and back was terrific!! We also took in the Winery and Historic Horse Stables where we saw one of only five anvil players in the world. He is the Chief Blacksmith at Biltmore Estates and is an artist in both smithing and music. Yesterday we started out for downtown Hendersonville and took a detour that led us to Bat Cave and Lake Lure. Then we wound up on top of Chimney Rock, the best place from which to view Lake Lure. We were once again more impressed with God's creation than man's. Don, you would have been in picture-takin' heaven!!
We had to "cheat" a little and grab a peach milk shake. Wonderful, wonderful? Sherron's uncle was good friends with Truett Cathy and a benefactor to Camp Winshape. This gave us an inside edge for free Chick-Fil-A coupons while Broadus (her uncle) was living. Once again, its who you know!!
Well I guess I should get busy and earn my keep. Hope you all have a blessed week. Later.

We have asked many people, including some of you, to pray for Liz’s friend Pat in Louisville, Ky who is suffering from sclerederma and pulmonary fibrosis. Pat is a real fighter, but unfortunately the latest news is not very good. Pat is now under hospice care in her home and unless there is a miracle from God, her days on earth are down to a precious few. Liz is having a very tough time with this since she and Pat have been best friends for over 50 years, growing up together in school and in church. We saw Pat when we were in Louisville at Christmas, but Liz wants to go see her one more time. So we are taking an unplanned trip to Louisville, leaving around mid-day today. We will just be gone until Wednesday, depending on how events unfold. This is going to be a tough one folks, so we would be grateful for your prayers.

Susan Peterman (Harris)

Hello everyone,

I'm back. So much has been going on that I sometimes think I am a walking zombie. I don't know where I have been or where I am going.

I tried to get on the other day and found that I forgot I had changed my email address and did not have it changed anywhere. Not to mention that perhaps I am suffering from forgetfulness. I did not even remember my password that I had been using.

Thanks Gary for correcting that for me.

Not much of anything interesting has happened to me. Just work, work, work, and more work. However, I did undergo some surgery and have lost 46 pounds. I am hoping for a lot more. People at work are calling me baggy lady now, but I refuse to buy any new clothes until I lose more.

Thanks for the Birthday wishes from some of you and thank you Diane for the sympathy note about my brother. I sure do miss him.

Love and best wishes,
Susan J. Peterman Harris
