Gary... I too appreciate the comments about "happiness", and I think Diane's quote, "The best things in life aren't things," is right on. I do hope that I have gained a little wisdom through the years, and Liz and I both get far more satisfaction out of our relationships with family and friends than we ever have. And we have enjoyed a lot of wonderful experiences and visited many beautiful places along the way. Liz came back from this last trip with an aching back, but with a big smile on her face, having visited family and friends in Louisville, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Washington DC. And I had the opportunity to meet cousins on my side of the family too. Out of the 13 nights we spent on the road, only five of those were spent in motels, the other eight we spent with family. In the world today, it seems that we all get scattered from coast to caost, and it is not easy to get together. Keeping those special relationships going strong requires a lot of effort, but believe me, it is what matters the most.

Have a great hump day everyone, and enjoy the rest of your week.

For any who check in but do not receive email updates, Steve and Edna's son, Doug passed away this morning. Our prayers go out to them and their families.

I've sure enjoyed reading several people posting this week.
Loved your comment Janie. Hope you got to enjoy that Ga. victory all week. I agree with Jim: Go dawgs..
Gary, I always enjoy your words of wisdom and humor.
Don, I sure enjoyed reading about your trip. Thanks for sharing.
Diane, it is not too late for you to begin writing books. You truly have a gift with words. You touch my heart and you make me smile. You and Dick be so careful with your travels.

I join in sending love, condolences and prayers to Edna and Steve and their families. I had the pleasure of spending some time with Doug when my boys were younger and were involved in the Recreation Dept. ball teams. Doug coached some and always seemed like such a nice young man. Such a heartache....

My love to you all.

Well, I didn't think I'd take time to check in again, but here I sit. The news of Doug Eberhardt's death prompted me to do so, just for a bit.

I never knew Doug, but the little bit that I learned about him through what other people said, tells me he was loved enormously, and that he was a good young man. I surely haven't kept up with Edna or with Steve through the years, but it was good to see them back on that happy September day a year ago. My heart aches for them now, and all my prayers are with them tonight. From what I read on the Caring Bridge site, he lived life with gusto these last several months, and had developed a close relationship with God. I am glad for that.

I'll go again, and will hope to see many of you in about 10 days. For the first time in our lives, we are coming to Athens with no place to stay. Dick's mom's house now has a renter, and his brother Walt is in the middle of major renovations. Guess who didn't know all this? We thought we'd use some Marriott points and at least stay in the Courtyard downtown, but guess what-- a little thing called a ballgame is going on. Now it seems we may be staying, get this, in the "hospitality room" at the nursing facility where Dick's mom is. I knew we'd get there one day, but I didn't expect it to be so soon. Maybe this will be the beginning of a career for me. I'll stay in various nursing homes and then write reviews.

Peace to you all, and special prayers for our friends who grieve.

Anyone getting any rain out there? We've had 4.5 inches here in Marietta just in the last two days!... with more to come! And I don't own a boat.

Good Morning, Jimmy Duck... this is Donald Duck. You know, Liz and I had perfect weather, sunny and seventies on every day of our two-week trip every where we traveled, but we haven't seen the sun shine since we got back to Georgia a week ago! Now about that gopher wood... I don't think you can even find it at the Home Depot. I think Noah used it all up.

Jim, I agree with you - I've already laid the keel! Time for a little Friday Funny:

Norman and his blonde wife live in Calgary. One winter morning while listening to the radio, they hear the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 centimeters of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through." Norman's wife goes out and moves her car.

A week later while they are eating breakfast, the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 10 to 12 centimeters of snow today. You must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through." Norman's wife goes out and moves her car again.

The next week they are having breakfast again, when the radio announcer says "We are expecting 12 to 14 centimeters of snow today. You must park........... " Then the electric power goes out.

Norman's wife is very upset, and with a worried look on her face she says, "Honey, I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snowplow can get through?"

With the love and understanding in his voice like all men who are married to blondes exhibit, Norman says, "Why don't you just leave it in the garage this time?"

Hope you all have a GREAT weekend and HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH - may you have a sweet New Year!!!

I hope all of you... and your family and friends are doing ok out there. We have a real disaster in the making with the continuing rain and flooding. I had measured about 12 inches accumulated in our back yard rain gauge here in Marietta since last Tuesday, but last night it really poured and overran the rain gauge. They are saying that we had from 9" to 15" of rain here in the Marietta area and the west side of Atlanta just over the last 24 hours... with more to come and no end in sight. Take care of yourselves out there folks... and please pray!

If I had my life to live over I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren’t there for the day. I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage. I would have talked less and listened more. I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded. I would have eaten the popcorn in the ‘good’ living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace. I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth. I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed. I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains. I would have cried and laughed less while watching television – and more while watching life. I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband. I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn’t show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime. Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I’d have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle. When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, “Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.” There would have been more “I love yous”… more “I’m sorrys”…but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute… look at it and really see it…live it…and never give it back. — Erma Bombeck

Jimmy,I can tell you live in Uncle Remus territory! Seriously, my heart goes out to you who are being terribly affected by these rains. Don, I hope and pray your home will remain dry, and that goes for everyone else as well. It's crazy! Connie, I know your sons are in the Atlanta area, and I am thinking of them too.

We got to Savannah today and it is actually nice down here. From the sound of things, it may still be raining when we drive back into Greene County Wed., and on into Athens on Thursday.

Oh, we don't have to stay in the nursing home afterall. Dick's niece had her baby this morning in Atlanta, so we are able to stay in Walt and Jann's house (Dick's brother), because they will be with the new grandbaby. It took them over 4 hours to drive from Athens to the hospital this morning due to the mud slide in Stone Mtn. and then all the other interstate closures.

Will go. Our hearts are with you all. Please, please take care.

Love,
Diane

Hello Guys & GAls,
Dick/Diane glad to know you are in Georgia, however, you may get swept away to Florida if the rains continue, but hopefully not. Wow, have ya'll seen such rain since 1994? We have road closures in Middle GA & I know it is much worse in North GA. Watch the water, it is surely dangerous. Can't wait to see all of you again on Sunday. I am bored (in Court) again so it gives me a chance to check in. I mostly read what all of you have wrote and it is means so much. Steve & Edna, May God keep you & your families during this loss of your child. I can only imagine how it feels to give up a child. Just remember God has a bigger plan than we can ever comprehend. Love to all,
Judy

Don, I hope that you and others that have experienced excessive rain are o.k.
Diane and Dick, I know you are enjoying your time in Savannah. Glad you finally made it there.
Jim, your Uncle Remus reference brought back memories. I used to love those stories... I'm afraid that is another bit of history that our children/grandchildren will never hear.... and yes, I can imagine you and Charles Owens on your "adventure".
I am sure looking forward to seeing y'all on Sunday! (glad to hear you will be making the trip Judy)

My Mom used to tell me that there would be days like this. I'm glad they don't come along but once every hundred years or so. What a week!... but we have survived, thus far. Our house is not in a flood plain, but we had so much rain that the ground was totally saturated. There was no where for all the water to go, and it drained onto the lower level of our house (The garage level, with the laundrey room and den). I spent most of the day Monday bailing out buckets full of water, and kept the water out of the den except for one small area. We are exhausted, physically and mentally, but we are truly blessed comapared to many people here in metro Atlanta. What a disaster! Many have lost their homes and everything they own. And some have lost their lives, including a precious two-year old washed away in the flood. No rain yesteday thank goodness, and today looks good thus far. But there is more rain in the forecast later this week and weekend, and the ground can not take any more. Please pray that we get no more rain for now.

Thanks for yur concern Diane, Connie and Judy. I'm not sure if we will be there on Sunday. Look for us if you see us coming. If we ae not there, we will be thinking of you and hope you have a wonderful time!
