Speaking of late night/early morning hours, what happens with me, Gary, is that I sometimes fall asleep on the sofa watching TV. Last night we watched Inspector Lewis solve another murder on Masterpiece Mystery on PBS. Do any of you ever watch those? I love a good mystery, but it is a real challenge sometimes to understand those strong British accents. Those folks need to learn how to speak good English. :-) After that, I fell asleep watching the end of the Phillies/Dodgers Playoff game. The Yankees lost their game last night. Poor babies. Anyway, as often happens, if I fall asleep on the sofa, when I do wake up and go to bed, I have a hard time getting back to sleep… and my mind goes into overdrive. When that happens, I usually have to have a glass of milk to get back to sleep… or as Liz says… “milk for the baby.” Maybe it’s my dairy farm upbringing, but anyway, it seems to work, and I do love milk!

Liz is recovering from her chest pain episode and is still weak and sore. She is doing some research on the internet on “pleurisy” and another condition called “costochondritis.” Anyone ever heard of it? How about you Connie?… you are our resident class nurse.

Diane... hope you have a good trip back to Georgia and hope your sister-in-law is recovering nicely. And, by the way... I do love jambalaya! Yummy!

I’m also loving this sunny, cool Fall weather! I haven’t seen our hummingbirds for a a few days now… maybe they have high-tailed it to South America for their winter vacation. Have a great week everyone!

Don I'm impressed with your desire to watch (and solve, I'm sure) mysteries. Me, I've resigned myself to the simple shows that require no thinking and are totally meaningless, like The Office or Married with Children reruns. They break me up. Yes, give me simplicity. Speaking of which, I've rediscovered Tic-Tac-Toe. I'd forgotten how challenging and fun it can be - especially against a computer. Here, click on this link - (Tic-Tac-Toe) and give it a try! I think you'll be surprised! Hope everyone is having a GREAT day. Later.

WHAT IS LOVE? "When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toe nails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." Rebecca- age 8 "When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth." Billy - age 4 "Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other." Karl - age 5 "Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs." Chrissy - age 6 "Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." Terri - age 4 "Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK." Danny - age 7 "Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss" Emily - age 8 "Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen." Bobby - age 7 (Wow!) "If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate." Nikka - age 6 (we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet) "Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday." Noelle - age 7 "Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." Tommy - age 6 "During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore." Cindy - age 8 "My mommy loves me more than anybody . You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night." Clare - age 6 "Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken." Elaine-age 5 "Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford." Chris - age 7 "Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day." Mary Ann - age 4 "I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones." Lauren - age 4 "When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." (what an image) Karen - age 7 "You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget." Jessica - age 8

Hi Don, I see you are logged in also. Gary, as usual, I'm splitting my sides with laughter. Hope things are going well with all of you out there. My, what beautiful weather the lord is blessing us with. Hope all are enjoying this glorious autumn day.

Gary... I would say that there are a lot of young children out there that have a better idea of what "Love" is than a lot of adults.

By the way... I almost never solve any of those Masterpiece Mysteries before the end of the movie. Inspector Lewis, Wallander, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot... they all have a surprise ending, the least likely suspect. I blame it on the language barrier. I speak American.

I hope everyone is doing well and having a good week. Gary, I was sorry to read that you've been having some painful days! I always enjoy the words of wisdom and funnies you post. Let us know when you are grandpa again!
Don, I hope Liz hasn't had any more episodes of chest pain. That can be very scary.
No news in my little corner.. I did go see Disney on Ice last Sunday afternoon with 2 of the grandchildren and their mom. It was fun.
You all take care and have a good w/e.

Kathy, sounds like you were "surprised"! I hope not too much. I hope everyone has a blessed weekend. Here are a few thoughts to keep you busy. Later. Thoughts to ponder I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes. Garden Rule: When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it was a valuable plant. The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement. Have you noticed since everyone has a camcorder these days no one talks about seeing UFOs like they used to? In the 60’s, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal. Wouldn’t it be nice if whenever we messed up our life we could simply press ‘Ctr- Alt- Delete’ and start all over? Brain cells come and brain cells go, but fat cells live forever. If raising children was going to be easy, it never would have started with something called ‘labor!’ How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire? Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, ‘I think I’ll squeeze these dangly things here and drink whatever comes out?’ Who was the first person to say, ‘See that chicken there? I’m gonna eat the next thing that comes outta its butt.’

10/23/09 01:27 PM #941

Donald Chandler

Very good, Gary. I especially liked the last two... the one about the cow and the "dangly things"... and the one about the chicken and the eggs (by the way... which came first?)

Have a great weekend folks! Liz and I are going to try to come up with something to do tonight besides go to the Emergency Room at the Hospital.

Our Dawgs have the weekend off, and they will need it to play those disgusting Gators next week.

HELLO GUYS!!! Sorry I've kinda been out of touch lately.
With our annual golf trip and all I just haven't taken time to catch up! "Sorry Bout That!" Anyway, hope everyone's been doing well.
Speaking of time, it's really amazing how quickly this year has gone. Baseball's over, no football! (I just can not make myself pull for those "bugs" in Atlanta). Last week I tried to watch their game with VT. Before the game was over I found myself pulling for Virginia! I finally changed the channel to the History Channel!
But, we do have hunting season. Last week I discided to go out and try my luck!
Before the afternoon was over I found myself dozing like some old man. So I climbed down from my stand and sat on the ground and promply fell asleep. I think it was the best hunting trip I've been on in years!!!!
Anyway, I hope you guy have a great weekend! I hear my deer stand call me! See Ya'll Later!
Jim

Good (wet) day one and all! Thought I should check in and try to restart some conversation. The best news I have is that there are only 4 days left in this month! My brother's death, my daughter's wreck and maybe dual torn rotator cuffs. Just one of those bad seasons that come along occasionally that make you want to write a book entitled - "Job Had It Easy!" There is a silver lining in every cloud - its just got to rain itself out first before you can see the lining. Here's a little chuckle for the day that Don should appreciate. Hope everyone has a blessed week. Later.

*********************
There was this haunted house on the outskirts of the town which was avoided by all the townfolk - the ghost which `lived' there was feared by all.

However, an enterprising journalist decided to get the scoop of the day by photographing the fearsome phantom. When he entered the house, armed with only his camera, the ghost descended upon him, clanking chains et al. He told the ghost "I mean no harm - I just want your photograph". The ghost was quite happy at this chance to make the headlines - he posed for a number of ghostly shots.

The happy journalist rushed back to his dark room, and began developing the photos. Unfortunately, they turned out to be black and underexposed.

So what's the moral of the story?

The spirit was willing but the flash was weak.

10/27/09 01:58 PM #944

Diane Harris (Moore)

Wow. I see I have some catching up to do with all the news. Gary, I scanned through the updates, but didn't see details of your daughter's wreck that you mentioned. I'll read more carefully. Whatever they are, I certainly hope all is well with her. I'll be thinking of you as you await your newest little grandchild.

Don, certainly am glad to read that Liz is better, though I know you'd like to know what the heck was going on with those chest pains.

What a week in Georgia I had! It was a little of this and a little of that, and I won't go into the details except to say I was busy. A great niece (the daughter of my niece) was killed in an auto accident in south Georgia, and a cousin passed away while I was home. As always happens, I was able to see so many people at the funeral home in Crawford when I visited. Many people I had not seen since I lived in Enterprise, and we know how long that's been. Even got to see Edd Lowe and Ralph Maxwell. I was with my sister-in-law until Friday, mostly doing cooking, housework, and running errands. No one ever needs my brain, but my hands are in demand. Hmm, why is that?

Friday afternoon I left for Ohio, but not without first having a fun weekend in Blairsville. Teresa Burt Colwell was kind enough to invite me to stopover at her house there, and what do you know? Connie, Nancy, Gail, Judy, and Kathy showed up too! To say we talked and laughed would be like saying Noah experienced a little rain. Oh my goodness! It was a good way to end a rough week. We no doubt left poor Jim and Teresa exhausted, but their beautiful mountain home is a lovely place for them to recover.

I got on the road Sunday morning for what should have been an eight hour trip home. However, I got onto I-40, drove a few miles, and was then commanded by a sign to "get off at the next exit". A rock slide had occurred during the night and closed the interstate. I am sure they have helpful info by now, but at the time, all of us travelers were spilling off into a lonely little service station, trying to figure out what to do. I ended up adding 4 hours to my travel time. On the bright side, the weather was perfect, and the trees were at their peak on the entire way back. I, and what seemed like millions of other folks, motored along and gaped in wonder.

Better go for now. I missed checking in while I was away. Now I need to go back and read more thoroughly, especially the jokes.

'Till later.

Diane, happy to hear you had a safe trip but like many others here, sounds like you will be happy to see October in your rear view mirror. I didn't post about my daughter's accident - maybe when I'm in the mood for a long post - but it was the mother to be on the way to the hospital - because she thought she was in labor. I just happened upon this bit of useful information that most of us could use today and thought it was worth a return visit just to post. So here it is: Strange Umbrellas Later.

Donald Chandler

Greetings Mates,

I’m in a writing mood today. Be warned.

I fixed dead chicken for supper. Translation: I cooked baked chicken wings (one of my favorites) for our evening meal... along with turnip greens, boiled rice and tropical fruit for dessert. Yummo! Not bad, even if I did cook it myself.

Diane… I’m very sorry to hear that your trip to Georgia was interrupted with the sad loss of your great-niece and a cousin. It is especially difficult when the life of one so young ends far too soon. I do hope your sister-in-law is recovering well from her surgery. By the way… Liz is better but is still short of breath and very tired… and you are right… not knowing what is the cause of it all is somewhat maddening. I was happy to hear that you enjoyed a nice reunion with six other female OCHS classmates while you were here. I would speculate as to whether or not this group might be the legendary “sexy seven” that I have heard rumours of, but I think I could get in trouble… again. So... Never mind!

You certainly did have a rough month there Gary. I was surprised too to hear about your daughter’s car wreck. Is she ok? And my condolences again on the loss of your brother. That’s a tough one.

Good to see you back on the forum, Jim. Looks like when you go hunting, and I watch late night baseball on TV, we accomplish the same thing… A GOOD NAP! And “no”, we are not old men! By the way… I’m still not done with baseball. I just have to watch the World Series, even though I would love to see both teams lose. I guess I will hold my nose and pull for the Phillies. I just can’t root for the Yanks. And I do understand how you feel about the Yellow Jackets. I am one of very few Dawg fans who pulls for Georgia Tech too… only because I invested over two years of my life at Tech. But when Georgia plays Tech, I am a full-blooded Bulldog. Tech does have a good team, and I’d love to see them win the rest of their games, except for the Georgia game. Go Dawgs! By the way… did anyone notice that our game this Saturday against Florida is on Halloween? Pretty scary!

Connie… how was Disney on Ice? I know it used to be a very good show. I remember going to see it with Liz and Ron at the old Omni arena just a couple of months after we were married in 1982. The star of the show then was Linda Fratiannne, one of the Winter Olympic Medal Winners. Did they have any Olympic stars in the 2009 version?

Has anyone seen any good movies lately? Liz and I want to see “Amelia” but it may be a few weeks before we get to. We saw “The Time Traveler’s Wife” over the weekend… not bad, but not great either… interesting concept, but a little confusing at times. We then went to Walmart, and I found three good DVDs in the five dollar bargain bin… 1-“The Old Man and the Sea”, the 1958 screen version of Hemingway’s classic with Spencer Tracy (I haven’t watched it yet – have any of you seen it?)… 2-“Driving Miss Daisy”, the GREAT movie with Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman (I’ve seen it a couple of times - just wanted to have my own copy)… and 3-“Elizabeth”, the 1998 film on the early reign of Queen Elizabeth I. (I loved it, but then again, I’m a history nut). Last night, we were looking for something on TV and just had to watch this 1971 mystery movie called “Chandler” with Warren Oates. How could I resist? If you ever have the opportunity to see it… don’t bother. Great title, but it is a complete waste of time. By the way… I see on Fox News today that there is a story about this British couple that have been kidnapped and their yacht hijacked by pirates off the Somalia Coast. The couple’s name… the Chandlers. I didn’t realize the Chandler name was so common. In case you are wondering, my Chandler ancestors are from England, but… no relation that I know of. I have no family that owns a yacht.

Well, I’m writing too much again. But it’s more fun than anything on TV tonight. Enjoy the rest of your week, mates!

Okay, time for the accident story. Please jump to the next entry if you get bored.
Tuesday was a week ago, our daughter Erin started having contractions 5 minutes appart - the first sign that its time to head for the hospital. She didn't want to go but with prodding from momma and a call to the doctor, she decided she should head that way. Sherron went to Erin and JJ's house to watch Jackson. I headed toward their house after work to have dinner with Sherron and Jackson and to await the arrival of little Julianna. I was headed out North Avenue when I got a call from a VERY upset Erin saying they had just been in a wreck on Hawthorne in front of the Y while enroute to the hospital - it was about 5:00 PM. I turned around and headed in that direction while trying to figure out the best route to take, given the gridlock that can occur at that time of day. I was able to get within about 50 yards of the accident and into a parking lot. There was a fire truck, an ambulance and 4 or 5 police vehicles on the scene. As I walked up to the accident, expecting to see Erin in the ambulance I saw Andy Dawson (some of you might know him - a fireman) on the scene. He informed me that Erin had no visible injuries but had already been transported to St. Mary's since she was possibly in labor. I inquired if someone in the other car had been injured - the reason for the second ambulance. No, the passenger in the second car was 7 1/2 months pregnant and she was being prepped for transport to Regional Hospital as a precaution. No physical injuries in the three car accident - however the third car fled the scene, even though he didn't cause the accident. Turns out the car that hit Erin and JJ was coming in the opposite direction, turning into the Y behind them and was struck by the now missing third car. The impact cause him to make a 270 and slam into the side of Erin and JJ as they were at a complete stop. The police and firemen were FANTASTIC helping me gather up all of their belonging before the wreckers came to haul the vehicles away. I headed on over to St. Mary's expecting to see my new granddaughter but discovered that her contractions had stopped - probably as a result of the accident. Erin spent the night at the hospital, with JJ at her side, just to make sure everything was normal. She was released 24 hours after the accident and here we are one week later, still waiting. We anticipate a call at any minute but most of the money is on sometime this weekend.
Since, I'm in a writing mood - We were down at my brother's house on Saturday trying to make some repairs to his pump house. I was up on a ladder trying to throw a roll of plastic across the roof. As I leaned back to give it the old heave ho, my shoulder went rip, snap. I don't know how I got down the ladder but spent the next few minutes running through the woods praising the Lord and trying to get my shoulder to work again. We were able to complete what we set out to do but my right arm was sore to say the least. Spent most of Saturday night with an ice pack on it. Sunday my range of motion was much better but still painful - as was my left shoulder. Don't know how or when I hurt it. Self diagnosis and Web MD indicate probable rotator cuff tears. Been there, done that before. More ice and start exercises as soon as the pain subsides. Today the brusing on my right shoulder is starting to really set in and the tattoo of Sherron is starting to look more like Michelle Obama.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Hope everyone is having a blessed week. Later.

10/28/09 11:51 AM #949

Diane Harris (Moore)

Poor Gary! I am sorry about your shoulder injury, and hope it miraculously heals. The line about the tattoo was very funny! Glad you are able to find some humor amidst it all.

Also, the story about your daughter's wreck was a wild one. Truth really is stranger than fiction! So very glad she is OK. We will now look forward to a proud announcement soon.

That's all. Just wanted to let you know I read every word. : ) No more rooftops, please!

10/28/09 02:46 PM #950

Gary Grice

Thanks Diane. I hate to hog the forum but when I run across something that's as good as this, I can't resist sharing. Its a lesson I need to learn everyday. Later. ********* It’s all in how you say it… A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?” The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.” I wrote: “Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it.” Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective? Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative.. Think differently and positively. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.

Hello friends:
It has been a busy, *^%) week @ work... Is it a full moon??
Gary, SO glad your daughter (and grandbaby) are o.k. That had to be such a frightening time. I also hope that your shoulder heals quickly.
Don, Disney on Ice was very good. My first time to go. It was beautiful. I enjoyed watching my grandchildren's faces as much as I did the show.
I too am hoping that all of the UGA players actually "show-up" this week-end and that we'll pull an upset!
I hope you all have a good w/e.

10/30/09 11:19 AM #953

Donald Chandler

I fell asleep last night watching the Yankees beat the Phillies. I might as well have been hunting with Jim.

Sorry you had a #@$&%! week there Connie. But always remember... "the sun will come out tomorrow". Actually, I think it's supposed to rain again tomorrow... let me revise that... "the sun will come out next week". With rain tomorrow, and Halloween too, I guess it is the perfect environment for Georgia football fans this weekend. Expectations are pretty low. Not only is Georgia playing the best team in college football tomorrow, but the Falcons are playing the best team in the NFL (the New Orleans Saints) on Monday Night Football. It could be a very bad football weekend... or very good if we could pull a couple of upsets!!! And they would be really big upsets!

Have a great weekend folks... win or lose! And don't forget to turn back your clocks and enjoy an extra hour of sleep. :-)

Hello everyone!
Don't knock the "sleep hunting" Don! It's really great!!! I might even try it
tomarrow afternoon (if things don't go well in Jacksonville)!!! But you know,
I got this feeling guys> Just may be something to pay attention to!!!
You never know, after all it is Spookie Day!!!!!
Have a great weekend! I hope you all get nothing
but treats!!

Connie, you did not use to use such language! My eyes are burning! : )

Uh, I don't have anything intelligent to say, so.....hey, wait! It's our class forum, and I don't have to say anything intelligent! YAY!

It is in the 70s right now, and hot on the west side of the house that I just left. Dick took off a bit early, and we have (well, HE ) been cloroxing the multitude of gourds I grew this summer. Big gourds, medium ones, round ones, long neck ones--too many. Me and my harebrained ideas. Anyway, i told him I needed a potty break, and would be back in 5 minutes. That was 15 minutes ago, and I don't think he's noticed. Probably enjoying the silence.

Y'all have a good weekend. Jim, Don, and Gary, I hope you get to squeeze some guy fun in there somewhere while you're doing all those "honey do's". I'm sure you do them, right? Again, Connie, clean up that language. I do not want to read anymore asterisks from you! Nancy, you too!

Don't forget to set them thar' clocks back. Happy extra witching hour!

Hugs.

11/02/09 08:46 AM #956

Gary Grice

NOTHING INTELLIGENT?!?! OH YEAH WELL....
Darn I wish I had an intellignet come back.
Yeah, I got to do lots of GUY stuff. Spent most of Friday night at St. Mary's Maternity just to be put on hold - again. Hopefully sometime this week we'll welcome little Julianna into this world. In the mean time, everything is on hold. Yes, Connie there is a full moon. I've got to go find something intelligent to post, just to impress Diane. Hope everyone has a blessed week. Later.

Morning Folks! Gary I suppose you guys are still
waiting! Sure hope they are doing well. My oldest
daughter is a R.N. at the Medical Center in Macon,
in labor and delivery. She says that sometimes it
seems that these little ones take forever to get
here. Just hang in there buddy!
As most of you know, I had been getting my naps of
late out back of my home in a deer stand. Well last
night Beth and I had to run into town to take care
of a few things around 5:00 P.M. Anyway we finished
around 6 and started home. We started up our driveway
and I was just starting to park the Yukon when the
largest 8 point buck I've seen in sometime tried
to run me over. What I'm trying to say is I've got
a new nap location. I can now set in the rocking
chair on my front porch! Man, an't the Lord good!
It was getting old climbing that stand.
I hope all you folks have as blessed a week as
you can stand. I'm going hunting.
Later
Jim

11/02/09 02:13 PM #958

Diane Harris (Moore)

Gary, you obviously misinterpreted my comment about me not needing to say anything intelligent on this website. It's clear that you, Don, Jim, and others speak loftily of politics, religion, travels, etc., but I know that no such topics are not expected from me, 'cause, well....you know. I look forward to Gary's next intellectual post, and I hope I catch on. (tee hee, tee hee)

Gary, sorry your hospital wait was for naught, but that darling little miss just wants to make her entrance at the appropriate time. We will look very forward to pictures! We'll be praying for her's and mama's well-being.

Jimmy, why'd you go and tell about your new deer huntin' place? Don't you know that now you're gonna have all the deer hunters who read this parking their tails on your front porch now? I can picture it now. Check those rockers for squeaks so as to not scare that big buck off.

Well, Gary, hope you're satisfied. Another half hour wasted here in Ohio, and all because I stopped by the computer on my way to transfer Dick's underwear from the washer to the dryer. Now I'm behind in my Monday errands. I have to get out of here and go buy enough ingredients to serve 50 or 60 folks chicken tetrazzini this Wed. night. (Gary, notice the big, foreign word, which makes my entry sound somewhat intelligent)

All my love, me.
