Diane, you missed the point! I really don't care
if I get a deer! The nap part is the important
part. If I get one I'll have to get up and take
it to be processed. That will take all afternoon.
I will have wasted a perfect chance to get my nap.
And by the time I get back Beth will have found
something for me to do. So---- squeak on baby!!!

Happy Tuesday everyone. I just received an email from Sandra Brown (Davis), Class of 1970. She had some pictures and a tribute to Charles Owens that I have now posted to his profile. Warning, grab a tissue before you read the tribute. I hope everyone is having a blessed week. Later.

HEY - TOO QUIET AROUND HERE! So I thought a little laughter might liven things up.
**********
A couple go for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and order the 'Chicken Surprise'.

The waiter brings the meal, served in a lidded cast iron pot. Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid of the pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady little eyes looking around before the lid slams back down.

'Good grief, did you see that?' she asks her husband. He hasn't, so she asks him to look in the pot. He reaches for it and again the lid rises, and he sees two little eyes looking around before it slams down.

Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains what is happening, and demands an explanation.

'Please sir,' says the waiter, 'what you order?'

The husband replies, 'Chicken Surprise.'

'Ah! So sorry,' says the waiter, 'I bring you Peeking Duck'.

Later.

Gary, that was funny. It met all the criteria for what makes a good joke for me. It was clean, it involved food, and most important of all, I caught on!

Next, thanks for posting the touching memorial that was passed on to you that honored our old friend, Charles Owens. Seeing his face brought back all the good memories that I associate with him.

Better go. Just so you know, I have a little arthroscopic procedure being done this Friday morning on my knee to repair/remove a torn meniscus. It's not a big deal, and many of you have had many more and much more serious surgeries. However, it's MY first one, and MY first general anesthesia, so it's monumental to me. Please send out some "good vibes" (keeping with our 60s theme), on Monday for me. Hopefully, by this time next year I can resume my position with the Rockettes. I probably kicked too high during last year's performances. May be time for me to slow down.

Bunches o' hugs.

The weather in Georgia could not be more perfect… sunshine and 60’s/70’s all week. After all that rain the last couple of months, we deserve it!

A few days ago Liz and I attended a funeral for the son of a friend from church… a Military Graveside Service for a Navy Veteran complete with Navy Honor Guard and US Flag Ceremony. I had never been to such a service before, and I must say that it is a very moving, emotional ceremony… especially to hear “Taps” played by the Navy bugler. It is a sobering reminder that we should be grateful for the commitment of all of the men and women who have served and are currently active in the American Armed Services. Veterans Day next week would be good time to remember and be thankful. May God bless them all.

Diane... I actually did get one of those "honey do" tasks completed Saturday... I dressed up in my plumber's costume again and repaired another toilet. I must say it was actually more fun than the Georgia/Florida game that followed. I guess there is no barking from us Dawg fans this week… but I will say this. Georgia needs some changes made, and I don’t mean “black” helmets. We need more than gimmicks. The truth is that Florida is a very good team, and very well coached, and Georgia is not a very good team, and we are not very well coached. The truth hurts. Maybe we will be a little more competitive this week against Tennessee TECH! Aren’t they on the OCHS schedule too?

OK… the baseball season is almost over. If those @#&$% Yankees win tonight they will win their gazillenth World Series. But I’m a baseball fan, so I guess I’ll tune in after I get home from church. Maybe I can clean up my language by then. An added note… every year when the baseball season is finally over, my sweet Liz sings the “hallelujah” chorus just for me.

Gary… keep us posted on the grand entrance of that next grandchild. And thanks too for the profile update on Charles. He was good one.

Hey Jim… hope you enjoyed the hunting during the Georgia game Saturday. To be honest, I haven’t been hunting since I was a teenager on the farm. I don’t even own a gun now (don’t tell anyone). But… I think I like your style of hunting… in a chair on the front porch. I didn’t realize it, but I guess I’ve been doing the same thing when I doze off on my back porch watching for critters. Happy Hunting, Jim! Zzzzz.

Diane… I will say a prayer for you and the surgical procedure on your knee. By the way… I just bought tickets for the upcoming Radio City Christmas Spectacular at the Fox Theater coming up during the holidays. I kid you not. So you are telling me that you may not be able to be there and dance with the Rockettes? Say it ain’t so!

Diane Harris (Moore)

Don, it depends on how my therapy goes, and if they can/cannot conceal my scars. If I make it back to the lineup at the Fox, I'll be easy to spot. You can take that to the bank. : ) Oh, and I don't know why I referenced "Monday" in that last post. It happens Friday, but I'll take prayers any day of any week.

Gary Grice

Somebody go wake up Jim and tell him its time to go to work! And Don, I guess baseball season is officially over - Sorry. I watched the Georgia-Florida disaster also. I was more impressed with Florida's luck than their playing skills. Of course the lack of head work by Georgia helped a lot. I think the Dawgs have some talented players but like Cox, they aren't playing smart. I don't know if that coaching, inexperience or ????. Just looked like some not so smart plays and reactions.
Diane, I will keep you in my prayers as you undergo your knee surgery. Please let us know how it goes. I've had that knee thing done twice and it really wasn't too bad either time. Just annoying trying to get around for a few weeks.
My first experience was really rather amusing - after the fact. I had just finished running a 5K for the Captain's Cup competition at the Dam Neck Navy Base and was walking over to the check out table when I heard something in my knee go PING and a little discomfort set in as I took my next step. I rocked along for several months and several visits to the ortho clinic before they decided that I needed surgery. I reported into the Portsmouth Naval Hospital on the assigned day at 0'dark thirty as ordered and went through all of the preparation which include starting an IV. After a while they wheeled me down to the surgery waiting area which was a BIG room where EVERYONE was lined up in a holding pattern. I don't know how they decided who would go first but I must have lost. I lay there for HOURS awaiting my turn and you know that fluid from an IV is like drinking a LOT of water. It wasn't long before I had to summon a nurse for one of those little bottles - and again - and again. Needless to say, any relaxing drugs they may have given me were flushed from my system. Finally, my turn arrived - I think I was the last person in that BIG holding room. In the service you don't have one doctor, you are assigned to a team. The anaesthesiologist (2) came over to administer the spinal which I had elected so I could watch the procedure on TV. That sounded cool to me. One anaesthesiologist positioned himself in front of me as I rolled over on my side with my knees drawn up while the other proceeded to insert the needle into my spine. When he stuck me my knees unbent and I nearly kicked the anaesthesiologist I was facing across the room. As they both recovered, one asked the other, "Didn't you give him something to relax?" "No. Didn't you?" So into my IV goes some happy juice. The next thing I remember was waking up with a crowd of people looking at me - thought maybe it was my funeral. No, it was a tour of doctors, nurses, garbagemen passing through. The surgery was complete and they were closing up. I MISSED THE WHOLE THING!!! So off to my room I go. No need to stop in recovery since I'm awake NOW! The nurse wheels me up next to my bed and says, "Now scoot your butt over here onto the bed." After a valiant effort I said, "The butt bone is connected to the thigh bone and the thigh bone is connected to the knee bone and they're all DEAD!" Strangest feeling I have every had. EVERYTHING and I do mean EVERYTHING from the waist down was DEAD!! Later that night as EVERYTHING returned to normal, I was released and Sherron took me home. Next morning I awoke with a KILLER headache - just like the ones I'd heard about from others that had had a spinal. A call to the ortho clinic offered two suggestions. (1) Return to the clinic where they would draw some blood and then inject it into my spine where the blood apparently functions like radiator stop leak. Or (2) drink LOTS of coffee and remain as inactive as possible. Although #2 sounded like an oxymoron, it had more appeal than another needle in the spine. Two pots of coffee later and countless trips to the bathroom - on crutches, the headache was gone. During a follow-up appointment, I asked the doctor when I would be able to dance. He said "In a week or two." I said, "That's amazing. I've never been able to dance before!" Trust me, it was a lot funnier than I can truly relate. Diane, I hope your surgery goes well and you will make it to the stage in Atlanta. The show just won't be the same without you, I'm sure!!!
I hope everyone has a BLESSED rest of the week. Later.

Hi friends:
I sure do enjoy keeping up with you on this message forum. I read it every day.
Diane, prayers are being lifted for you especially today. I hope the knee surgery is going well and that you have great results. Dick, I'm sure you are taking good care of her.
Gary, are you grandpa again? I am so glad that all were o.k. after the auto accident! How's your shoulder doing?
Poor Don and Jim - are you suffering withdrawal from baseball??
I've been busy with work and also trying to empty my parents house. Even tho they both died in 1997, I have still had a good bit of stuff just stored there. I am hoping to get everything out and some old carpet pulled up this w/e. This has been a long, hard job (and sometimes sad), but I do hope to finish up the cleaning out by Sunday. I'm having work done on it , and hope to rent it...
You all have a good week-end. Diane, recover quickly.

Thank you Lord for this beautiful earth, this beautiful weather and for friends!
love you,
connie

GOOD MORNING FOLKS!! WAKE UP! ITS A GREAT FALL DAY!
ANYWHO, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BENNY! HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD
ONE!
DIANE HOPE YOUR SURGERY WAS A SUCCESS. LOOKS LIKE
DICK WOULD LET US KNOW YOU'RE O.K. I MEAN DICK!!!!

I REALLY WANTED TO TELL ALL YOU GENTS AND LADIES
THAT SERVED IN OUR ARMED SERVICES. HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE YOUR GIFT TO US! ALSO PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS
OUR BROTHER AND SISTER WHO SERVED THAT ARE NO LONGER
WITH US. I FIND AS TIME MARCHES ON MY THOUIGHTS
TURNING TO THEM MORE AND MORE EACH DAY. BUT, I FIND IT MORE SO AT VETERANS DAY. SO IF YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A TRAIN STATION, IN A AIRPORT OR ANYWHERE, IF YOU MEET UP WITH A YOUNG MAN OR LADY IN UNIFORM, JUST TELL THEM NOW MUCH YOU APPRECIATE THEM. THEY ARE GIVING MORE THAN SOME OF US WILL EVER KNOW TO SERVE FOR US. ITS SO DANGER0US TODAY IN THIS WORLD OF OURS. AND MORE ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF YEAR. LETS REMEMBER THEY'RE HAVING TO BE AWAY FROM THEIR HOME AND LOVE ONES. PLEASE SAY A VERY SPECIAL PRAYER FOR THEM EVERYDAY. BELEIVE ME IT MEANS MORE THAN I COULD EVER EXPRESS TO YOU. I REMEMBER THIS SHORT PRAYER THAT WAS GIVEN TO US ONE MORNING JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS WHILE I WAS IN NAM. IT HELPED LIFT ME
UP. I KNOW YOU'VE HEARD IT MANY MANY TIMES. IT'S SHORT BUT SAID TO ME EVERYTHING. I'D LIKE TO GIVE IT TO YOU.

"I PRAY THE GREAT GOD OF THE UNIVERSE LOOK DOWN, SMILE, PICK YOU UP AND KEEP YOU SAFE!"

ALWAYS,
JIM

Hello Folks.

Diane... I too hope you are doing well in your recovery. I did see a Facebook post from your "Boy Friday" that you came through the surgery fine and are confined to 72 hour bedrest by your doctor... and cannot get to the computer. May God touch you with His healing hand for a complete and speedy recovery.

Jim... DITTO to your comments on our Veterans!!! I could not have said it better than you did. I love the prayer!

Connie... I'll be thinking about you cleaning out your parents home. I know it has to be difficult... physically and emotionally. Be sure to keep the good memories.

And by the way Connie... I guess I do have a little withdrawal with the end of the baseball season. I do love the Boys of Summer! I sing "Hallelujah" every spring when the season begins, and Liz sings "Hallelujah" when the season ends. But I do enjoy the football season too, all sports for that matter... although I'm not a big basketball fan until the NCAA tournament comes around in March. And I always look forward to the Olympics. I think the Winter Games are coming in February.

Liz and I had company this week. One of my nieces and her friend were in town earlier in the week and we treated them to lunch. And Thursday night, one of Liz's first cousins and her husband came in from Louisville and spent the night. They are a barrel of fun! We took them out to dinner at the Marietta Fish Market, and we all ate too much good seafood! Yummo!

Well, I'm avoiding the "honey-do" list today and killing time on the computer. Guess I'll check out the Georgia/Tennessee Tech game in a while. Is it on TV?

Have a great weekend everyone. Reporting live from sunny Marietta, this is Don.

Dick has brought his laptop to me, so I can catch up with things. I can't imagine a happier message than the first one from you, Gary. Congratulations, Gramps! A beautiful name, for a beautiful little girl, I'm sure. Looking forward to the pics.

Love reading all your recent entries about baseball, etc., surgeries, and Jim, especially your poignant views of our military men and women. Especially in light of upcoming Veteran's Day, and also after the awful event at Ft. Hood last week.

I'm doing well, and I thank you for your kinds well wishes and prayers. I am staying in bed 'till tomorrow, when I can take off my bandage and take a shower. I have ice water circulating around my knee from a little cooler that sits on the floor. Poor Dick. He has been my Boy Friday, all right, and I am afraid payback is going to be rough. I am reminded why I thought he was such a nice guy all those years ago. I started off feeling like the Queen of Sheba, sitting in my big bed, surrounded by favorite magazines and books, and with the candle Gail gave me burning on the table next to me. After two days and three big meals being brought in by my Yankee church friends, I am feeling more like Jabba the Hut (sp?) One even brought peach pie! Dick even brought up a coffee urn so I could have "coffee on tap" to satisfy my addiction, so I am pretty comfortable.Of course, the vicodin helps too. I just hope they were able to do my knee work without marring it too much. Fortunately, due to my work with the Rockettes, my legs are heavily insured.

Better go, and get back to whatever it is I can find to do here in my bedroom kingdom. My love to each of you, and I sincerely hope you are all well and enjoying the nice weather. Dick told me that I sure am missing a pretty weekend up here, too. Drat!

Oh, Connie, I know you're working hard on your mom and daddy's house. I know that house holds lots of good memories for me, so I can only imagine how many they hold for you.

Diane, so glad to hear you are on the mend. I'll bet Dick has already been more than adequately compensated for any services he may provide. I hope he relishes this opportunity to "pay back" for all you have done for him. Men, listen up!! God knew what he was doing when he created our help mates. I thank him for mine everyday. I think I'm awake now - Julianna was born on Saturday, November 7th at 11:15. She is a beautiful little bundle of joy. I started to take off today for their arrival at home but since big brother Jackson is going to have a bit of adjusting to do since the universe will no longer revolve around him, I thought I should not add to the mix. I've got to get caught up on some things here at work but will try to get back into the routine as the week rolls on. In the mean time, I've posted a few pictures on my Profile page. I hope everyone has a blessed week! Later.

Just time for a quick Blonde Joke:

A blonde tried to sell her old car. She was having a lot of problems selling it,because the car had almost 230,000 miles on it.

One day, she told her problem to a brunette she worked with at a salon.

The brunette told her, "There is a possibility to make the car easier to sell, but it's not legal."

"That doesn't matter," replied the blonde, "if I only can sell the car."

"Okay," said the brunette. "Here is the address of a friend of mine. He owns a car repair shop. Tell him I sent you and he will 'fix it'. Then it should not be a problem to sell your car anymore."

The following weekend, the blonde made the trip to the mechanic.

About one month after that, the brunette asked the blonde, "Did you sell your car?"

"No," replied the blonde, "Why should I? It only has 50,000 miles on it!"

Later.

Congratulations grandpa Gary!!! From the pictures I see she is a beautiful little girl!! The rest of the family is looking good too!

You keep on getting better Diane. Hope that when you are up and around it is painless. I know that Dick did a good job meeting your every need.

Don, now that baseball is over, you could jump on the NASCAR bandwagon for their last couple of races. I know, I know - who wants to watch cars go around in a circle? that is what I used to think too until just a few years ago. Went to a race in Atlanta with a group of friends, and have really enjoyed it since. It helps to be "pulling for" one of the drivers - so you can join me in pulling for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. I like him and he says "mam" and "sir" to people. (I think some people hold who his dad was against him - like it is his fault he isn't his dad) I didn't even watch it back when Earnhardt Sr. was living, so I am pretty much a "newcomer".

Jim, you and tarbaby stay dry. I loved Uncle Remus stories! and Amen to your words about veterans. In cleaning out things in my parents house, I found my daddy's army discharge papers. think I will frame them.

You all take care and stay in touch. Would love to hear from anyone else too that has a chance to write.

love,
connie

Yuck! What a messy day. Good day for sitting in Jim's deer stand (porch) and sipping hot coffee as Bambi romps across the yard. Diane, can we borrow your urn?
I figured its about time for a good laugh, so here you go. Later.
*********
While a Texan was busily preparing for the first day of deer hunting season, his wife started nagging that he never asked her to go along. After several hours of argument the wife won.

That next morning they drove out to the country, and he placed his wife in a tree about 100 yards from his blind. Just as the hunter reached the blind, he heard a loud bang coming from the wife's position.

As he ran up to her, he saw that she was holding her gun on a man nearby and shouting, "It's my deer! Get away from It!!

The sheepish-looking stranger just nodded slowly and said, "OK, lady.. It's your deer. Just let me get my saddle off of it!"

Greetings all.

We have had a rough week here at our house. Liz has been very sick since Friday with flu-like symptoms... fever, chills, aches, pains, no appetite, shortness of breath, fatigue, etc. She hasn't been resting well at night either, and so I haven't been resting well at night. I took her to her doctor Monday and he feels like it is the flu and could possibly be the H1N1 Virus. He said there is no way to tell for sure without sending out for extensive tests and the treatment is pretty much the same as it is for regular flu anyway. She is taking TamiFlu and Tylenol with plenty of liquids. We both had the regular Seasonal Flu shots a few weeks back… she got hers from her doctor and I got mine at my local Kroger Pharmacy. I am not feeling the best either, and not resting well. I have a bit of a sore throat myself, and I'm not sure if I will be going to church tonight. I certainly don't want to pass anything on to any other folks.

Hope you all made it through another flood. Hurricane Ida was a bit unkind, and “Ida” was my sweet Grandmother’s name. Jim… we did not have eight inches of rain but we did have almost four inches in the rain gauge at our house yesterday… too much for a single day, especially after we have had so much the last month or so. The ground just won’t dry out. I think I liked the drought better but God is in control… which is a good thing.

Diane… good to hear that you are on the mend. Maybe Dick can give me some good pointers on being a good "Boy Friday" for Liz.

Congratulations on the new grandbaby, Gary. Nice photos.

Connie… I have only been to a couple of auto races, and only one on a big track… the one at Bristol, Virginia. I really tried to enjoy it, but I must admit it was a bit boring to me, seeing the “cars go round and round.” But hey, I know a lot of people are bored by baseball, and I love it. We all have our preferences I guess. I will say that auto racing is more exciting watching it live than it is on TV. By the way, ice hockey is another sport I cannot get into. I went to a couple of Atlanta Flame games many years ago, and I must admit it is better to see it live than on TV too.

I too would like to salute the men and women of our armed forces, past and present, on Veterans Day.

Have a good "hump day" everyone and enjoy the rest of your week. Reporting live from a very wet Marietta, this is Don.

Happy Hump Day INDEED! Hopefully the rest of the week will clear up and be nice and sunny. I love cool fall days and hearing the leaves crunch beneath my feet. One of those simple things that makes living good. Thus, a nice segway into todays bit of wisdom. I found this list online and thought you all or ya'll might enjoy adding to: What are your simple pleasures? Gazing at the flames of a camp fire, poking the burning logs with a stick. Sleep with a LOT of pillows + blankets on a cold, rainy day … oh yeah, and with a girl/guy (we have to be PC!) Gazing at the stars after a great night with friends Scratching behind a dogs ears. Clean sheets Thunderstorms New Socks Lying in bed while it’s raining Going home for the weekend and getting looked after like I’m still a child I love sitting outside in silence. I could stay out there for hours. Bonfire with good friends and good beer on a crisp fall night with a clear sky. Driving home in a snowstorm Driving a sports car on a windy road Sticking my hand in my pants while sitting down. Like Al Bundy. I'm posting some more pictures of one of my simple pleasures. Hope everyone is having a blessed day and will GET WELL SOON! Later.

Diane Harris (Moore)

Oh, Don, I am so sad that Liz is sick, and that you are not feeling too great yourself. If I ruled the world nice people would always feel wonderful, and only mean, grumpy folks would have bad days. However, God is doing a MUCH better job than I would, and bad days help us appreciate the good ones. I do pray you'll both be feeling better soon.

Gary, what a cute little baby girl. I just wanted to reach through the computer screen and "cootche-cootche-coo" her. I also loved almost all of your simple pleasures. I never learned to like beer, and I don't like to drive in snow storms, and I just don't understand the hands in the pockets one. But the rest were totally me.

Jim, I hope you have remained dry. I have heard how much rain you've had down there. But it does make for good soup weather. Connie, why didn't you tell me you were a fan of NASCAR? The interesting things we learn about our friends, just when we thought we knew it all.

I'm doing OK. Dick has gone to Wed. Bible study, but I didn't try it. I'll go back to the doctor tomorrow where I hope to get a gold star for good behavior. I am still amazed by the anesthesia part. I was very anxious about it, for I had never been put to sleep before (well, not by medicine), and am now very curious as to just how it works. I am vigilantly checking in with You Tube to make sure some clip doesn't show up of me saying something obscene or ridiculous while in my stupor.

Better go. Don, I know you are being a great Guy Friday for Liz. All it takes is love, and I know that comes naturally to you.

God bless our veterans.
Love,
Me

Happy Friday the 13th everyone! To be honest, I don’t buy into all the superstitious stuff. It’s just another Friday, and Friday is good! And this happens to be a sunny Friday here. Hallelujah!

Liz was doing a little better yesterday, but still has a long way to go. Not much appetite yet. Or maybe it's just my cooking. When she went to the doctor Monday, he ordered blood work and a chest x-ray. The x-ray revealed a mild "infiltrate of the lining of the lungs", a bacterial infection for which she has been prescribed a very strong antibiotic for the next 10 days. It has some significant side effects too, so please pray that this will take care of her problem. I felt better Wednesday night myself, so I went to Bible Study. But I was sniffling and sneezing yesterday. The good news… I have no fever... I just took my temperature 15 minutes ago and it was 98.4. And I'm not showing the same symptoms that Liz has. For me it's mostly sinus congestion right now.

I hope I feel well tomorrow… a small group of some of my former coworkers when I worked for the City of Atlanta (1973-1979) are having a little reunion lunch at Mary Mac’s Tea Room on Ponce de Leon Avenue here in Atlanta. I really have been looking forward to it. I haven’t seen most of these folks in 30 years. It should be fun. Are any of you familiar with Mary Mac’s? It is a great place to have good ole Southern Home Cooking… all the stuff your mama used to make, including fried green tomatoes. Mary Mac’s has a great reputation for attracting the rich and the poor, the famous and the infamous, everyone from politicians to entertainment celebrities. Their pictures are posted all over the place on the walls. If I feel well tomorrow and have no fever, I think I will go to the reunion lunch.

And then I’ll probably watch the Georgia/Auburn game tomorrow night on ESPN. I sure hope they can cut down on those mistakes… the penalties and turnovers. If they can do that and get the rushing game going, it should be a good game. Go Dawgs! And…(just for you , Connie)… Go Dale Jr.! Yes, mam!

Hope you are still recovering well Diane. Thanks for your kind words. I will be sure to let you know if I see any #&%$@ video clips of you on YouTube.

Let me add one more item for today… I was just reading a story that a friend passed along to us over the internet about life, and about fulfilling God’s purpose for our lives. The story ended with this thought: “Life shouldn’t be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather, to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly shouting, ‘Wow! What a ride!’”

Have a great ride this weekend everyone. Reporting live from Marietta, with no black cats in sight… this is Don.
