Ooh, Connie, I am SO thankful Kyle was not more critically injured by that awful chainsaw encounter! How frightening!

Gary, I think you make every day "humor month" for us, and we appreciate it. : ) Hope all your appts. go well. These tuneups are necessary, I suppose.

Oh, fellow coffee lovers, remember that tomorrow Starbucks will be dispensing free brewed coffee for anyone bringing in a travel mug. There. That's my tip for the day.

Off to the trenches.

Hello Guys & Gals,
Wow, there seems to be several more of us using the message forum these days. I have been a slacker at communicating with ya'll (but actually like "a cat chasing my tail" much of the time). It was such a l-o-n-g c-o-l-d winter. I'll take the pollen for a while just to get some nice weather.
Here's wishing all that have enjoyed their 60th birthday a blessed and wonderful year. If it gets any better, I won't be able to stand it.
I enjoyed the company of Liz Fountain @ High Falls State Park (where we camp host) on Sunday afternoon. She had Isabella (age 3) and Joseph (age 2) with her. She and her two and myself and two of mine, Russ (age 4) and Audrey (age 2), just played and played and played. It was such fun.
So, have we decided when our next reunion will be and where?
Praise the Lord, we got our taxes filed on 4/10/10. Many think we were late filing, but really we were 5 days early.
MAY GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU ALL TIL WE MEET AGAIN.
Always,
Judy

DIANE, A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY--- DOES ANYONE REMEMBER
WHERE THE SAYING, BACK TO THE TRENCHES, CAME FROM?
HAVE A GREAT DAY FOLKS!

Okay Jim, I'll bite. What is the origin of the term "back to the trenches"? Inquiring minds want to know.
Another glorious day here in the Classic City! I hate to spoil it with "potty talk" but this was just too funny not to share. I hope you all have a blessed day. Later.

Well ok since you asked> Back during the "Great War"
I don't understand why we call World War I the "Great War",no war has ever been great! And you know it's really
bad when we resort to numbering wars, looks like we would
learn! Anyway, soldiers didn't have field rations that they could carry with them until later in the war. So kitchens were assigned to feed the troops. The troops were given turns off the lines/out of the trenches to return to the rear to feed and take care of their needs. When it was time for then to return to the front, the call would go out for them to get "back to the trenches"> thus the dread that was involved with that command!!!

HAPPY TAX DAY, AMERICA! I went to the post office yesterday afternoon to mail my tax returns. Like Judy, I decided to file EARLY this year. I’m not one to wait until the last minute. :-) Actually, the news from my accountant was not as bad as I expected. I almost broke even… and I guess “BROKE” is the appropriate word here. By the way… I’m thinking of you too, Ray. Hope you have a wonderful vacation planned… starting tomorrow.

This has been a pretty good week, all things considered. Monday, Liz and I had a Spring Break visit from my niece Diane (my late sister Helen’s youngest daughter) and two of her kids… daughter Dakota (16) and son Dalton (14)… and a family friend. Dakota and Dalton are learning to play the guitar, and they both brought their guitars with them and entertained us with a concert on our back porch! It was so much fun! And they were soon accompanied by the variety of songbirds in our back yard. What a treat! Then we went inside where Liz joined them… first on the piano, and then on the organ. Music is a blessing indeed! We all went out for a late lunch at a nearby country buffet. Yummo! We count our blessings for days like that!

I’m glad to hear that all of you are on the mend from your various ailments. And hope you all get good reports from your visits to the doctor. I just had my routine checkup with my dermatologist myself (thumbs up!)

Connie… I too am happy to hear that your son Kyle had only minor injuries from his chainsaw encounter. I have had to use my own chainsaw far too often to clear trees and large limbs from my property, and I have a great respect/fear of chainsaws. Liz is always concerned when I do use it. But, like Gary, I do know when to call in the pros. I know my limits.

Thanks for the history lesson, Jim. I am always fascinated by the origin of words and phrases.

Well, I stayed up too late last night watching the Braves! And I need to get to work. "DUTY" calls. Have great day, mates!

Judy Stewart (Findley)

Jim, I also appreciate the "history" lesson. Been a while for me, ha ha.
Connie, I am glad Kyle is doing well. I am afraid of chain saws. They are "scary". Gotta go work, later.

Diane Harris (Moore)

Judy, I appreciated the history lesson, too. Jimmy, thank you for your enlightenment. Having always been the intellectual sort, as you well remember, I thirst for knowledge. This is why I especially enjoyed the Port-a-Potty names. You never know when stuff like that might come up on Jeopardy, or at your next pre-mud rasslin' cocktail party.

Dick and I just got back from a beautiful hike in one of our nearby state parks. He kept wanting to take my picture standing at the very edge of the gorge, but I wasn't falling for that one. I only LOOK dumb. It was pretty, though, and my formerly bad knee kept up with the rest of me.

Judy, good to hear from you!

Y'all have a fantastic Friday, and an even better weekend.

04/16/10 06:38 AM #1492

Diane Harris (Moore)

P.S. I meant to say "Hi, Liz!" What a neat thing that you and Judy were able to meet for a fun play date with those grandkids! How cool is that?

Happy Friday!! Yeah, another beautiful day in the Classic City. I had a hard time leaving the house this morning. Erin was dropping off Jackson and Julianna on her way to a doctor's appointment. They were so sweet and loving - tough to leave them. "Bye bye Papa". Ohhhhhh. Well that is the inspiration for today's funny. Hope everyone has a most blessed weekend. Later.

When my granddaughter, Abby was 9-years-old, she was given an assignment by her teacher to write a story on "Where my family came from." The purpose was to understand your genealogy.
I was not aware of her assignment when she asked me at the dining room table one night, "Grandma, where did I come from?"
I responded quite nervously because my son and daughter-in-law were out of town and I was stalling until they returned home, "Well, honey, the stork brought you."
"Where did Mom come from then?"
"The stork brought her, too."
"OK, then where did you come from?"
"The stork brought me too, dear."
"Okay, thanks, Grandma."
I did not think anything more about it until two days later when I was cleaning Ann's room and read the first sentence of her paper, "For three generations there have been no natural births in our family."

Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A cell phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands free speaker-function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen.

MAN: "Hello"

WOMAN: "Honey, it's me. Are you at the club?"

MAN: "Yes"

WOMAN: "I am at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat. It's only $1,000. Is it OK if I buy it?"

MAN: "Sure, ..go ahead if you like it that much."

WOMAN: "I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2006 models. I saw one I really liked"

MAN: "How much?"

WOMAN: "$90,000"

MAN: "OK, but for that price I want it with all the options."

WOMAN: "Great! Oh, and one more thing ... The house I wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking $950,000"

MAN: "Well, then go ahead and give them an offer of $900,000. They will probably take it. If not, we can go the extra 50 thousand. If it's really a pretty good price."

WOMAN: "OK. I'll see you later! I love you so much!!"

MAN: "Bye! I love you, too."

The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths agape.....

He smiles and asks: "Anyone know who this phone belongs to?...."

Throughout the ages, men have been trying to unlock the mystery as to why their wives who accepted them as they were before they got married, subtly and with determination began the quest to change their behaviour and life-style once their vows were exchanged.

Finally, the riddle was solved. A social-scientist arrived at a simple and logical conclusion.

When the bride, accompanied by her father, starts to walk slowly down the long aisle, she sees the altar at the end and hears the choir singing a hymn. Walking down the aisle, the conditioning process where the brain absorbs these three stimuli: aisle, altar, hymn, begins.

She becomes mesmerized as she continually reinforces these perceptions:
aisle, altar, hymn. . .
aisle, altar, hymn. . .
aisle, altar, hymn.

And finally, as she stops beside the groom, the conditioning process is completed. She looks up at him lovingly, smiling sweetly and thinks ‘I’ll alter him’.

Why some men prefer dogs over women

1.Doggy1  The later you are, the more excited your dogs are to see you.

2. Dogs don’t notice if you call them by another dog’s name.

 3. Dogs like it if you leave a lot of things on the floor.

4. A dog’s parents never visit.

5. Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across.

6. You never have to wait for a dog; they’re ready to go 24 hours a day.

7. Dogs find you amusing when you’re drunk.

8. Dogs like to go hunting and fishing.

9. A dog will not wake you up at night to ask, ‘If I died, would you get another dog?’

10. If a dog has babies, you can put an ad in the paper and give them away.

11. A dog will let you put a studded collar on it without calling you a pervert.

12. If a dog smells another dog on you, they don’t get mad. They just think it’s interesting.Doggy2

13. Dogs like to ride in the back of a pickup truck.

And last, but not least:

14. If a dog leaves, it won’t take half of your stuff.

All I have to say is "Funny, funny, funny!" I really shouldn't let these posts accumulate like I do before I read them. I could use those laughs everyday.

I've got to agree about the dogs. They really are man's, and woman's, best friend.

Have a safe, good, happy, productive weekend dear pals.

Yawn!!!  Just a sleepy Monday here in the Classic City after a busy weekend.  Got to spend quality time with all six grand kids .... it does a heart good.  Sold the Jeep and BMW motorcycle last week so I guess I need to be looking for another toy.  Sherron says I have too many as it is.  I know many of you have Facebook accounts and may even Twitter.  I don't recall anyone mentioning they post on You Tube but for any that track such things, I understand those three organizations, You Tube, Twitter and Facebook are merging.  The new organization will be "You Twit Face"!  I hope everyone had a blessed week and good fortune will smile upon you this week!  Later.

I guess I’m one of those who will soon be on “You Twit Face”.  What can I say?  I do love Facebook and use YouTube frequently too… great site for videos!  But I don’t Twitter.  Facebook is enough for me.  So Gary… are you on “You Twit Face”?

I don’t think we have a big movie going bunch here on the forum, but I was wondering if anyone has seen “Avatar”?  One of my nieces (Ron’s daughter, Lori) proclaimed it to be the best movie she has ever, ever seen… EVER!  And when it won the Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction, I decided I had to see it for myself.  But… it is not Liz’s kind of movie.  I tried to explain to her that I thought there was a “chick flick” story line somewhere in the movie (between two blue people on another planet), but she still wasn’t interested.  So I went to see it on Friday… BY MYSELF.  And I really enjoyed it.  It was one of those movies where I kept asking myself, “How did they do that?”  James Cameron is quite a story teller and film maker with one creative imagination.

The movie was a lot better entertainment than my Braves have been lately.  I think that termites have infested their bat racks.  As we used to say down on the farm, “They can’t hit the broad side of a barn.”  But it’s still early…  Go Braves!

Have a great week folks!

PS... I saw this ACTUAL COURT TESTIMONY recorded by a court reporter, and thought you might enjoy it....

ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?

WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?

WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?

WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?

WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?

WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.

ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless?

WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law.

Gary, I suppose congratulations are in order on selling your motorcycle, but I don't know if you were eager to do it, or just thought it "was time". I don't want one, and I am glad Dick doesn't want one, but I sort of  admire people who throw caution to the wind and go for it. My brother rode his Gold Wing 'till he was 75, and loved it.

Gary and Don, that "You Twit Face" thing is so funny! Like Don, I enjoy Facebook a lot, but keep my tweets to myself.

Don, haven't seen Avatar. We've meant to, but just haven't, but I have not heard anything but glowing reports from friends who did.

No news. I'm just up late, and feeling close to home (translation-Oglethorpe County) for some reason. I have joined ancestry.com and am absolutely loving it. It is such a help with family history, and I'm able to actually download my great-granddaddies Civil War records, etc. It has answered many questions for me. I am in the process of writing my life story. I know that sounds weird, but my Mama wrote her's when she was in her mid 80s, and both my brother and sister have written theirs. I wouldn't take a million dollars for my mother's, which is written in her handwriting, and tells lots of personal stories from her young life and on. I just want to do it for my descendants. Some may think it's silly, but I knew only one of my grandparents, and I have always wished I could have known the others. They are just names on a family tree, when I'd love to know who they really were. What they believed, what life was like for them, all those personal things. Maybe I share some of their quirks. It would be fun to know. Anyway, that's what I'm doing, one paragraph and memory at a time. I guess the dreamer in me hopes that my great-great-greats might someday care, and I can pass on to them some of the things that are important to me. Sometimes I'm typing and have tears running down my cheeks from just remembering, and it won't even be a sad memory. I am such a sap!

Well, enough of that. Wishing you all a goodnight. Don, maybe this will be the week Dick and I will see Avatar.

Diane, giving up the motorcycle wasn't easy but I haven't ridden it in about 6 months and can see no opportunities in the forseeable future.  Like a lot of things in my life, been there, done that, got the tee shirt, ready to move on.  Just one of my bucket list items, I guess.  Same could be said of the jeep.  It was fun, done it, NEXT!  A great deal has transpired over the last several months - since my brother's death.  All I can say is God has truly BLESSED us in unexpected ways.  From the sale of the motorcycle to a guy from Alabama who drove here just to pick it up to the sale of the Jeep to a dealer from Calhoun looking to increase his inventory, God has worked everything out, in his time and that's what makes giving up the motorcycle and jeep almost a non-decision.   I have considered joining Ancestry for years.  I have Family Tree Maker and have added to the contents over the years.  What I have discovered is that the story of my ancestry would most properly be called "Wild Roots".    I have learned through "death bed confessions" the truth about several ancestors.  Hunting down ancestors will probably be one of my hobbies when I retire.  With the ability to add images, I've collected pictures of a number of family tombstones.  Its always interesting what you can uncover.

And Don, speaking of attorneys, anyone heard from Dennis lately?  Wonder if he ran off and got married again and too busy honeymooning!  Or maybe just being a bachelor - also a very time consuming endeavor.

On a somber note, I saw this morning that Mrs. Hawkins (teacher and mother of Bill) passed away.  A very sweet lady.  I got to know her when I ran around with Bill and while he was convalescing following his accident.  Visitation is this evening at Lord and Stephens East.

I hope everyone is continuing to have a BLESSED week.  Later.

Mornin’ Mates…

I knew of Diane’s interest in family history, but didn’t know that Gary was interested too.  With all the chatter about family history, I decided to start a "User Forum" on the topic… check it out if you are interested in the subject.

Diane… let me know if you see “Avatar”.  And, Jim… I will be sure to check out the movie “2012” too.  I’ve seen the previews and it does look like my kind of movie… special effects and lots of action!  By the way, Jim… are you hanging in there with the Braves?  It has been pretty ugly lately… seven losses in a row right now.  No hitting!  I do think they will get things turned around, but I have thought for years that we need a new hitting coach.  I like Terry Pendleton, but he is just not getting the job done.  But a change won’t happen until Bobby is gone.  I sure hope that Pendleton doesn’t take Bobby’s place.  Oh well.  Go Braves!

Have a great Hump Day folks!

Connie Morgan (White)

I've enjoyed the posts and jokes!

Kyle's knee is doing good, and I appreciate the "well wishes" that were sent.  He still walks a little "stiff-legged" (not quite as bad as Chester on the old Gunsmoke), but is so fortunate and doing good.

One of my aunts (one of my daddy's sisters) had a stroke last Saturday, so I've been spending some of my "non-working" time with her @ Athens Regional.  I spent last night there after work, so I should sleep good tonight!  Thankfully she is making some progress.

I'm afraid I don't know any news to add.  Just wanted to say "hi" and I'm thinking of y'all.  I check-in every day (even tho I don't have anything to add).

As we are saying good-bye to April and welcoming May, you all be blessed!                                       With love

04/28/10 11:13 PM #1506

Diane Harris (Moore)

Connie, I am glad to hear Kyle is coming along OK with his leg after the accident. I hope he will eventually have his normal gait back. What a scary thing! Also sorry about your aunt. Do I know her? You are so kind to sit with her. That's a lonely vigil, but a wonderful thing to do for someone you love.

Don, there will be no Avatar this week, I'm afraid. A much respected man at our church died today, and I'm in charge of getting the food together for the family following Saturday's funeral. Everyone's so busy, and I'm having to use high pressure tactics to get people to cooperate. Not really, they are very supportive. Of course, we also have to get away just in the nick of time to go see "A Chorus Line" at the Shuster Center (our performing arts place here). I seems so inappropriate to attend a funeral, set up and serve a meal for the family, then dash out to go see a musical. Creepy.

Don, I'll check out the forum real soon and see what you wrote. I really have gotten even more interested than before in the family history. I'm afraid I have too many interests to do any of them any justice. Unfortunately, the many things I have to do around the house always are at the bottom of my "preferred" things to do. I'd always rather be looking something up, or daydreaming about something else I want to do, etc. I think I'm ADHD.

Better go. I am way too wired to sleep, and need to wind down somehow.

Y'all take care. Love hearing from all of you.

Don, noticed you have been laying low lately.  Probably due to the Brave's losing streak.  Bobby Cox was hoping to go out in a "blaze of glory" but looking more like "going down in flames" - a small but significant difference of which I speak from experience.  One of the skill developed as a ship driver was underway replenishment - where one ship goes along side another to receive fuel and/or stores (food).  It is a thing of beauty if done correctly and by a skilled ship handler.  The potential for disaster looms constantly as the receiving ship approaches, as it must overcome the effect of the other ship's wake and match speed and direction to hold station.   There are some paramaters like speed and distance that can be applied but then things like the winds and the seas can wreak havoc on all of the science.  I must say, I became very adept at this and helped train other junior officers, although it has more to do with feel than science.  My day of departure from the ship was fast approaching and so I had been assigned watches in Combat (down in the bowels of the ship) so others could gain experience on the bridge (driving the ship).  We were getting into position when the Captain called me to the Bridge to have the honor of driving the ship for my last underway replenishment.  Wanting to go out "in a blaze of glory" I concentrated on making my approach as perfect as possible - NOT!  For some reason I failed to cut my speed soon enough or back enough to fall into station.  I flew through station like we were in a race!  Falling back into station is tougher than coming up from the rear.  I was able to finally get the ship properly positioned but not without some looks of distain and embarrassment from the Captain (good thing I was leaving).  "Down in Flames"!  Sometimes things just don't work out the way you planned - but in my sexty (yes, I typed SEXTY) years, I've learned to move on and not keep punching that "tar baby".  I hope you are all having a very blessed week.  I had to stop typing a moment ago to take a call from my 2 year old grand son.  I'm not sure of everything he is saying but the fact that he HAS to call PAPA makes my LIFE WONDERFUL.  Later.

Gary… I’m still here… and pulling for the Braves!  I got home from church last night in time to see them lose their 8th game in a row by a score of 6-0!  It’s hard to win games when you do not score.  The Braves hitting is terrible!  Not exactly what I expected.   I’ve heard it said that you can’t win the pennant in April, but you sure can lose it.  But as a long time Braves fan, I remember much worse teams back in the 70’s and 80’s.  Right now, the Braves are in last place all by themselves, but only 4 games out of first place.  I still think things will turn around, and I’m hanging in there.

Thanks Gary for sharing your experience of almost wrecking your ship… I’m sure it is a lot funnier in hindsight.  I’ll bet you almost wet your pants on that one!  And thanks for sharing some of your “wild roots” on the “Family History” forum.  I am looking forward to hearing some of Diane’s Civil War family history if she will share it with us.  I may try to share a few Civil War notes myself later.

By the way Diane… hope you enjoy “A Chorus Line”.  I saw it at the Fox Theater about 30 years ago BL (before Liz).  It was very good.

It is great to hear from you again Connie.  I’m glad that your son is recovering well and not as bad as “Chester”.  Prayers go out for your Aunt.  Liz has an Aunt out in Texas that is having breast cancer surgery tomorrow and needs prayers too.

Have a great Thursday, folks.  I think I may “lay low” this afternoon and tune in the Braves game on radio and pull for them to break this losing streak.
