WOW Jim!! A hole in one!!! That's great.  I've never witnessed one but was impressed/amused when a widow displayed her late husband's score card, recording his hole in one at his funeral.

I had to go to Augusta yesterday to the VA center to get tested and fitted for hearing aids.  I've needed them for some time and finally going to give in.  I was really impressed with the Charles Norwood VA Center.

Well it feels like Monday since I was off yesterday.  I hope you all had a blessed weekend and will have a really GREAT week.  I guess I'll start it off with a little jab at Dennis since he never comes around to defend himself.  Later.

*************

On their way to getting married, a young couple is involved in a fatal car accident. They find themselves sitting outside the Pearly Gates, waiting for St. Peter to process them into Heaven. While waiting, they begin to wonder: Could they possibly get married in Heaven? When St. Peter shows up, they ask him. St. Peter says, 'I don't know. This is the first time anyone has asked that. Let me go and find out,' and he leaves.

The couple sit and wait, and wait. Two months pass and the couple is still waiting. As they wait, they discuss that if they were allowed to get married in Heaven, what was the eternal aspect of it all. 'What if it doesn't work?' they wondered. 'Are we stuck together forever?'

After yet another month, St. Peter finally returns, looking somewhat bedraggled. 'Yes,' he informs the couple, 'you can get married in Heaven.'

'Great!' says the couple, 'But we were just wondering, what if things don't work out? Can we also get a divorce in Heaven?'

St. Peter, red-faced with anger, slams his clipboard onto the ground.

'What's wrong?' ask the frightened couple.

'OH, COME ON!' St. Peter shouts, 'It took me three months to find a priest up here! Do you have any idea how long it'll take me to find a lawyer?'

They say if you want to look thin, hang around with fat folks.  I guess you could also say, if you want to appear smart, hang around with dummies.  Well that would explain why we have the VP we do.  PBO wanting to appear smart selected Joe Biden as VP.  Now a rock would look very intellignet next to this dummy.  From this morning's news:

'The U.S. vice president, opening his address in Belgium, argued that Brussels -- considering its rich history and abundance of international institutions -- could well be the "capital of the free world."

He suggested that Washington, D.C., his home, is undeserving of that title -- notwithstanding its wealth of global organizations and the countless international summits that take place there. '

So, dummy Joe is not proud of his country or home.  Well, Joe, why don't you just stay in Brussels or some other country that you can be proud of.  This administration's globe trotting dissing of the US is pissing me off!!!  If you don't love it, LEAVE IT!!!!  ..... and I EARNED the right to say that.  No medals on that bimbo's chest.

Later.

GARY,

YOU NEED TO CONSIDER THE FACT THAT AS LONG AS HE AND OBAMA

ARE IN THE WHITE HOUSE, THIS COUNTRY IS NOT A HOUSE FREE! NOT

AS LONG AS THOSE SOCIALIST CAST A SHADOW THROUGHOUT THOSE

HALLOWED HALLS!

DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN DELIVER US FROM THE  IGNORANCE THIS

ELECTORATE HAS EXPOSED US TO. AND LETS PRAY THEY

HAVE SEEN THE FOLLIES OF THEIR CARELESSNESS. WE CAN ONLY BE

THANKFUL  THAT CHANGE CAN GO IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION. BUT

ONLY IF WE ARE NOT TO LATE!!!

Well Jim it looks like I scared everyone away with my political rants.  Here is a rotten joke that will probably run you off as well.  Later (maybe?).

*******

A man went to his dentist because his mouth felt funny. The dentist examined him and said, "That new upper plate I put in for you six months ago is eroding. What have you been eating?"

The man replied, "All I can think of is that about four months ago my wife made some asparagus and put some stuff on it that was delicious. Hollandaise sauce. I loved it so much I now put it on everything - meat, toast, fish, vegetables, everything."

"Well," said the dentist, "that's probably the problem. Hollandaise sauce is made with lots of lemon juice, which is highly corrosive. It's eaten away your upper plate. I'll make you a new plate, and this time I'll use chrome."

"Why chrome?" asked the patient.

To which the dentist replied, "It's simple. Everyone knows that there's no plate like chrome for the hollandaise!"

GARY,

I DON'T BELIEVE YOU'VE RUN THEM OFF WITH YOU PATRIOTIC

EXPLOSION. IT WAS NEEDED TO WAKE FOLKS UP. WHY IS IT

THAT WE NEED TO BE SHOOK AWAKE FROM TIME TO TIME. THIS

MAN (OBAMA) APPEARS EVERYDAY TO BE THE ONE THAT PROPHECY

HAS SAID WOULD COME. IF HE IS NOT THEN HE IS TRULY ONE OF

THE FALSE PROPHETS THAT WAS FORETOLD.

THESE PEOPLE REPRESENT THE TOTAL OPPOSITE OF WHERE THIS

COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED. IT'S TIME EVERY GOD FEARING AMERICAN

PATRIOT IS FULLY AWAKE. SO THANK YOU SIR!

IT IS MY PRAYER THAT THE  GREAT GOD IN HEAVEN REACH DOWN AND

HOLD ALL OF US DURING THIS WEEKEND OF remembrance OF ALL

OUR FALLEN BROTHERS AND SISTERS. AND KEEP EACH AND EVERYONE

SAFE.

THANK YOU BROTHERS!

Jim, I echo your honoring our fallen military.  They gave the ultimate to allow us the freedom too many take for granted.  I'm just so sorry our President will be too busy playing golf to remember our fallen.  However, he will be sending his VP.  I wonder how he will insult those he is supposed to be honoring or how many of them he will see in the crowd (remember that line?)!  His showing should be good for at least one idiot line.  Rush Limbaugh must have read my post.  His morning update today sounded just like what I typed.  I guess what they say about GREAT minds is true.

Jim if you need some hints on an inexpensive wedding, I can help.  After three daughters, we got it down to a science.  The first one was married at the Christian Church on College Station Road - on a Saturday morning.  I was at the church at sun rise!  Second daughter was married at sunset on a Friday afternoon on the Botanical Gardens, Garden Club Patio.  It had been raining for three days and was storming one hour before the ceremony.  Daughter three was married at the Staghorn Chapel in Nicholson.  All three were very different but it was what they wanted.  I don't remember what each cost but I don't believe we spent over $3000 on any one.  Your daughter can have a beautiful wedding without putting you in the poor house.  We tried the eloping offer too but I'm glad they turned us down.  I would have payed a million for the honor of walking each of my little girls down the aisle.  Its one of those last daddy things you get to do.

I wish all visitors a BLESSED and safe Memorial Day.  And please take a moment to remember those who died so we can be free.  Later.

My heartfelt and loving gratitude to everyone who has ever served in the armed forces!!!

I hope you are all doing well.  I had hoped we could get-together in the spring...but spring rushed into summer, and I just haven't been able to get things together.    Maybe we can plan a late summer/early fall gathering!

Take care of yourselves.

God bless America.

Greetings, Americans!

On this day of honor, I offer a SALUTE to all the men and women who have served this great country in our armed forces, with special thanks to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and given their lives in defense of FREEDOM.

Liz was feeling well enough to get out a little this weekend, and we spent a few hours Saturday at the American Indian Festival at the Gwinnett County Fairgounds.  With both of us having some Cherokee Indian blood in our family tree, we enjoyed a little time with our Native American cousins.  I took along my camera to take tons of pictures of the wonderful Indian Dancers and their beautiful colorful costumes.  There was plenty of Indian arts and crafts and jewelry there too and we enjoyed a great Indian dish (hotdogs & nachos) for lunch.  :-)  Part of the festival program was a very nice tribute to American military veterans, and many of those honored were Indians of various tribes from all over the country who have served in the American armed forces.

Yesterday, Liz and I were back in both Sunday School and Church for the first time in weeks.  The electrical power for our entire church went out about 30 minutes before the worship service, so things were delayed while emergency generators and sound systems were rounded up to hold the service in semi-darkness.  The lights came back on about ten minutes after church was over.  Last night we watched the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS which was a nice tribute too.  That has become sort of a tradition for us.  Do any of you ever watch it?

Today we have just relaxed around the house.  I fixed us a big breakfast to start the day, and this afternoon I've been watching the BRAVES on TV... the FIRST PLACE Atlanta Braves I might add.  They have been playing baseball as well as anyone the whole month of May, and moved from last place, six games out... to first place today, beating the Phillies.  GO BRAVES!  Have you been watching, Jim?

Hope you have all had a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend.  Have a great week!

Reporting live from Johnson Ferry Road, Cobb County, Marietta, Georgia, USA... this is Don.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Kathy Carter (Campbell)

Don, glad that Liz is feeling better.I watched PBS last night and enjoyed the program also.

We had a great day at church yesterday to celebrate Memorial Day. We had a "white table" ceremony to honor the memory of all those who have given their life in all the wars of our nation. If you have never seen a "white table" ceremony, then you are missing a moving tribute to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. The "white table" ceremony was started by a group of servicemen during the Vietnam war.

MEMORIAL DAY...so many people in our nation don't recognize the true meaning of the day; Many, many people just look at it as a holiday from work, the beginning of summer vacation time, time for just a fun long weekend.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you--Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul; the other died for your freedom.

The fallen....but not forgotten. Let's remember.

Gary Grice

Amen Kathy!  You spoke a lot of truth.  Unfortunately, our church hasn't made a practice of honoring the military.  They did have a Veteran's Day service last November but I was at the hospital with my new granddaughter and yesterday, I was down with my back, but Sherron said no mention was made of the military.  I spend most of yesteday sitting on my ICE - literally.  Did get up to go to a friend's 50th anniversary reception then back to the ice.  I helped Erin and JJ finish off their garage today - moved real slow and did a lot of pointing and giving direction.  They still need to paint and put up new lights - the carpet is coming Friday.

Yeah, Connie - where did the spring go.  I've been as busy as a one armed paper hanger and no relief in the short term.  I hope to get someone started on Larry's house by the first of July.  The little lady we look after is going to move into assisted living in the next few weeks and I'll have to deal with her house.

Oldest daughter just called - gotta run.  Later.

Oh Gary, I'm so sorry about your back. I can sympathize with you because I have so much back and leg pain. Even have to use a cane somtimes. Did you injure it, or is it just due to aging? Mine is age and weight related and my dr. says I need to walk, but it is so painful most o the time for me to walk. Hope you are soon better. Take care of that back!

Gary Grice

Sorry I had to rush off last night but when my daughters call ......

I don't know what triggered my back this time.  Started with a minor ache last week.  Then I had to go to Augusta and 5 hours driving didn't help.  Then I didn't stop and nurse it as I should but kept going like an idiot.  Now, I'm paying the price.  Fortunately I have an appointment with my Physical Therapist tomorrow.  He has really helped my back and I hope he can work another miracle.  I have injured my back several times over the years and now I'm reaping the rewards as age and gravity increase their influence.  I just have to remember that I can't do what I used to do and EXERCISE!  I'm better today but still pretty uncomfortable.  Kathy, I hope your spells are FEW and FAR between.  I know many of us are starting to suffer the ravages of age but we're still living so I guess we're okay.

First day back in the office after a long weekend - tough to get going.  I know Don and Jim had a GREAT weekend as the Braves have come alive!  Hope everyone else had a great weekend too.  Make it a great week!  Later.

Jim and Don are really celebrating now!  Happy Wednesday one and all.   My physical therapist is a miracle worker and although sore, I am much more mobile today.  Now if I could just stop messing up my back .....  All is pretty quite here in the Classic City so I thought a little joke might brighten everyone's day.  (For you non-golfers, a mulligan is a second shot from approximately the same spot.)  Later.

********

Paul was teeing off from the back tees. On his down-swing, he suddenly realized that his wife, Alison, was about to tee off from the red tees, directly in his path. Unable to stop his down swing he nailed the ball, hit Alison directly in the right temple, killing her instantly.

A few days later Paul received a call from the coroner concerning her autopsy . ‘Paul, your wife seems to have died from blunt force trauma to the head. You said you hit a golf ball and struck her in the temple. Is that correct?’

’Yes sir,’ Paul replied, ‘that’s correct.’

’Well, Paul, I also found a large bruise on Allison’s right hip. Do you know anything about that?’

’Yes sir,’ Paul said, ‘That would have been my mulligan.’

Happy Thursday!  Now a little proud humor.  Honest, I didn't rewrite this story.  Later.

********

Army, Air Force, and Marine Generals were standing in front of a rappelling tower with a Navy Admiral. The Air Force General says to the others, "My men are the most courageous of the Armed Forces."

"Ha!" said Army, "My men are the most courageous and I'll prove it."

Army calls a Private over from the tower. He tells the Private, "I want you to jump off that tower - no rope, no parachute."

"Yes, Sir!!!" the Private yells and proceeds to climb the tower. The Private walks to the edge, yells "Hoo-ahh!" and jumps off the tower. He is killed instantly upon impact.

"That's nothing," the Air Force General said, bored. He calls a Senior Airman over. "Son, I want you to jump off that tower - no rope, no parachute and I want you to do it with style."

"Yes, Sir!!!" the Senior Airman yells. He climbs to the top of the tower, walks to the edge and jumps. He executes a swan dive that would make Greg Louganis proud, hits the ground and dies on impact.

"Hmmph," the Marine growled. "Ya'll obviously forgot the Marine Corps were here," he said (yelling "Marine Corps!" as all Marines tend to do.)

He calls a Lance Corporal over. "Marine, I want you to jump off that tower and make the Corps proud!"

The Corporal yells, "Ooh-rah!", by way of response and runs to the tower. He grabs an M-60 and ammunition belt on the way and wraps the belt around himself in the Pancho Villa style. He climbs the tower and walks to the edge. Upon reaching the edge, he throws two grenades into the air, yells "Semper Fi Do or Die!" and jumps off. He starts shooting the M-60 in mid-air, clipping treetops and yelling the entire way down. His impact is obscured by the two exploding grenades. When the smoke clears, only little pieces of the Marine are left.

The others are impressed and nod their heads in admiration. Then the Admiral says, "That's nothing." The others turn to face the Admiral, their faces in disbelief. The Admiral calls a Seaman over who was cleaning latrines. "Son, I want you to jump off that tower- no rope, no parachute."

The Seaman looks the Admiral in the face and says, "Screw you! You kiss my ass!" and walks off.

The Admiral turns to the others and says, "Now THAT'S courage!"

Diane Harris (Moore)

Haven't written in a while, and thought I'd send a quick "howdy". I think I'm behind on news, but in a quick review I was glad to see that Liz is feeling better, but sorry your back has been problematic, Gary.

We got back Sunday night from our Georgia trip. I did get to see the Sexy Seven, but Kathy apparently did not get the memo----we are now known simply as "the seven". Wish we could have had more time, but we had much to do. Dick's mom is trying to get her home ready to sell, so we spent all of our Athens time doing physical labor there. Some of you already know what a job that is.

A friend is currently visiting from Oklahoma until Monday morning. She came back for the graduation of some special kids, and our bed and breakfast is always open. Then Tuesday I fly out to Colorado for 9 days to tend to grandkids while my daughter-in-law goes to NY to visit her parents who are both ill. So I may not be logging on much for awhile.

Better run. Just wanted to let you know I'm still kicking. Happy June to all!

06/09/10 03:04 PM #1578

Gary Grice

Okay Jim and Don, what did you two do to scare away the ladies?  Diane was the last 6 days ago!  Shame, shame, shame!

Jim, I've made two treks down to the VA centers over the last couple of weeks.  Will be getting hearing aids the end of the month and should have new glasses in about a month.  And as the story goes, I think now I'll go buy me a wig and some viagra and I'll be my old self again.  (I can say that since no ladies are around.)  I was impressed with the facilities and staff at both places - one appointment Uptown and one Downtown.  I just hate the two plus hour ride to get there.

Our janitor keeps me posted on the Braves every morning.  So I guess you are both HAPPY!  They seem to be holding their own.  I don't follow closely but hey, they are our team!  Not much going on around here.  Seems like everyone is going on vacation except ME!  I'm plotting my retirement, hopefully in two years, cause I know how quickly that day can get here.  Seems like only yesterday that we started this site and began planning for our reunion - - that was two years and 9000+ visitors ago!  I was hoping we could have a get together this spring but just toooooooo much going on.  Maybe this fall.

Well I guess I should close with a little chuckle - unless Jim wants to tell us what happened between the first and second hole ....... but probably a little too BLUE for this site since we never know who might stop by .... So here's a G rated one.  Later.

****************

One night a burglar is trying to break into a house. He's sneaking across the lawn when he hears a voice say, "Jesus is watching you!" He jumps, turns around, but he doesn't see anything.

He starts creeping across the lawn again. "Jesus is watching you!" He hears it again.

So now the burglar is really looking around, and he sees a parrot in a cage by the side of the house. He says to the parrot, "Did you say that?"

The parrot answers "Yes I did."

So the burglar asks, "What's your name?"

The parrot says "Clarence."

The burglar says "What kind of stupid idiot would name his parrot Clarence?"

The parrot laughs and says, "The same stupid idiot that named his Rottweiler 'Jesus' "

Hump Day Greetings, Mates.

Kinda quiet here on the forum lately.  And I’m afraid I don’t have anything exciting to share myself.  And I don’t have any good jokes, but Gary, I liked the one you posted on the military big wigs and “courage”.  My sympathies go out to you on the hearing aids, new glasses, back issues, hair issues, and viagra.  I can't hear as well out of my left ear as I used to... "can you hear me now"?  And I got the new glasses last fall from Doctor Ho.  My back seems to be ok, but Liz has enough problems with hers for both of us.  And I just got a haircut today.  Now about that viagra... I'll reserve comment.

Good to hear from Diane again.  Looks like you and Dick are very, very busy here to start the summer.  Liz and I went to a wedding for a friend over the weekend… very nice, with a nice dinner/reception too.  Good food and a very large band playing jazz/pop/rock favorites that would appeal to the younger generation… like us!  Good music, although a wee bit loud… we couldn’t hear each other talk.  Dancing too… but with Liz’s knee and back, we had to be spectators.  And besides, I didn’t have my “boogie shoes” on.  I did take lots of photos as usual.  Liz has been feeling better, thank God, and we are back into our routine at church…  and Liz is back in the choir after a  few weeks of leave with the health issues.  We will head to church tonight and she will sing with the choir for a special program.

I’ve been staying up late watching the Braves play on the left coast… up till 1:00 am Friday and Saturday nights with the Dodgers, and Monday night and last night with the D-backs.    I guess I'm a "baseballaholic" but I love it!  The Braves had a nine game WIN streak that was broken over the weekend, and we’re still in first place and playing pretty good baseball despite some nagging injuries.  I’ll probably be up late again for tonight’s game.  Yawn!  GO BRAVES!

Hope you are all doing well out there.  Looking forward to hearing from our regulars again… Gary, Jim, Connie, Diane, Kathy… and anyone else that pops in to check on us.  Any contributions would have to be more interesting than the boring stuff I have to offer… sports, politics, and day to day stuff.

Enjoy the rest of your week mates.  Here's wishing you all GOOD HEALTH!

Don

PS  I got Liz started on Facebook over the weekend, so she and I are now "friends".  :-)

ENOUGH THAT PEOPLE HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS. THE FISHING INDUSTRY IS

FINISHED IN THAT AREA. BUT THOSE BIRDS AND OTHER WILDLIFE, IT MAKES YOU WANT

TO SCREAM. YOU KNOW THE DRILLING INDUSTRY IS GOING TO HAVE A SPILL

ONCE IN A WHILE. BUT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. THIS MESS

WAS MADE BECAUSE THEY WERE TRYING TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS. IT WILL

TAKE MANY GENERATIONS TO CLEAN UP!

AS FAR AS GOING BETWEEN THE TWO HOLES GARY. I GUESS WE HAD BETTER LET

THAT SLID BY.  WHERE ARE ALL THE GIRLS? OH YES BY THE WAY! I HAD TO BE IN MY

NIECE'S WEDDING THIS PAST WEEKEND. I NEVER IN MY LIFE, NOT EVEN WHEN

WE GRADUATED DO I REMEMBER SEEING SO MANY BLACK DRESSES. AND TO

TOP IT OFF EVERYONE WAS FILLED, (AND I DO MEAN FILLED) WITH A BEAUTIFUL

GIRL!!! BLACK DRESSES, BEAUTIFUL WOMEN TO MUCH FOR THIS OLD HEART!!!

AFTER-A-WHILE

06/11/10 10:15 AM #1581

Gary Grice

Well we made it to Friday.  Sounds like a HOT ONE on tab for today and the next couple of days.  A few afternoon thunder bumpers assist in a little steam cleaning.  I was able to get out and cut half my lawn last evening after a few showers rolled through.  Jim, hopefully you can get in a round or two of golf this weekend.  I know, I know - not too many little black dresses on the golf course but try to enjoy anyway.  Don, the Braves seem to be holding their own, but wish they could build up a bigger buffer.  I'm always fearful of a September slump.

We've touched on a lot of topics here on the board, most of them useless.  I was wondering if anyone out there has any good investment ideas?  I'm debating putting some money in gold.  I read Aftershock and the authors recommended a gold ETF.  Specifically GLD.  They buy and hold gold bullion.  No need to take deliver, so no storage issue.  Also, since it is traded like a stock, there is always a market.  I've moved all of my retirement accounts into more conservative funds.  Half of my IRA is in a short-term bond that's doing well - slow and steady.  No dramatic daily swings.  The other half of my IRA is in a near-term retirement managed fund that swings with the market though not as dramatically.  I'm moving my ACC retirement fund into a near-term retirement managed fund also.  I had it in an agresssive fund but figured its time to play it a little safer.  I don't see anything on the horizon to make me think things are going to get better soon.  So many of the "experts" are touting the saving of our economy by the stimulus funds.  My question is, what happens next year?  The missing sources of revenue that were replaced by the stimulus funds are still missing! ... aren't they?  Property taxes - home forclosures continue.  Income taxes - unemployment remains somewhere between 10 and 17%.  Sales taxes - some signs of improvement but what happens when income and property taxes go up?  The "rescue" loans will have to be paid back.  Where is that money coming from?  And no signs of spending cuts by ANY government entity.  Can you say - TAX INCREASES on a reduced base.  My daddy said, "To keep from starving, feed the chicken and eat the eggs."  Sounds like pretty good advice.

I hope everyone one out there has a very blessed weekend.  Later.

HAPPY MONDAY!  I hope all had a GREAT weekend and will have a GREAT week.  If things haven't been going your way lately, check out this paragraph from a news story today and just remember, things could be worse:

At age 22, Van der Sloot is now a caged animal. He sits in a bleak third-world prison, where he fears his fellow inmates. After requesting isolation, he shares a cellblock with a reputed Colombian murderer-for-hire.

I took the plunge and bought GLD and of course, shares are down today.  I guess I'll sit back and wait for the "fat lady to sing".  Worked really hard all weekend trying to get my brother's house ready for a possible sale this week and repairing a water leak for my other brother.  Do you know how much fun it is to dig two 3 foot deep holes in wet clay in 90+ degree heat?!?!  Now I know why I decided to NOT become a plumber.  I enjoy the satisfaction of completing such projects but getting there can be a killer.  I guess you have surmised that my back is much better.  Not much else going on - just checking in.  Later.
