Late HAPPY BIRTHDAY wished Dale,  and Happy Birthday dear Diane!!!!!!!!   WELCOME TO THE 60's!

I hope you are all doing well.  I am hopeful the Braves will hang in there (hopefully the next game will look better than Sunday's)

Pround of our Georgia Dawgs!!   They subdued some of my "trash-talking Tennessee family". :)

Don, I saw Joel Colquitt and talked with him and his wife.  They will be on a camping trip that week-end.   I do appreciate those of you who have contacted our classmates.

LOOKING FORWARD  to seeing those of you who can come on OCT. 24 @ 2 p.m.

p.s.  Get well SOON, Gary!

Thank y'all for the sweet messages. I sit here with tears barely contained behind the rims of my eyes as I think of the past and wonder about the future. I couldn't have asked for a more loving family or a better bunch of peers to help me get through my crazy teens. Not everybody gets to say that. I do, and I mean it.

I don't mean for this to be long, and I'll try and stick to the plan. We'll see.

I took Dick to the airport this morning, and he will be in Philly all week. I drive myself to the airport in the morning for a 6:15 AM flight to CO. My daughter-in-law's mother is near death in NY, and I'm going out to assist in any way I can, not knowing really what to expect. My bed is covered with clothes as I try and narrow down what I pack. I don't want to check any luggage, so that will force me to choose wisely. It's a trip that I look forward to with both glee and sadness. I'm thrilled to see family, but very sad for Annie.

Turning 60 is really something. Lots of people, including several former classmates, didn't make it to this milestone, so I'm grateful I have. Yet when I got a "Golden Buckeye" card the other day (entitling me to senior discounts) and the postmark said "Ohio Dept. on Aging", it hit me in the gut. What an untactful postmark! I felt like a relic and checked myself for cobwebs and dust.

Better bet back to the luggage. Thank you for being my friends.

Good Morning, Mates…

It’s good to hear from you again, Jim.  I know you have had your hands full planning that big wedding for your daughter this weekend.  Sounds like it will be very nice.  Hope you enjoy your family and friends, the BBQ, and the music!

Hope you had a great birthday, Diane.  Have a nice safe trip to Colorado.

And Connie… glad to hear you had a nice visit with your “trash-talking” Tennessee family guests… GO DAWGS!

Well, Jim... and you other Braves fans… it’s over.  I really thought they were going to make a run to the World Series and send Bobby Cox out with a World Championship, but it just wasn’t meant to be.  Too much adversity to overcome, too many starters lost to injury, and not enough hitting.  But it has been a fun baseball season, all summer long.  And I do want to thank Bobby Cox for a fine job...  I think he may have done his best job as manager this year.  It’s been a lot of fun with Bobby in charge, and it's been a great ride!  I was a Braves fan long before he came along and took us to the playoffs on a regular basis.  And I never dreamed that I would even see a World Series game in person, let alone see my Braves playing in one.  And they even won it all in 1995.  Bobby made baseball fun, and his players loved him.  I wish him well in his retirement.  I know I have taken up a lot of space here on the forum as a Braves fan, so I will give it a rest (for the most part) until next year.  GO BRAVES!

Have a great week, folks.  Reporting live from BRAVES COUNTRY! ... this is Don.

"It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood ........ "  I trust all is well and everyone is happy and smiling!  I've been racking my brain trying to find a bit of knowledge to share, that would benefit the masses.  I have searched far and wide and finally came across something that one would have to say was worth the millions of dollars and hours spent confirming its validity.  Never have more profound words been spoken or wisdom more wise shared.  Once you grasp this truth, it will change your life and that of your children, and your children's children, even unto the tenth generation!  This has to rank up there as the GREATEST scientific discovery of ALL TIMES!  May you use this knowledge wisely.  Later.

Happy Hump Day to all...

UPDATE... Connie, I called Dorsey King and did not get to talk to him but did have a nice chat with his wife Vickie.  I gave her all the details of the gathering along with the website address if they needed more information.  She was not sure if they would be able to attend (she just had knee replacement surgery a week ago) but was grateful for the invitation.  BTW, Connie... thanks for getting the word to Joel Colquitt...  I think that's everyone on my list.

Enjoy the rest of your week, mates.

Greetings and salutations.  Jim, I guess you are in hiding to keep from being blamed for everything that hasn't been done or busy as a one armed paper hanger.  I empathize with you buddy, but I just know all will go well with the wedding.  Connie, I'm almost through my list.  So far: Tommy Adkins - Yes; Benny Allen - No (has NEW grandbaby); Jesse Allan Bray - Yes; Ross Dudley - Yes; Roy Nation - Yes; and left voice message for Charles McGarity.  I'll try to contact the remaining four over the next couple of days.

There must be an inverse relation between brains and football playing ability.  Here's a little story to illustrate my point.  Later.

The huge college freshman figured he'd try out for the football team. "Can you tackle?" asked the coach.

"Watch this," said the freshman, who proceeded to run smack into a telephone pole, shattering it to splinters

"Wow," said the coach. "I'm impressed. Can you run?"

"Of course I can run," said the freshman. He was off like a shot, and in just over nine seconds, he had run a hundred yard dash.

"Great!" enthused the coach. "But can you pass a football?"

The freshman rolled his eyes, hesitated for a few seconds. "Well, sir," he said, "if I can swallow it, I can probably pass it."

And that would be a good segway into this headline:

A question, mates...

Have any of you ever been "financially embarrassed" when you went to pay for something in a store or restaurant?... you just didn't have as much cash on you as you thought you had.  It's happened to me a few times through the years.  I usually pay cash for small things, and today I was out for lunch at Zaxby's.  I NEVER use credit or debit cards at fast food places.  Anyway, I ordered my favorite Zaxby's plate, their "wings and things" meal.  With tax it came to $6.88.  I pulled out my wallet and discovered that all I had was six one-dollar bills.  I dug into my pocket and started to count the change and it came to exactly 87 cents... I had $6.87 to pay for a $6.88 meal... I kid you not.  The cashier saw me counting pennies and let me have my lunch at a "discount".  LOL!  Good lunch, and I left there without a penny in my pocket... literally!

After tomorrow, Jim may be counting pennies too.  :-)

Have a nice weekend mates... looks like it will be a great weekend for weddings... and football!... GO DAWGS!

Hello !

Jim, it was a beautiful day for a wedding.   Did you survive???   I am sure it was so pretty.

MANY THANKS to everyone that has placed a call to anyone to spread the word about our Class of '68 gathering next Sunday afternoon, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.      If the weather is nice, we will sit outside, so bring a folding chair if you think of it.   I am looking so forward to seeing all that can come   (and we will miss those unable to come)

Gary, could you bring your class list of addresses and phone numbers so that we can make updates.?  I've had 1 or 2 people tell me that their phone numbers have changed.

Diane, I know that you are enjoying your time in Colorado with sweet grandbabies.   How is Annie's mom doing?   We will miss you and Dick next week-end.

I am really looking forward to seeing "old" friends next Sunday.

love you,

connie

Happy Monday everyone.  Jimmy, congratulations on the new son-in-law.  I'm assuming all went well - no news stories of errant shotgun blasts in you neck of the woods.  Connie, I think I have contacted or left a message for everyone on my list except Jimmy Tiller.  I got no answer at the number I have.  Left messages for Steve (I think), David, and Charles.   I will try to remember the list so we can hopefully get updated information.

I trust everyone had a good weekend.  I worked myself to death Saturday and spent Sunday recovering.  Got to take a short break to watch the second quarter of the Dawgs.  Really looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.  I guess I should attempt to do a little work today so I'll catch you'll  - Later.

Morning, mates…

Not a very exciting weekend here in Marietta.  I didn’t work as hard as Gary, but I did replace the ceiling light fixture in our master bedroom closet.  Not very complicated but that is the extent of my electrical repair expertise.  I don’t play around with electricity…  I know my limits.

We had three more political visitors at church yesterday… Sam Olens, running for Georgia Attorney General, and two candidates running for Superior Court Judge.

Jim… since you had more important things to do Saturday than watch the Georgia Bulldogs beat up on Vanderbilt at the Homecoming Game, you probably missed the introduction of UGA VIII, a fine looking new Georgia mascot.  He was in the DawgHouse most of the game sleeping away, but the game was something of a “yawner”… not much excitement.

In the South where football is king, there are not as many weddings scheduled in the fall because Saturdays are reserved for college football… which brings to mind a personal “wedding/football” story of my own that I will share.  Back in the fall of 1980, I was a bachelor living in Atlanta and one of my nieces (my older sister Helen’s daughter) got married before I did.  Her wedding was on Saturday afternoon, November 8, 1980 at a small club on the outskirts of Athens, complete with reception and a live band.  It just so happened that the wedding and reception were the exact same time as the annual Georgia/Florida football game… the “world’s largest cocktail party”.  For you who may not remember, in 1980 the Bulldogs were having a great year and went into that game undefeated, and Bulldog fans (Ron and I included) were very excited!  There was a small bar adjacent to the wedding reception room, empty with no TV… but someone managed to find a portable radio, and guys migrated back and forth to that corner of the club to follow the game as closely as we could.  As the game came down to the final moments, we crowded around the radio.  The Dawgs were behind 21-20 with 90 seconds left, but with the football on their own 8-yard line.  On a desperate third down play, Buck Belue scrambled back into his own end zone then came out to throw a pass to Lindsay Scott, and we listened as Larry Munson called the play and screamed “Run, Lindsay, Run”!  As Scott ran the length of the field and scored the winning touchdown, a roar went up in the wedding reception hall… but not for the bride and groom.  Many believe that was the greatest moment in Georgia football history, and the Bulldogs went on to beat Auburn and Georgia Tech and then defeat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to win the National Championship.  Even though I did not get to see that historic Georgia/Florida game, I will always remember where I was that day.  Some of you may remember that day too.  My niece’s marriage did not last, but “Belue to Scott” will live on forever in the hearts and minds of the Bulldog Nation.  It is hard to believe that this year is the 30th anniversary of that great game.  Here’s a link to a YouTube video for those who would like to remember the moment.

Don, GREAT football narration and memory.  You certainly can spin a yarn.  I'm sure it will shock you to know that I too was working with electricity Saturday.  Seems the folks renting our house have an electric vs gas dryer, so I had to have a 220 circuit run.  After reading all of the how-to's on line, I'd decided to hire an electrician to crawl around in the attic.  All of the county facility guys do work on the side and I know they can use the money.  One of the electricians assured me he would give me a call and set up a time to do the work.  Well, time is running out and I couldn't wait any longer so - that's what I spent my Saturday doing.  I can work with electrical wiring but don't really feel comfortable putting my hand in the circuit box and was a little concerned installing an outlet next to a gas line.  I'm sure you have crawled around in an attic.  It was a lot more fun when I was younger.  I had to climb over the furnace and pull that heavy wire almost the entire length of the house.  As I most often do, I spend a lot of time trying to make something work and then the simple solution smacks me in the face.  After several failed attempts to drill through the top plate, I pushed the cord down the hole next to the gas line.  The 220 volt outlet hook-up was pretty straight forward.  Then, time to wire the breaker.  Trip the main breaker - oh, yeah all the lights go off and the panel is in a closet.  At least holding a flashlight with one hand will keep you from putting both in the panel at the same time.  A safety measure I read.  Breaker wired, seated, knockout removed, panel cover in place and ...... throw the switch!!!!  No smoke, no fire, no sparks - must have worked.  It took at least twice as long as it should have, but having never ventured that far into electricity before, I wanted to err on the side of caution.  Next big job is to dispose of a washer, gas dryer and refrigerator - this week!  If anyone out there knows of someone looking for a good deal, send them my way.  Not much going on today.  Seems most of Athens is still recovering from the celebrating.  I would assume that's why we haven't heard from Jim today.  Can't wait to see him on Funnies Wedding Videos!!!!  Later.

Diane Harris (Moore)

I've scanned the updates can tell that congrats are in order for a certain father of the bride. Wish we could see pictures.

Sounds like everyone has been busy making calls about the get together at Connie's. I predict a good turnout. Would give anything to get there, but I just don't see it happening this time. Boo Hoo!

I flew to CO last Tues. and my daughter-in-law's mom passed away before dawn on Wed. Annie had  been there several days already. Early Thursday I flew with Chuck and the three children to Binghamton, NY. Dick drove up Friday night from Philly where he had been working all week. The funeral was Saturday. I drove back to Philadelphia with Dick Sunday, and that's where I am now. We will fly home together late Fri. night. I am worn out, but will try and enjoy Philly. We are on the outskirts and I'll take the train into the city a couple of days and site see. Today I drove out to Longwood Gardens, and will go to Winterthur one day also. We'll see. It was good to see my little grandchildren, and I was very glad to be helpful, but it was one crazy trip. After seeing how hard it is to fly with 3 little children I told Chuck I am amazed that they ever come to visit us. It is grueling, not to mention expensive.

If I don't check in again before Sunday, y'all have a grand time. Again, as a plea to all those who live near by, please try and attend if health will allow it. Connie is so nice to host, and we are so fortunate to have had a class as special as ours.

Love to all.

Gary Grice

Happy Rainy, Rainy Night in Georgia!  Hardly enough here to settle the dust but I guess we will take what we can get.  Cool cloudy days make it even harder to get anything done.  Kathy, I doing okay.  I hope your surgery will go well and your recovery will be speedy.  We will miss you this weekend.  I trust everyone is having a BLESSED week and is getting as excited as I am about seeing some old friends this weekend.  I'm always seeking some wisdom to share and I happened upon a story of a golf hazard that I hope Jim hasn't encountered, but if he did - I hope he had $20. Have a GREAT day out there!  Later.

********************

A little old lady was walking down the street dragging two large  plastic garbage bags behind her.  One of the bags was ripped and every once in a while a $20 bill  fell out onto the sidewalk.  Noticing this, a policeman stopped her, and said, “Ma’am, there are $20 bills falling out of that bag.”

“Oh really? Darn it!” said the little old lady. “I’d better go back  and see if I can find them. Thanks for telling me officer.”

Well, now, not so fast,” said the cop. Where did you get all that  money? You didn’t steal it, did you?”

“Oh, no, no”, said the old lady.  “You see, my back yard is right  next to the Golf course. A lot of golfers come and pee through a knot hole in the fence, right into my flower garden. It used to really tick me off.  Kills the flowers, you know. Then I thought, ‘why not make the best of  it?’   So, now, I stand behind the fence by the knot hole, real quiet, with my  hedge clippers.  Every time some guy sticks his thing through my fence, I surprise him, grab hold of it and say, O.K., buddy! Give me $20,  or off it comes.”

“Well, that seems only fair,” said the cop, laughing. “OK. Good  luck! Oh, by the way, what’s in the other bag?”

”Well, you know”, said the little old lady, “not everybody pays.”

Hi to everyone from Bobby Sparks in Alabama.

I wanted let you know I probably won't be able to attend Sunday. Connie, Ive not ruled it out completely, and I'm sorry I can't be more definitive. Just taking one day at a time. I would love to see everyone. Thanks for including me.        On another subject, I realize eveyone is tired of politics about now, but my cousin is running for Governor of Alabama. Hello Bobby!  Good to hear from you!  We all hope you will be able to make it this weekend but if you can't we all understand.  I missed the last get together myself.  I just got a call from David Landers and he will not be able to make it this weekend.  I wish your cousin good luck in the Governor's race.  I was in Montgomery for three years and one day unwittingly ended up entertaining ex-Governor Patterson.  Kind of a long story - maybe I'll bore everyone with that story some day.  A friend of mine may still be knocking around Alabama politics.  His name is George Hargrove.  I served with him in the Navy on three separate occasions.  Don't know how he got so luck!  His plan when he retired was to return to Alabama and work in Emergency Management.  That was about 17 years ago.  Like so many others, I lost track of him over the years.  Don't let the Class of '68 loose track of you.  Keep in touch and post on here occasionally.  Everyone would love to hear how you are doing.  Nothing but friends here.

I've been exchanging emails with Sandra Brown (Willis) about the Class of '70 setting up a website.  They are holding their 40th Reunion this weekend.  I hope they have half as much fun as we did!!!

Its a beautiful fall day here in the Classic City - too nice to be cooped up inside!  Guess I had better play like I'm working before  they take a notion to fire me.  Hope everyone is having a BLESSED week!  Later.

Bobby, so nice to hear from you.  We would be very glad to see you if you can make it on Sunday.  Just a very casual, sit around talking afternoon...

I am sure looking forward to seeing those of you that can come.  Looks like it will be a pretty Fall day.   We will miss all the folks that can't make it.            I'm a little concerned about Jim Willis - haven't heard a word since the wedding.   Did you survive all the activities??

Don, I know Liz is having back problems.  Sure hope you will get to come.

Diane, I hope you and Dick have a restful week-end!  We will miss seeing you and Kathy and others that won't be able to come.

Everyone have a nice week-end!

Morning Guys!

Sorry I've not been on sooner but I slipped a disc in my lower back

last weekend. You can bet this week hasn't been fun! And no it

wasn't from dancing to much! I did it playing golf! At any rate the

wedding was GREAT! We had between 100 and 150 people there.

Everyone had plenty to eat/drink and the band was a group of

guys from a little community called Deep Step, Ga. which is a little

hole in the wall place about 10 miles southeast of Milledgeville.

They were Great! played oldies/country and some pop! Anyway Karen

and Kristen had a group of nurses that came and they let it go!

I know that the next time i go to the hospital---I'll take a bottle

are two of good wine---and let the good times roll! I didn't know

the human body could make some of those moves!!!  We rocked

til one in the morning! So--- yes we did have a good time.

Connie--- I need to beg your forgiveness for Sunday. My doctor

says I need to keep a cold pack on this back and stay off my

feet this weekend. I'm really sorry--- I was still thinking I could be

there! But this thing has got me to the point where I can hardly

stand. The doctor gave me an adjustment all of the last four

days. Its better but just barely. Sorry, and I'll be thinking about

you guys. As soon as Karen gets the pics. from the photographer

I'll post them.

Anyway--- have a great weekend mates! And lets not forget---

GO YOU JUNKYARD DAWGS!

I had a wonderful time visiting with my "old" friends!!!    We missed those that didn't come, but sure had fun talking and laughing (and eating!) on this beautiful afternoon.
Here's who was here:  Tommy Adkins and Paula; Beverly Burgess and Donnie; Sheryl Burgess and Lamar; Joy Callaway; Ross Dudley; Janie Etheredge and Charles; Gail Gabriel; Gary Grice and Sherron; Dennis Helmreich; Charles McGarity and Elaine; Connie Morgan; Judy Stewart and Ed; Nancy Tucker; Kay Wheless and Mike; Ray Wheless; Linda Wheless and Carl; Kathy Wheless and Danny.        (Someone remind me if I've left anyone off)

When I came in tonight, there was a message on the phone from PeeWee sending her love and regrets that she couldn't make it.  Diane Harris called Friday and sent hellos and love from she and Dick.

Just special people with great spouses.   I was blessed to have gone to school with you and "grow-up" with you, and I have been so blessed that we renewed friendships and continue to share memories and make new ones.
God bless you all.
