Hello Mates!

Gary, that pitcher hitting thing is kinda like Dick's fire in the fireplace

trick last nite. It's a matter of timing!!! Dick was right on. But pitchers

do not get enough practice to get good! Right Dick? I can't believe you

didn't recognize that move! Keep lighting them fires boys!

Donald Chandler

I agree with my friend Jim... it's a "timing" thing.   I've heard it said that good hittting is all about good timing and good pitching is disrupting that timing by changing pitching speed, location, and ball movement.  Major leaguers are constantly adjusting, and that timing thing takes lots of experience and practice, practice, practice.  As Jim said, major league pitchers just don't practice their hitting as much since they concentrate on their pitching skills and studying the opposing hitters.  There are always exceptions to the rule and some pitchers are good hitters too.  Usually they are just good athletes anyway, or they were hitters in a previous life.  The Braves have had some good hitting pitchers on the roster... Smoltz/Glavine/Maddux could get you a hit now and then, and all were good bunters.  Now, Gary... I can certainly understand your frustration with last night's game.  The Braves loaded the bases in both the first and second innings and DID NOT SCORE.  It's enough to make a good man cuss.  But they did win the game and that's what counts the most.  But let's not talk about the BRAVES... right Jim?  By the way, I have a very fertile imagination, and one of my fantasies (and I do have many that do not involve a baseball)  is to stand at the plate and try to hit a major league pitcher.  I would love to see what a 98 mph fastball really looks like up close and personal, or a wicked major league curve ball.  That's one of the things yet unfulfilled on my Bucket List.  And speaking of that, I see in the news that the world comes to an end this Saturday, so I guess I should get crackin' on that Bucket List.

Ok Don, you got up my curiosity 'cause I hadn't seen that story.  For anyone, like me, who was also uninformed, here's the link:   Flash! The World is coming to an end!  Pretty interesting.  Later.

Greetings and Salutations one and all.  Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood so I don't know why I began thinking about mistakes other than a couple of lead news stories.  You know, I once thought I made a mistake but I was wrong.  Have you seen the picture of the woman with whom Arnold fathered a child?  What a mistake!!!  A REAL two bagger.  Somebody must have been REALLY drunk.  And then it appears that the woman the IMF Chief is accused of raping may have AIDS.  Oops!  A REAL mistake - on many levels.  And that is my seque into today's bit of information - 10 Accidental Discoveries.  Quite interesting.  I hope everyone is having a very blessed week.  Later.

Donald Chandler

Two bagger?

Well, guys... where are the ladies?... Have they abandoned us?... Maybe we ran them off the forum.  Since I can't seem to stir up very much give and take with the End of the World, Osama Bin Laden, Will & Kate, Jury Duty, Mothers, Movies, Horse Racing, the Atlanta Braves, Bucket Lists, etc., I will share a joke with you and hope it does not offend anyone.  I assure you all that I am no competition for our Chief Offender and Resident Funny Man, Gary... but here goes...

A guy walks into a New York City bar with his dog.  The guy orders a drink and his dog jumps up on the bar.  The nearby patrons want to know what's goin' on, and the dog's owner proclaims that his dog can talk.  The unbelieving crowd asks him to prove it.  The guy asks his dog, "What do you call that thing up on top of a house?", and the dog promptly replies, "Rooff, Rooff!"  The patrons were not impressed and tell the guy that he has to do better than that.  "OK," says the guy, who turns to his dog and asks, "Who was the greatest New York Yankee baseball player of all time?"  The dog thinks for a moment and then says, "Ruuth, Ruuth!"  At this point, the tough bar crowd had enough and proceeded to beat the guy to a pulp and threw him out the door with his "talking" dog.  Bloody and broken, the guy lay flat on his back in the parking lot.  His faithful dog came over, licked his face and asked him, "Do you think I should have said 'Mickey Mantle'?"

Diane Harris (Moore)

HA, Gary, you thought your comment about the "romantic fire" Dick and I had the other night would flush me out, didn't you? Well, it almost did, but before I could write I had to go and tend to an urgent matter. (Can't remember what) It has warmed up today into the low 60s, but we have had cold, wet weather. Hate to even complain, with all the sadness that others are going through in MS, as well as places struck by the tornado, yet I do.

Hope all are well. Jimmy, and Don, I know you love to talk about the Braves, and you will never bore me by doing so. It makes me feel like I am home. By the way, Don, the joke was funny, and very G rated. That is, unless I missed something, which is possible.

Dick and are are going to Rockford, IL tomorrow to visit our baby boy, Greg, and our daughter-in-law, Christy for the weekend. We look very forward to seeing them. They have moved from Chicago to Rockford, and this will only be our second trip there. Be sure and check facebook next week, 'cause I hope to have some pictures up. What will we do in Rockford? Don't know, but I do know it is the birthplace of the Sock Monkey, so it's obviously a cultural mecca.

Y'all have a good weekend. It is supposed to stop raining here for the weekend and be pretty. Of course where we are going rain is predicted, so moisture is apparently following us where ever we go.

There. One female has reported in. I pass the torch on to my feminine counterparts.

05/20/11 08:23 AM #2265

Gary Grice

Greetings and salutations one and all - and HAPPY FRIDAY!  Diane and Dick, I hope you have a wonderful trip and find something to do in Rockford.  I don't know why your mention of an unknown town and the sock doll brought back a memory but since not much is going on around here, I'll bore anyone that wants to read about my memory.  YEARS ago, when we would come home we would try to find a special place to stop or visit so the kids would feel like they had been on a vacation.  We were in Virginia Beach and planned a trip home with a few days lay over at Sherron's Aunt's house in Lawrenceville.  Then we saw one of those travel spots on the news about Mentone, Alabama - home of the Gordy Doll.  It was just a couple of hours from her house so that became a day trip for us.  Anyone who has hear of Mentone, please raise your hand!  For the rest of you, it wasn't much more than an intersection with a bump in the road when we were there - BUT it had been THE PLACE way back when.  There was one craft shop in the lower level of what had been a magnificent hotel, two small eateries, several antique shops and of course, The Gordy Store.  Gordy's were dolls made from gords.  ALABAMA, the music group lived not far away and their annual festival brought some life to the small community.  They were quick to tell you of their dreams to revitalize their little town to its former glory. I'll have to find my way back there someday but in the meantime, this slideshow will have to surffice.  So here is - Mentone, Alabama - today.

Don, that was a good one!  Since Diane is going to be away for a few days, I guess we can cut loose with some R and X rated jokes!  I'll have to find a REALLY good one to post in her honor.

Seems PBO has created quite a stir in promising "peace and safety" for the middle east - that and a prediction that the beginning of the end starts tomorrow.  Check out 1 Thes 5:3.  I hope you ALL have a very blessed day and weekend (even if the end is near).  Later.

05/20/11 09:16 PM #2266

Connie Morgan (White)

O.K. guys, no "R or X" rated....  :)    Diane may be away for a day or so, but I read this forum every day.    I have very much enjoyed all of your posts!!!   Don, your mom was a beautiful lady.

After work today I rode by the high school on the way to Bells, and there were lots of kids out in front in their blue caps and gowns.   Took me back 43 years!!!    I have a picture with some of my friends in front of the school on our graduation day.    The girls caps and gowns were white back then.   What color were the boy's?

For those of you on Facebook, I am "friends" of a site "Growing up in Athens".   They often post old pictures from around Athens.   Tonight I was looking of one of some bands.   There was a band named The Jades, and I am sure Tommy Adkins and Larry Chastain were in one of the pictures.  One of the guys looks sorta like Benny Allen.   Check it out.

Diane, I know you and Dick will enjoy your visit with Greg and Christy.  Safe travels!

Jim, please cash the check I sent you.   You are messing up my checking account.  :)

Late happy birthday wishes to Jane.   I sure hope it was a special day.

Gary, thoughts and prayers have been with you and Sherron as you cared for your friend.  I know she was dear to you, and that y'all were such a blessing in her life.

You know, as I typed "43 years" a minute ago, it dawned on me that we need to start thinking about our 45th. reunion.  Maybe when we have a "get-together" again, we can start throwing out some ideas.

I do love hearing from those of you who write, and would sure like to hear from some others as you might have time.   Please occasionally check in.

Have a great week-end, and I love y'all.

Good Morning Mates!

Connie, I don't remember receiving a check. I'll go back and recheck

my files, sorry! I know how agitated I get when someone holds a

check and not  cash it.  I'm really sorry, I'll look today I promise

and let you know! By the way my sister Ann Clark is having by-pass

surgery Monday morning. She's in Athens Regional isn't that where

you are? If so maybe I'll see you next week when I'm up.

Anyway, it's wild here also. The Putnam Co. High School had their

ceremony last nite. And nothing has changed in the last 43 years.

All's still the same, a crazy time was had by all! And you know? No

way does it seem like 43 years for us! Guess I truly am getting old!

But we truly have been blessed!!! And I wouldn't have missed it

for the World! Thanks to all you guys!

Good Morning Mates,

Ross no words can comfort at a time like this. But just know that

Mr Dudley was a good man and that there is comfort in knowing

he can now rest. We will all miss him. I am truly blessed in having

had him as a part of my life. I thank the Master for allowing him

to have passed my way.

Another Hero has passed friends.  May Heaven's gates herald his

Ross, I'm so sorry about the passing of your dad. I extend my sympathy to you & Pam. I have seen him several times at the Carter reunions after he and Carolyn married. My sympathy for her also. I saw Carolyn at Aunt Evelyn's (Glenn Nix's mama)funeral a couple week ago. Carolyn & I are first cousins also. My dad has been gone a very long time, but I still miss him. I'm looking forward to be reunited one day with my loved ones who have gone on.

Hope all of you guys out there are staying well.

Ross and Pam, we are so sorry to hear about your daddy. Our love goes out to you, and to all the family.

Jim, how is your sister?

Jimmy Willis

Good Morning Mates,

I thank you guys for the well wishes for my sister Ann. She when

thru 9 hours of open heart surgery yesterday.  She had three bi-passes

of which two of these did not take. Which made them have to go

back in and redo those. That's the reason for the nine hours of surgery.

Anyway, she is in the Intensive Care Ward. And we hope she will continue

to recover.

If any of you guys get the info on Mr Dudley please post it.

I would appreciate it.

Jim, here is the info on Ross's dad.  I went to the funeral home last evening and saw Ross and Pam.  They both appeared to be doing well.  Jim, I pray your sister will do well in recovery and the doctors will have wisdom in assisting the healing process.  I hope everyone else is having a good week.  Later.

While Diane is out of town, I figured I should take advantage of the situation and post a risque Traveling Salesman joke.  (Don't tell her!)  Later.

A traveling salesman’s car breaks down in the country, so he decides to call on the closest farmhouse.

When the farmer opens the door, the salesman says, “Sir, my car died just up the road. Could I stay here for tonight?”

The farmer says, “Sure, but I have a very handsome son and you’ll have to promise not to sleep with him.”

“Excuse me,” says the salesman, “but I think I’m in the wrong joke.”

05/25/11 09:46 AM #2278

Diane Harris (Moore)

Gary, you are very good at nudging me to respond. Connie, thanks for encouraging him to keep the jokes family friendly. : ) That was a funny one you just posted, Gary! I don't know where you find them, but they typically make me laugh.

All's well here. I'm about to head out the door and shan't return until tonight. Just usual Wed. stuff. We had a good time in Rockford, Il, visiting Greg and Christy. It's a 430 mile drive, and it was a pretty quick trip, but when it comes to seeing our kids we'll do just about anything. If anyone had ever, ever told me I would have someone I love SO much living so far up north in IL, or so far out west in Colorado, I'd never have believed it. I blame our moving about with the Air Force. However, we got great daughters-in-law who I wouldn't trade for anyone. Even though the boys have lived only 3 years in GA from '84-87, they love their family there, and also love GA. They are both big Bulldog fans, even though they didn't attend there. I have promised myself that I will leave behind written history of their Georgia roots, not just for them, but for our grandkids and their future kids. They love to get back as often as they can.

Oh, well, I'm working myself up into a sentimental fit, so I'd better slap myself, get on the road and tend to business.

Jim, sounds like your sister really had a time with her bypasses. I sure hope she recovers fully, and soon.

Love and sympathy to the Dudley family. Ross and Pam, we love y'all.

Stay safe. Weather is so crazy these days that I sure keep attuned to the forecasts. Poor, poor Joplin, as well as the other places that have been blasted.

HAPPY HUMP DAY, MATES...

Jim... I pray that your sister is making progress from her by-pass surgery.  Please keep us posted.

I'm happy to see that the ladies on our Forum are giving us guys another chance.  It's good to see posts from Connie, Diane, and Kathy.

Liz is making steady progress from her knee surgery and is driving again, so I lost my job as her chauffeur.  We did get out Sunday morning for church and Sunday afternoon for our Sunday School Class Annual Picnic.

I guess the world did not come to an end Saturday... if it did I wasn't invited.  I've heard reports that Mr. Camping, the dude who started the "Judgement Day" prophecy (he also made a false prediction in 1994) is now saying he miscalculated by five months, so the Rapture is now re-scheduled for October 21st.  For those not familiar with what the BIBLE says on the matter, it is pretty clear... Matthew 24:36 reads, "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the Angels in Heaven, nor the Son, but ONLY the Father."  Thousands of people quit their jobs and emptied their bank accounts to follow Mr. Camping who thinks he is privileged to know something that even Jesus Christ does not know.

Today's POP CULTURE Report...  I don't watch "Oprah", but I understand that today is her last show... so maybe the world as we know it really is coming to an end.  And I don't watch "Dancing with the Stars" either, but I understand that former Georgia Bulldog, Hines Ward is the winner.  I guess we can look for a new "endzone dance" from Hines this Fall... if there is an NFL season.  However, I must admit, I do watch "American Idol" (I plead guilty) .  We got hooked a few years back when there was a contestant on there that we knew.  Liz loves the show, and a good ole GEORGIA country girl, Lauren Alaina is one of the final two contestants remaining, along with a good ole country boy from North Carolina.  The winner to be crowned tonight.

Enjoy the rest of your week, mates.

Greetings and salutations one and all.  Diane, so happy you and Dick had a nice visit with your son and daughter.  Sherron and I are off to Hickory, NC for our grand daughter's pre-school graduation tomorrow evening - so you will escape my humor (or lack thereof) for a few days.  There is just SOOOO much in the news today, I don't know where to start.  As the result of one story, and being unsuccessful at losing any weight, my new goal is to pack on about 300 lbs so I can get on the "Biggest Loser".  Seems Anna Kournikova is replacing Jillian Michaels as the "coach".  Either one is pretty hot but Anna is SUPER HOT!  And then PBO doesn't seem to know what year it is.  After laying a wreath on the Grave of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey, he signed the guest book:

It is a great privilege to commemorate our common heritage, and common sacrifice.

Barack Obama

24 May 2008

President Obama Has No Idea What Year It Is

??????  Now I have gotten confused on which year it is, but usually I have it figured out by March.  During his trip to the British Isles he was comparing himself to President Reagan.  Maybe he was talking about a little pre-alzheimers.

Well now that I know Diane does enjoy a risque joke as much as the rest of us, this one is just for her.  I hope everyone has a GREAT rest of the week and a very BLESSED weekend.  Later.

It was three o'clock in the morning, and the receptionist at a posh hotel was just dozing off, when a little old lady comes running towards her screaming. "Please come quickly!" she yelled, "I just saw a naked man outside my window!"

The receptionist immediately rushes up to the old lady's room. "Where is he?" asked the receptionist.

"He's over there," replied the little old lady, pointing to an apartment building opposite the hotel.

The receptionist looks over and could see a man with no shirt on, moving around his apartment. "It's probably a man who's getting ready to go to bed," she said reassuringly. "And how do you know he's naked, you can only see him from the waist up?"

"The dresser, honey!" screamed the old lady. "Try standing on the dresser!"

Now Gary... It's tough to remember hard stuff like what year it is.  And I can understand why Obama was confused... HE DIDN'T HAVE A TELEPROMPTER!

I am off today and doing some cooking and cleaning, and have the "oldies" music going.  Just heard "Angel Baby" which always makes me think of Pee Wee and prompted me to come sit down and write.

I hope you all have a happy, safe and blessed Memorial Day week-end.

We are blessed to be in this country  (even tho we seem to be destroying so much that it was based on)...    I so thank all the men women and their families that have given so much for the USA!   Several in our class served in the military---my heartfelt thanks to you.

Diane, I saw some pictures of y'alls car after the hail storm - WOW!   Glad you weren't hurt.  Also glad your trip to visit with Greg and Christy was good.  Wish you cold round up your boys and their families and get Dick to move you all back here to Georgia!

I recently heard that Teresa Burt Colwell was in auto accident a few weeks ago, but thankfully wasn't hurt.

Jim, how is your sister doing?

Gary, have a good trip to N.C.

I saw Ross and Pam at the funeral home this week.   They seem to be doing well.

Don, I am glad that Liz has about recovered!   Just in time to enjoy the summer.

Kathy, I share your sentiments about still missing parents, no matter how long ago they died!  It left a hole in my heart that has never healed.

Sure would like to hear from y'all.

GOD BLESS AMERICA ---- and may America turn back to God!

love you friends,

connie

Good Day, Mates.

It is great to see a report from our Crawford Correspondent... Connie.

If Liz can handle the trip, we may drive over to Oglethorpe County on Monday to visit my sister Marian and celebrate my niece Crissy's birthday (May 31).

Hope all of you are safe and sound from all the nasty storms around the country. We had a thunderstorm last night with 1.5" of rain.

On this holiday weekend, I salute all the men and women who have paid the ultimate price for this country and given their lives in defense of freedom.  MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA!  Have a Safe and Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone.

Blessings from your Marietta Correspondent... Don.
