Sammy: Thanks. Sounds like you have a great trip planned. I didn't like to travel much when I was younger, but love it now. Have a great time! Check in here while you are on the road :) Will check out your son on YouTube!
Cissy: Thanks! Did you try to post a picture of your miata? I think something else got posted. Would love to see a picture of it. Cool name for it!
Debbie: Thanks! Got a question: were you in orchestra or band? I seem to remember that but wasn't sure (violin or chello?). Yeah I love those random trips too, and you're right, you gotta fit the golf bags in! On that last trip I became a big Holiday Inn Express fan ha ha.
One last thing about the car. When I bought it, a dear friend said "that's so pretty you should name it after someone beautiful". Since Natalie Wood was the "it girl" when I was in college, that seemed the natural fit (hence the license plate). I get a lot of horn honks from that plate (especially down in So Cal), and people often share how much they admired her.
One evening I was coming out of the napa Trader Joe's and there was a guy staring at the plate. He moved off before he saw me coming, and then walked back to me when he saw me walk up to the car. He asked me if I knew her, and I replied "no". He then said "well I was her brother in law" He looked again at the plate and said "how did you know that was her nickname? Only the family and close friends called her Nat" (I didn't know this, it was just the only combination of letters I could think of to fit on the plate). We talked awhile and he told me that she was from Santa Rosa and was discovered there. He also told me about the family's efforts to get the investigation into her death reopened.
Not more than two weeks later I was at the Shell station on Trancas, and the guy filling up next to me told me that, at a very young age, he was a "page" at the academy awards and got to escort her up to the stage when she was just a young actress.
Prior to these encounters I'd thought about changing the plate, but now I think I'll leave it just the way it is, just to see who else pops up. Besides, I like keeping her name out there, I'm astonished by how many young people know who she is (except for the young parking valet, at Harrahs, who kept paging "Mr. Nate Wood". :0
