Dave: Yikes bah ha ha!

I see you are appreciative of the T-Shirt art form.  Don't mind Bruce (too many hits from the volleyball, has made him surly).

New topic. I'm never trying to start any trouble, but does this bring anybody to mind? Your thoughts (leave me out of the conversation).

Sad news today!  Nadja Hogberg Fechter passed away today after a brave battle with cancer.  My best wishes go out to her husband Mel and her two daughters.  Go in peace Nadja, and Go Giants!

I first got to know Nadja Hogberg @ Shearer school in the 4th or 5th grade.  She was instantly memorable with her unique name & (natural) hair color.  Who knew she'd grow up to be the biggest Giants fan in the area?  My heart goes out to her husband Mel, her family and friends, not the least of which, Jim Jones, is dealing with two other very recent losses of loved ones.  It's a sad time for our group.  My thoughts are with you all.

I am sorry to hear about Nadja.  Her dad used take me to school when he drove her. The lived a few doors down the street.  The family that I remember was kind and giving.  I do remember that her dad would warm the car up for at least 15 minutes before taking off.  Everyone thought that it would make the engine last longer when the engine block was warm.  Didn't matter, gas was only 25 cents a gallon then.  I did not keep in touch with Nadja but have good memories.  My condolences to her family,

So sorry to hear about Nadja.  She was always so cheerful.  I'll never forget that bright smile lighting up her face, and her bouncy, beautiful red hair.  My heart goes out to her family.  On a happier note, thanks, Stevie, for the birthday wishes.  Hope all is well!

My fond rememberances of Nadja are highlighted by her firey henna hair and equally spirited presence.

When we met again at the reunion, Ellwin Jobe remined her of the Senior Baccalaureate dinner we had at the  Fairmont Hotel's Tiki Room. I was Nadja's date.

Naturally she denied it at first, but Ellwin had photographic proof.

Her grace under fire was admirable; she said she was sure she had a good time.

But as I reflected back to our faux adult evening together in 1964,  I wondered: Did she ask me to be her date or did she tell me?

Gotta love her.

Attended the memorial for Mary Ellen Boyet a few weeks ago.  So sad about her passing, she and her husband George had such an impact on my life.  I didn't take french at the high school, so I never knew her as a teacher. I met her thru George during my involvement in the Eugene McCarthy for President campaign in 1968.

George and Mary Ellen were the first honest-to-god intellectuals, world travelers etc, I'd met in Napa, and I was so impressed with their knowledge of politics, and world events. There were also very dear people. When you were with them it was like you were the most important person in the world to them.

My life, and politics took a total u-turn when I met them, and a year later I volunteered for a 3 year stretch in VISTA (volunteers in service to America/the domestic peace corp), serving in the black community of Omaha's near north side, and later with Napa County Legal Assistance. I was a tennis bum prior to that, such was their influence. ;)

I'll never forget them.

Mary Ellen and I at the opening of the McCarthy for President Headquarters. Couldn't find a way to make this picture smaller! ha ha

Hi Larry, et al.....your description of Mary Ellen was exactly as I would have put it.  I did take her French classes

She was a breath of fresh air, intelligent and worldly.  I loved watching she and Mr Boyet find each other.

Dolores Fischer, the Boyets, Donald Mixon and Howard Erricson all had a way of pushing me out of a comfort

Zone, which, once out of, I never went back.  Mary Ellen must have been a very good teacher as well because

At first I was lost in her Beginning French, but I have studied that language all my life.  I just found her so fascinating and such an interesting person.  Just lovely.

I had the fortune to have Mrs. Boyet as s teacher for 2 years of French, both as Ms. Floria and Mrs. Boyet.  I found her very nice and caring.  Rest in peace.

Larry, thank you & everyone else for your tributes to the Boyets.  They were a very special part of my early life as George & Mary Ellen were very dear, close friends of my parents.  While politics was a very important part of their lives, it wasn't the most important -- most important to them were people; that's what helped make them such exceptional educators and so dearly remembered by all.  I miss them.

Mary, Vicki, and Bruce:

So glad you commented, and I totally agree.  Those were my experiences with them as well.  I remember that I had a discussion with George, just after they returned from spending the summer in France.  I never saw him so happy.  He commented to me "you know it's an amazing thing to fall in love with your wife all over again".

That was the Boyets.

I noticed last night, that in the section of this website titled "A walk down memory lane" there are a couple of postings of our school newspaper, from our junior year.  One of them had Mary Ellen as the featured teacher still listed under he maiden name.  Check it out.
