NVHS/Delbrook Class 1958 Zoom – May 5, 2025
The first on the zoom call, Evelyn (Bengough) Sarginson, lives in Chingford, England, near London. She has traveled a great deal and mentioned her brother, Charles, whom some of our class may recall. Liz (Spouse) Lee who lives with her husband, Martin, in Ottawa was next. Liz told us about a couple of programs on B.C. that she had enjoyed watching. One, on Youtube, “Destination Adventure” shows the province nicely. The other is about a couple, Matt and Emilie, who have been winter caretakers on the remote coast of Haida Gwaii where they have filmed wild life including the spawning of Herons. In addition, she has enjoyed reading mysteries by the writer, Wishaw, that focus on the 40s around Nelson, B.C.
Marion (Humphreys) Marsden told us she has recently seen her first great grand-daughter. She continues to do quilting which she gives to Royal Columbian Hospital’s pediatric unit. She showed us the most recent quilt she had finished which is a very lovely piece.
Dave and Joan McKay who live in Victoria showed us around their garden which is full of flowering plants and at its very best. The apple tree is yet to bloom. Joan mentioned that they gave up downhill skiing at the time of Covid, but they keep up with walking these days. Their grandson, a very accomplished swimmer, now instructs in that sport among many other activities.
Bill Huxham and wife Vicky joined in and, like John Bartok, talked about fishing. John said the fishing this year, especially for anchovies and Coho Salmon has been exceptional. Bill celebrated his birthday on April 30th with 27 family members gathered at his place on the island. His son who lives in Chase had had a hand in organizing the occasion. He also mentioned that they live in a trailer on the family property which is being managed by another son who has taken over the main house. Gardening is late this year and Bill has had to do a second planting of the squash he particularly loves. His comment about needing a medical check for maintaining his driver’s license sparked a lively conversation from all. Bill said they live in a rural setting and driving is essential.
Rob Hohert is currently on his yacht in the Atlantic Ocean (near Brunswick, Georgia) and thinks he may sell the vessel after this voyage. We could see him swaying with the ocean….He said that "Owning a boat means Break Out Another Thousand".
While Bill Wedley was at his usual desk, Sheila in Bill’s dining room hosting the meeting on her laptop. There was an electrical outage for repairs at Sheila’s apartment, so Bill invited her to convene the meeting from his place. During the session, Sheila took her laptop outside and showed a panorama view that included Central Lonsdale, West Van, the Lions and Grouse Mountain.
Bill Wedley spoke about Bob Dempsey when Evelyn asked. Apparently, Bob is living in Edmonton now close to his eldest son. Bill plans to take a summer holiday to the interior and Alberta, so he may be able to see him.
Bill also asked Liz about the art that was visible on the wall behind her. She delighted in describing each piece --- all from BC artists and acquired through the years. There was also a piece from a relative that prompted her to tell us that her family had owned a fish processing business in BC which included smoking fish.
The McKay’s told us about the excitement of the recent Winnipeg Jets game against the St Louis Blues wherein the Jets won by scoring 3 goals in the last 3 minutes to win the game. That discussion led to one about the Whitecaps Soccer and their success against Messi’s team and the league in general.
Bill Wedley took a group photo which he will post. Another time, we may try to record the zoom chat which is always a pleasure to be involved with.
